What a Parts Department Storage System Has to Do
A dealership parts department stores a mix no single shelf handles well: thousands of small, fast-moving part numbers, boxed mid-size parts in every shape, and a long tail of bulky or awkward items such as glass, bumpers, exhaust, batteries and tires. The right parts department shelving system gives each of those groups its own storage type inside one connected layout, so the counter can find any part number in seconds and every bay holds what it was designed for.
Most of the dealer parts rooms we quote are built on Equipto V-Grip shelving, with modular drawers inside the shelving for small parts, bulk rack for cartons and long parts, and a mobile aisle or second level when floor space runs out.

Quick answer
For most dealer and service parts rooms, start with steel shelving such as Equipto V-Grip for boxed parts, put small fast movers in drawers or bins inside that shelving, give bulky parts bulk rack or specialty racks, and add mobile aisle or a multi-level system only when the footprint is fixed. This page covers the equipment choice. For room flow, counter placement and bin-location workflow, see our parts room design, layout and workflow guide.
Parts Department Storage Systems Compared
Every parts room is a combination of these system types. The question is not which one to buy, but how much of the inventory belongs in each. Use the table to match your part families to storage, then read the section for each system below.
| System | Best for | Why it is used | More detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open steel shelving (V-Grip, Lyon) | Boxed and bagged OEM parts, filters, fluids in cases | Fast to reconfigure; the base of most parts rooms | V-Grip · Steel shelving |
| Closed shelving with back and end panels | Small boxed parts that fall through open sides, labeled faces | Cleaner faces; reflective white panels brighten aisles | V-Grip |
| Drawers inside shelving | Gaskets, clips, bulbs, hardware, small electrical | Most locations per square foot for small parts | Drawers |
| Modular drawer cabinets | Point-of-use and secure small parts, special tools | Up to 400 lb drawers, lockable, counter-height tops | Drawer cabinets |
| Bin shelving and shelf bins | High-count small parts with frequent quantity changes | Visible pick faces; easy to relabel | Bins · Bin shelving |
| Bulk rack and specialty racks | Glass, bumpers, hoods, exhaust, trim, cartons | Long spans and heavy decks; shaped supports | Bulk & oversize |
| Mobile aisle (high-density) | Slow movers, tires, reserve stock, obsolete holds | Removes fixed aisles to recover floor space | High-density |
| Multi-level shelving and mezzanine | Second-level parts storage when the room is full | Uses overhead space without a new building | Multi-level |
| Vertical carousels and lifts | Small high-value parts at the counter | Automated delivery to a pick window | Vertical storage |
A practical rule from the quotes we review: the more part numbers per square foot a room has to hold, the more of the room should be drawers, bins and closed shelving; the more bulk and oversize stock it carries, the more it needs bulk rack and open bays with heavy decks. Mixing them by zone, not by bay, keeps the layout readable for new counter staff.
Equipto V-Grip Steel Parts Shelving

Equipto credits its long position in automotive parts departments to V-Grip shelving combined with modular drawers. V-Grip uses a double-flanged upright: each flange carries a shelf from one adjoining unit only, so bays in a row share posts without loading a single flange twice. Shelves drop over corner reinforcements that seat in tapered upright slots and lock in place, with no clips or hardware.
For a parts manager that means a run of shelving can be re-slotted when a model line changes, without unloading the bays next door.
V-Grip features that matter in a parts room
- Tool-free adjustment on 1-1/2″ centers without disturbing shelves in the adjoining unit, per Equipto’s V-Grip cut sheet.
- Post heights up to 15 ft, multiple widths and depths, open or closed units.
- Heavy-duty 18-gauge shelves flanged on all four sides; front and end reinforcing channels can be added where a shelf carries extra load.
- Reflective white back and end panels on closed units, which brighten deep parts aisles and make labels easier to read.
- Sliding dividers that attach without hardware and adjust left to right, for part families that change size often.
- Bulk storage options: Equipto lists bulk shelves with load capacities from 1,500 to 3,000 lb and longer spans for body parts, exhaust systems and trim.
- Battery flow rack built on the same system, with single flow tracks for spacing and a front stop.
V-Grip also accepts wire shelves, lockable cabinets and drawers in the same uprights, which is why one system can carry a dealership from the counter to the back wall. If you already run another steel shelving brand, Lyon and other open and closed steel shelving lines can extend a room; we match the existing post style before quoting add-on units. Compare the full Equipto line on our Equipto V-Grip shelving page.
Drawers in Shelving and Modular Drawer Cabinets
Small parts are where a parts department wins or loses space. A shelf of open boxes wastes the air above each box; a drawer bank turns the same bay into dozens of labeled compartments. Equipto’s V-Grip drawer units are designed so drawers sit between the shoulders and knees, the “Gold Zone,” so staff are not squatting or stretching for fast movers.
Small-parts drawer cabinets like these handle hardware, bulbs and clips at high count.

