Storage and Facility Solutions for Aerospace Operations

Aerospace manufacturing, MRO and supplier operations run on traceability, cleanliness and control. A mis-located fastener, an unlabeled bin of composite pre-preg, or a tool crib that cannot show who checked out a torque wrench is a finding waiting to happen — and in a shop working to AS9100, ITAR, or a prime contractor’s supplier quality manual, that finding stops work. Whether you build structures and components, overhaul engines and avionics, or supply tier-1 assemblies to an OEM, the right storage system is part of your quality system, not just your floor plan.

Material Handling USA designs and delivers the full range of storage aerospace facilities use every day — secured tool cribs and cage systems, high-density mobile shelving for small parts and kits, cantilever rack for long tube and sheet stock, modular cleanrooms and ESD-controlled rooms for electronics and composite work, kitting stations for line-side assembly, pallet rack for bulk and consumable inventory, and mezzanines and platforms for maintenance access. Because we supply every system ourselves, we can lay out an entire stockroom, tool crib or hangar support space around your actual part flow and audit requirements instead of forcing your operation to fit one vendor’s product line.

Every project starts with a free consultation and a scaled CAD layout. We measure your space, map fastener, tooling and component locations to the access and security level each one requires, and build a plan that fits your ceiling height, aisle and fire-code requirements, and budget. Below, explore aerospace storage by system, by the compliance requirements it needs to support, by the kind of operation you run, and by real aerospace and defense projects we have completed.

The projects that go wrong are rarely a capacity problem — they are a mismatch between how a space is stored and how the shop actually works. A tool crib without a service window turns every checkout into an interruption. Composite resins and adhesives kept on open shelving next to a machining cell create a flammable-storage finding waiting to happen. A cage sized for today’s headcount with no room to add a second workstation gets torn out again in two years. We plan for the audit, the headcount growth, and the daily walk from bench to bin — not just the square footage on the drawing.

Aerospace Storage Solutions by System

Most aerospace facilities combine several of these systems across the tool crib, stockroom, production floor and hangar. Start with the one that matches your biggest audit finding or bottleneck — we will help you integrate the rest into a single layout.

Storage Built Around Aerospace Compliance

Aerospace storage is not just about capacity — it is one of the physical systems an AS9100 auditor, an ITAR compliance officer, or a prime contractor’s supplier-quality team will walk through. We design storage layouts with these published requirements in mind:

Traceability and organization. AS9100 (the aerospace quality management standard published by the International Aerospace Quality Group) requires controlled identification and traceability of parts and material. Labeled bin locations, segregated shelving for like/unlike hardware, and a documented tool-crib check-out system make that traceability visible on the floor, not just in a database.

FOD control. Foreign object debris programs common at airframe and MRO facilities call for closed, labeled storage for small hardware and swept, organized floor areas — wire mesh cage systems and bin shelving with clear labeling support a FOD-control walk-through.

Export control. The International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR, 22 CFR Parts 120–130) require that access to export-controlled technical data and defense articles be restricted to authorized U.S. persons. Lockable security cages and access-controlled tool cribs give you a physical control point that supports your export-control plan — we build the enclosure; your compliance officer sets the access policy.

ESD and cleanroom control. Static-sensitive avionics and electronics assembly areas follow ANSI/ESD S20.20 grounding and material practices, and composite layup areas often need particulate control. Modular ESD-flooring rooms and cleanrooms give you that controlled environment without renovating the whole building.

Hazmat and flammable-material storage. Composite layup shops keep resins, adhesives and cleaning solvents that fall under OSHA’s flammable and combustible liquids rule (29 CFR 1910.106) and NFPA 30 storage guidance. Dedicated cage or cabinet storage separated from ignition sources and general stock keeps these materials organized and out of the main aisle, ahead of an EHS walk-through — your safety team still determines the specific quantities, cabinet ratings and separation distances required for your facility.

We design and supply the physical storage and enclosure systems described above. We are not an AS9100 registrar, ITAR compliance consultant, or safety authority — your quality, export-control and EHS teams remain responsible for certification, access policy and regulatory compliance. Requirements referenced above come from the IAQG’s published AS9100 standard, the U.S. Department of State’s ITAR regulations, OSHA’s published flammable-liquids standard, and the ESD Association’s ANSI/ESD S20.20 standard.

Why Aerospace Operations Choose Material Handling USA

Aerospace facilities cannot afford a storage vendor that only knows one product line, or a supplier who does not understand why a tool crib needs a service window and a sign-out log. We have supplied manufacturing, defense and MRO operations for more than 25 years, and we bring every system — cage, rack, shelving, mezzanine and modular room — from one project team so your layout is planned as a whole facility, not a stack of separate quotes.

Aerospace Storage FAQ

Do you design storage to help meet AS9100 requirements?
We design and supply the physical storage, labeling structure and secured enclosures that support the traceability and organization AS9100 auditors look for — labeled bin locations, controlled tool cribs, and segregated storage for different part classes. We are not a registrar and cannot certify your quality system; that remains with your quality team and your registrar.
Can a security cage support our ITAR access-control plan?
Yes. A lockable welded wire mesh cage or tool crib gives you a defined, physically restricted area you can tie to your access-control policy. The cage is the physical control; your export-control officer still defines who is authorized and how access is logged.
What is the difference between a tool crib and a security cage?
They use the same welded wire mesh construction. A tool crib is typically sized and laid out around a service window and check-out counter for tooling and gauges; a security cage is more often a fully enclosed room around inventory, rotables or export-controlled hardware. We size and configure either around how your team actually works.
Can you build an ESD-controlled or cleanroom space inside our existing building?
Yes. Modular cleanroom and ESD-flooring rooms are built inside your existing facility without a full renovation, which is typically faster and less disruptive than a ground-up build-out for avionics, electronics or composite work.
Do you work with defense contractors and facilities with restricted access?
Yes, including projects such as payload integration support buildings and defense manufacturing storage. We coordinate delivery and installation logistics around your facility’s access and security procedures.
How long does a typical aerospace storage project take from quote to install?
It depends on scope and product lead times, but a CAD layout and quote are typically ready within a few business days of your consultation. Installation timelines vary by system — ask your project consultant for a schedule specific to your order.
Can you store composite resins and adhesives separately from general stock?
Yes. We can lay out a dedicated cage, cabinet area or separated room for flammable and combustible materials, distinct from general parts and hardware storage. Your EHS team should confirm the specific quantities and separation distances your facility’s fire code requires.
Do you handle multi-site rollouts for aerospace suppliers with several facilities?
Yes. Where a supplier standardizes tool crib, cage or shelving configurations across plants, we can quote and coordinate delivery and installation for multiple sites from the same project team.
