When Do You Need Rack Safety Netting?

Any time the back of your pallet rack faces a pedestrian area, work station, office wall, or secondary aisle — products can be pushed off the back during loading. Safety netting catches falling items before they hit people or property.

🛡️ Back-of-Rack Protection

When forklifts push pallets onto beams, items at the back can be pushed off the other side. If that back side faces a walkway, office, or pick aisle, falling products create a serious injury risk. Netting catches anything that goes over the back edge.

👷 Cross-Aisle Protection

In back-to-back rack configurations with pick aisles between them, netting between the rows prevents items from falling from one side into the pick aisle on the other. Essential for fulfillment centers with hand-pick operations adjacent to forklift aisles.

🏢 Wall-Adjacent Protection

Rack installed against building walls can have products pushed off the back into the wall — damaging walls, fire systems, electrical panels, and plumbing. Netting prevents product contact with wall-mounted building systems.

📋 OSHA Compliance

OSHA’s General Duty Clause requires employers to protect workers from recognized hazards. Falling objects from elevated rack are a recognized hazard. Safety netting demonstrates proactive hazard mitigation — a defensible position during OSHA inspections.

Netting Types & Options

Different types of rack safety netting
Type Material Best For
Polypropylene Netting UV-resistant woven polypropylene Standard indoor warehouse use — most common
Heavy-Duty Nylon Knotted or knotless nylon net Heavy loads, high-impact environments
Wire Mesh Panels Welded steel wire panels Permanent installations, very heavy items
Strap-Style Barriers Horizontal nylon straps with buckle hardware Light-duty, easy-access areas

Colors: High-visibility orange and yellow are most common — they clearly mark protected zones. Black and gray options available for less conspicuous installations.

Mounting: Netting attaches to rack frames with clips, hooks, or bolt-on brackets. Most installations complete in a few hours per aisle. No rack modification required.

Rack Netting FAQ

Is rack safety netting required by OSHA?

OSHA doesn’t specifically mandate netting, but the General Duty Clause requires employers to address recognized hazards. Falling objects from rack are a recognized hazard. Netting is the most common and cost-effective way to address this requirement. Many building codes and fire marshals also require it.

How is rack netting installed?

Netting attaches to rack frames using clips, S-hooks, or bolt-on brackets. No cutting, welding, or rack modification required. Most aisles can be netted in a few hours. We install netting as part of new rack projects or retrofit existing systems.

What mesh size should I use?

Standard 1″ to 4″ mesh works for most applications. Smaller mesh catches smaller items but restricts more airflow and light. Larger mesh is lighter and cheaper but won’t catch small products. We match mesh size to your products.

Does netting affect forklift operations?

No. Netting is installed on the back side of rack — facing away from the forklift aisle. It doesn’t interfere with loading, unloading, or pallet placement. Operators shouldn’t even notice it during normal operations.

How much does rack netting cost?

Rack netting is one of the most affordable safety accessories. The cost per bay is minimal compared to the liability risk of a falling-object injury. Contact us for pricing based on your rack dimensions and coverage requirements.