Drawers inside V-Grip shelving
- 48 standard drawer sizes, heights from 3″ to 13-1/2″
- 200 lb and 400 lb drawer capacities
- Preconfigured starter and add-on units, 36″ or 48″ wide and 18″ or 24″ deep, with drawer packages such as four 4-1/2″ drawers
- Adjustable divider kits that subdivide a drawer as the part mix changes
Freestanding modular drawer cabinets
- Drawer capacity up to 400 lb with 100% drawer extension
- Independently lockable cabinets for high-value or controlled parts
- Technician and double-bank cabinets that combine drawers with a shelf
- Over 75 standard configurations in Equipto’s automotive line
Use drawers inside the shelving when the parts live in the main room and are picked by counter staff. Use freestanding Equipto modular drawer cabinets at the counter, in the service drive or where parts need to be locked separately. Our modular drawer cabinet guide for automotive parts rooms goes deeper on drawer heights, divider layouts and cabinet widths.
Bin Storage for Small, High-Count Parts

Bins are the low-cost alternative to drawers when small parts turn quickly and quantities change every week. Plastic shelf bins or hopper-front bins sit on standard shelving, so a single bay can mix bin rows with boxed parts above. Metal bin shelving with fixed compartments works well for hardware and fittings that never outgrow their slot.
The tradeoff: bins are faster to relabel and see into, while drawers hold more locations per bay and keep dust off.
Plan bin storage with three numbers: the bin depth that matches the shelf depth (so no shelf space is wasted behind the bin), the number of bins per level, and the label position the counter reads from the aisle. A bin location and labeling system keeps those locations accurate once the room is live. See shelf bins, bin shelving and Borroughs Flexi-Bin shelving for the bin-based systems we supply.
Bulk Rack and Specialty Racks for Oversize Parts
Glass, bumpers, hoods, doors, exhaust, molding and hoses damage easily and waste space on ordinary shelves. Equipto’s specialty racks are built for custom-sized and odd-shaped automotive parts, from hoses, harnesses and mufflers to fenders, hoods, doors and bumpers. V-Grip bulk rack carries cartons and heavy items on long spans.
The windshield bays in this photo use numbered locations so glass is never stacked loose against a wall.

High-Density Mobile Aisle Parts Storage

When a parts room cannot grow, mobile aisle shelving mounts the same shelving on carriages that roll on floor rails, so only one aisle is open at a time. Equipto’s automotive literature describes mobile aisle as a way to save about half the floor space or roughly double capacity in the same footprint. Results depend on the room, the number of carriages and how often each aisle is opened.
Mobile aisle suits reserve stock, slow movers, warranty holds and tires better than the counter’s fastest movers.
Plan mobile aisle with the floor first: rails need a level slab, and the carriage length, crank or handle position and aisle width are set by the heaviest loaded carriage. We often pair a mobile aisle block at the back of the room with fixed V-Grip shelving and drawers nearest the counter. Learn more on our Equipto mobile aisle shelving page and the main mobile shelving hub. For parts kept on hold for warranty or returns, see warranty parts retention storage.
Multi-Level Shelving and Mezzanine Parts Rooms
Most parts rooms have unused height above 7 or 8 ft shelving. Equipto lists three ways to use it: a mezzanine, used when bulk storage is needed on the upper level; a deck-over, where the lower level of shelving supports a complete second-level floor; and a double-deck, two-tier shelving with catwalks and railings between the aisles.
Each can double or even triple the storage on the existing floor without new construction.

