What a Small Parts Storage System Is
A small parts storage system gives every part number its own labeled location, sized to the part and placed by how often it is used. It is usually built from more than one product: open bin shelving for the bulk of the stock, drawer organizers or louvered panels for the tiniest items at the point of use, and a lockable cabinet for anything that walks away.
The test of a good system is simple. A new employee should be able to find a part from its location code, see at a glance when it is running low, and put a delivery away without asking anyone.
A pile of unlabeled coffee cans, mixed boxes on a shelf or one giant drawer of hardware fails all three.

Signs your current storage is costing you
- Parts get re-ordered while the old stock is still in the building, because nobody could find it.
- Technicians walk to the storeroom more than once per job to find the right size or a substitute.
- Counts never match the system, because mixed parts share a container and nothing has a location code.
- Shelves are full but half empty, with small parts in big boxes and the cube above them wasted.
- Only one person knows where things are, and work slows down whenever that person is out.
Small Parts Storage Options Compared
Five product families cover almost every small-parts room. Most good systems combine two or three of them. Each row links to a deeper guide on that option.
| Option | Best for | Density | Security | Guide |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steel or wire bin shelving | Hundreds to thousands of part numbers in a storeroom | High | Open | Warehouse bin shelving, wire with bins |
| Sloped pick racks | Fast movers picked all day at an assembly line or pick station | Very high per foot | Open | Pick racks |
| Louvered panels and bin rails | Parts at the bench, on a wall or on a mobile rack | Medium | Open | Louvered panels |
| Plastic drawer organizers | Tiny items: terminals, fuses, screws, O-rings | Very high per cubic foot | Closed drawers | See below |
| Bin and drawer cabinets | Tooling, high-value spares, controlled stock | High | Lockable | Bin cabinets |
Low-cost cardboard bins also work well for slow movers and seasonal stock; see corrugated bin shelving.
Match the Storage to the Part
Start from what goes in the bins, not from the shelving catalog. The part’s size, how many you keep and how fast it moves decide the container; the container decides the shelving.
| Parts | Typical container | Typical system | Related guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bolts, nuts, washers, screws | Small open-front bins with dividers, or drawers | Steel bin shelving, drawer organizers | Fastener storage |
| Terminals, fuses, connectors, relays | Clear drawers or small bins; conductive bins if static-sensitive | Drawer organizers, louvered panels, ESD shelving | ESD storage |
| Plumbing and HVAC fittings, valves | Medium bins sorted by size and material | Bin shelving plus van restock area | Contractor shops |
| Bearings, belts, seals, filters | Medium and large bins, boxed spares on shelves | Steel bin shelving, lockable cabinets | Spare parts |
| Automotive and dealership parts | Bins plus boxed parts on shelving | Parts-department shelving | Parts departments |
| Production components and kits | Bins presented to the operator | Pick racks, louvered bench racks | Pick racks |
Parts that do not fit any small bin, such as long stock, hoses or motors, belong on regular shelving next to the bin run, not crammed into oversized bins.
Bolt, Nut and Fastener Storage
Fasteners are the classic small-parts problem: hundreds of sizes that look alike, priced in cents, and expensive only when the right one is missing. The fix is one size per bin, never mixed. Our fastener storage guide goes deeper on bolt bins, drawer cabinets and labeling.
Sort by type, then diameter, then length. Hex bolts together, then by diameter, then by length left to right. Nuts and washers for each diameter sit next to their bolts so a technician grabs a set in one stop.
Use dividers before adding bins. Short lengths of the same diameter can share a divided bin; our shelf bin guide covers divider and bin cup options.

- Label with the full description, for example size, thread, length and grade, not just a part number.
- Put common sizes at waist to shoulder height and rarely used sizes on top and bottom shelves.
- Keep heavy fasteners low. A full bin of large bolts is heavier than it looks; check the shelf rating.
- Color-code bins by material such as zinc, stainless or grade 8, so mix-ups are obvious.
Maintenance and Spare Parts Storage

Plant maintenance, facilities and fleet shops stock a different mix: fewer pieces per part number, more variety in size, and some parts that are expensive and critical. Downtime, not picking speed, is the cost of a missing part.
Group by equipment or system, such as conveyors, HVAC or a production line, so a technician finds everything for one repair in one aisle.
Set min and max levels on every bin. A two-bin or min/max routine, explained in our bin inventory system guide, keeps critical spares from running out.
Lock up what walks away. Tooling, batteries and high-value spares belong in bin storage cabinets or a controlled crib; for crib layouts see tool crib and MRO shelving. Label every location with a code that matches your maintenance software; our bin location labeling guide shows formats that work.
Drawer Organizers for the Smallest Parts
Plastic drawer organizers are the most compact small parts organizer: a molded cabinet with clear pull-out drawers, each with a divider. They stack on a bench or mount on a wall, so tiny parts live where the work happens instead of in the storeroom.
Online sizes run from a 12-drawer unit about 10-1/2″ wide (8 small and 4 larger drawers) to a 39-drawer unit 15″ wide and 18-3/4″ tall with 30 small drawers and 9 larger bins, priced from $20.90 to about $48.
Use them for electrical terminals, fuses, O-rings, springs and anything smaller than a fingertip. Shop the full range in plastic drawer cabinets.

Organizer, shelving or cabinet?
- Under about 50 tiny part numbers at one bench: drawer organizers or a louvered panel.
- Hundreds of part numbers in a storeroom: bin shelving, steel or wire, in 36″ or 42″ modules.
- Parts that need to be locked: a bin cabinet with bins on the doors and shelves.
- High-volume picking at one station: sloped pick racks that tip each bin toward the picker.
Planning a Small Parts Storage System
- Count part numbers, not pieces. Export a part list and group it into small, medium and large; that sets bin sizes and the number of locations. Add 10–20% for growth.
- Decide what is picked where. Fast movers go close to the work, at bench racks or the front of the storeroom; slow movers and reserve stock go behind.
- Choose depth by part length. 12″ deep for hardware and electrical, 18″ for the general mix, 24″ for long parts or larger quantities.
- Plan aisles and egress. Leave room for a person and a cart, and keep exits and electrical panels clear.
- Anchor tall units where required, and tie runs together in busy aisles or seismic areas.
- Label before you load. Location codes on shelves and bins first, then move parts in one family at a time.
