Machine Guarding & Safety Standards

Robot cells carry a safety layer that a lot of general manufacturing storage doesn’t: a powered arm with a defined reach envelope and a safety-rated stop system. The storage and guarding around that cell has to respect both.

  • ANSI/RIA R15.06 — the U.S. industrial robot safety standard covering guarding, safeguarding devices, and the minimum safe distance around a robot’s reach envelope.
  • OSHA 29 CFR 1910.212 — general machine guarding requirements that apply to points of operation, including robotic work cells.
  • ANSI/ESD S20.20 — the standard we build ESD workstations and static-safe storage to for controller, drive, and sensor sub-assembly.
  • ISO 10218-1/-2 — the international robot safety standard many OEM customers reference alongside or instead of R15.06 for export or multinational programs.

Planning a Robotics Production Floor

Five questions we walk through before drawing a layout:

  • How many robot cells or test stations run at once, and what reach envelope does each one need clear of storage or traffic?
  • What share of your component inventory is ESD-sensitive (controller boards, drives, encoders) versus mechanical (housings, gearboxes, fasteners)?
  • How many unique SKUs feed a single build, and how often does that build change — a high SKU count with frequent changeovers usually points to a VLM or kitting-cart system over static shelving.
  • Which assets on the floor are customer-consigned or high-value enough to need a locked, logged cage rather than open shelving?
  • Do you need a mezzanine or second level for test stations, tooling, or overflow storage to keep the ground floor clear for cells and staging?

Cleanroom & ESD Options for Precision Robotics

Some robotics builds don’t stop at ESD-safe — semiconductor handling arms, medical and surgical robotics, and optics-integration work often need a controlled particulate environment on top of static control. We build modular cleanroom walls, ceilings and filtration packages that wrap around an existing bay, so you can section off a Class 100,000 (ISO 8) or tighter assembly area without a full building addition.

A modular cleanroom pairs with the same ESD workbenches and bin shelving used on the open shop floor — the difference is the wall, ceiling and filtration package around it, not the furniture inside it. That means we can quote both in one layout: open ESD assembly for sub-components, and a sealed cleanroom cell for the steps that need it.

Typical additions: HEPA-filtered ceiling modules, pass-through windows for parts hand-off without opening the main door, and gowning anterooms sized to your shift count.

Do you design the safety guarding around our robot cells, or just supply panels?
We design and supply the physical guarding — panels, gates, interlocks-ready openings and layout — sized to the reach envelope and safe-distance numbers your safety engineer or integrator provides. We aren’t a certifying body; the risk assessment and standard-compliance sign-off stays with your safety team.
Can you build ESD-safe storage for our controller and sensor assembly line?
Yes. We build ESD workstations, grounded workbenches and static-safe bin storage to ANSI/ESD S20.20 for controller boards, drives, encoders and sensor sub-assemblies.
We have both a parts side and a finished-machine side on the same floor — can you lay out both?
