Locker Types & Materials

Different environments demand different locker materials. We specify the right construction for your moisture levels, durability requirements, and aesthetic expectations.

Locker Types and Materials
  • Steel Lockers — Heavy-gauge cold-rolled steel with powder-coat finish in hundreds of colors. The most economical and durable option for industrial, educational, and commercial employee locker rooms.
  • Phenolic Lockers — Solid phenolic core panels resist moisture, impact, graffiti, and bacteria. Ideal for aquatic centers, healthcare facilities, and high-humidity environments where steel would corrode.
  • HDPE Plastic Lockers — High-density polyethylene lockers with zero-maintenance, no-rust construction. Waterproof and vandal-resistant for outdoor pool areas, water parks, and harsh environments.
  • Wood Laminate Lockers — Upscale appearance with melamine or HPL laminate finishes for corporate fitness centers, spas, and country clubs where aesthetics are as important as function.
  • Multi-Tier Configurations — Single-tier, double-tier, triple-tier, four-tier, and six-tier arrangements maximize locker count within available floor space while matching storage needs.

Locker Room Design FAQs

How much do lockers cost?+
Standard steel employee lockers cost $100–$300 per opening depending on tier configuration and size. Phenolic lockers run $300–$600 per opening. HDPE plastic lockers range from $250–$500 per opening. Premium wood-laminate lockers can exceed $500 per opening. Volume pricing applies to larger installations.
What locker material resists moisture best?+
Phenolic and HDPE plastic lockers are completely moisture-resistant and will not rust, warp, delaminate, or support mold growth. They are the best choice for pools, aquatic centers, shower areas, and any high-humidity environment.
What lock options are available?+
Options include built-in combination locks, padlock hasps, key-operated cam locks, electronic keypad locks, RFID card locks, and coin-return locks. Electronic and RFID systems offer audit trail capabilities and master override for facility management.
Are ADA-compliant lockers required?+
Yes. ADA requires a minimum number of accessible lockers with appropriate heights, handle types, and clear floor space. We include ADA-compliant locker positions in every design with proper quantities per code requirements.
How long does locker room installation take?+
Most locker room installations complete in 1–5 days depending on the number of lockers, bench installation, and anchoring requirements. Larger projects with 100+ lockers may require 5–10 days.
Can lockers be reconfigured after installation?+
Steel, phenolic, and HDPE lockers can be relocated and reconfigured. Free-standing installations simply unbolt and move. Wall-anchored installations require new anchor points at the new location.
What ventilation do lockers need?+
Locker ventilation prevents moisture and odor buildup. Standard steel lockers have perforated doors and side vents. Fire gear lockers need active ventilation systems with fans and ductwork for turnout gear drying and off-gas management.
Do you design fire station gear rooms?+
Yes. We design NFPA-compliant turnout gear storage with ventilated lockers, clean/dirty separation, decontamination areas, and gear drying systems. Proper gear storage protects firefighters from carcinogenic contamination.