| Approach | How it is built | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Mezzanine | Freestanding steel platform with its own columns and decking | Bulk cartons, body parts and overflow stock on the upper level |
| Deck-over | Lower shelving bays carry a full floor surface for the second level | Rooms where the whole upper level is used as open floor |
| Double-deck shelving | Two-tier shelving with catwalks and railings between aisles | Small-parts rooms that want shelving on both levels |
Upper levels involve stairs, guardrails, gates, sprinkler coverage and permits. The building code and your local authority having jurisdiction decide what a project needs, so we coordinate engineering and permit drawings with the system supplier during the quote. Read more in our parts room mezzanine guide, the Equipto mezzanines and stairways page and parts room shelving anchoring and seismic compliance.
Parts Counter, Will-Call and Service Drive Storage

The parts counter is the face of the storage system. Fast movers belong in drawers and shelving within a few steps of the counter, special-order and will-call parts need their own labeled staging, and the service drive needs a clean pass-through for technicians. Equipto service counters combine a workcenter top with modular drawer cabinets for fast-moving parts.
A pass-through window like this keeps customers and technicians at the counter and stock behind it.
Our parts counter and will-call storage guide covers counter heights, staging shelves and pickup flow in detail. Special service tools, which often end up mixed into the parts room, have their own control system in our service department tool room page.
Matching Parts to Storage and Sizing the System
Before choosing a brand or a bay count, sort the active inventory into part families. A dealer management system export with part number, bin location, on-hand quantity and a rough size class is enough to start. Then match each family to a storage type:
| Part family | Typical storage | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Gaskets, clips, fasteners, bulbs, fuses | Drawers in shelving or small-parts drawer cabinets | Divider kits; label every compartment |
| Filters, belts, wiper blades, sensors | Closed shelving with dividers or shelf bins | Group by make and part family |
| Boxed OEM mid-size parts | Open or closed V-Grip shelving, 18″ to 24″ deep | Match shelf depth to the common box |
| Fluids and chemicals in cases | Heavy-duty shelving low in the bay | Keep flammables in approved cabinets |
| Glass, bumpers, hoods, doors | Specialty racks and bulk rack | Protect finished surfaces |
| Exhaust, trim, molding, hoses | Long-span bulk shelving or hanging racks | Store long parts horizontally |
| Batteries | Battery flow rack | First-in, first-out rotation |
| Slow movers, holds, obsolete stock | Mobile aisle or upper level | Review quarterly; see obsolete and core storage |
Illustrative bay-count math
The numbers below are a planning example, not a quote. They show how a location count turns into bays so you can sanity-check a proposal.
Add growth space, usually by leaving empty shelf levels rather than empty bays, and confirm aisle widths for carts and for two people passing. The full aisle, counter and workflow planning method lives in our automotive parts room design and workflow guide; dealer groups rolling one standard across stores can use our parts room standardization page.
Buying Considerations for Parts Department Shelving
Parts rooms are usually built in phases: a new store, a remodel, a relocation or a single zone that has run out of room. Each one changes what the quote should include. A new room can be designed around the system; a remodel has to fit existing walls, lights, sprinklers and doors, and sometimes keep the counter open while work happens.
Rows of low and full-height shelving like these are often staged in sections so stock can move zone by zone.

What drives the quote
- Part mix and location count by family
- Room dimensions, ceiling height, doors and column locations
- Shelving height, depth and open versus closed units
- Drawer packages, bins, dividers and label holders
- Anchoring and any seismic requirements for your area
- Delivery access, installation and phasing
Questions to settle early
- Will the counter stay open during the install?
- Does the OEM or dealer group require a color or layout standard?
- Which zones need locks or restricted access?
- Is a second level or mobile aisle realistic for the floor and ceiling?
- Who maintains bin locations after go-live?
- Is there humidity or corrosion risk in the room? See climate and corrosion.
Reusing existing or used shelving
Used shelving rarely saves as much as it seems. The savings are typically used up by installation, because parts rarely fit well after disassembly and installer time to straighten and fit them costs more than new. Reusing shelving you already own can work, but new is sometimes still cheaper once fix-up time is counted. A quick call to our sales team with pictures of what you have helps decide.
