It is a package: a shelving frame with a known shelf depth, a shelf count that matches the bin height, and a bin quantity that fills every level without a gap or an overhang. Wire bin shelving systems: the default industrial build

Wire bin shelving is where most industrial parts rooms land, and for good practical reasons. The open wire deck does not trap dust or hold water, it lets overhead light reach the back of the bin, and it does not shadow a sprinkler head the way a solid steel shelf can. The chrome-plated finish wipes clean, and shelf levels adjust on the post without tools, so a unit that was built for 4" shelf bins can be rebuilt for 12-1/2" Giant Stack containers in an afternoon.

Complete packages are the whole point. A typical stocked build is a 48"W x 18"D x 74"H unit with nine wire shelves, four posts and thirty-six matched containers, and the shelves in these systems carry a published load capacity of up to 800 lb per shelf. Other stocked footprints include 42"W x 18"D x 74"H nine-shelf systems with twenty-four bins, 36"W x 24"D x 74"H nine-shelf systems, 24"W x 36"L x 74"H twelve-shelf systems, and deep 42"D x 36"–54"W x 86"H five-tier systems built for 42"-long rack containers.

Bins ship one color per unit — blue, yellow, red, green, ivory, black or clear — which is what makes department or part-class color coding practical at the system level rather than the bin level. Steel bin shelving units and complete steel packages

Where a wire deck is wrong — a dusty grinding bay, a wall of small hardware that should not be visible from the aisle, an office-adjacent stockroom that has to look finished — steel bin shelving is the answer. The steel line is 22 gauge all-welded construction with a smooth powder-coat finish and cross bracing for stability, in 39" bench height and 75" full height, open or closed. Standard shelf sizes run 12" x 36", 18" x 36" and 18" x 42", in four, five, six and seven-shelf builds.

Closed steel units add back and side panels, which does three useful things at once: it keeps dust off small hardware, it stops bins from being pushed off the back of the shelf into the next aisle, and it makes a run of shelving read as a wall rather than a warehouse. That matters more than people expect in service counters, dealership parts departments and any stockroom a customer can see into.

Complete steel packages exist for the bigger container families too. When bin shelving feeds a conveyor or pack bench, sloped shelves and a short walk beat capacity every time. Layout comes before the model number.

Giant Stack container shelving packages

Giant Stack containers are the wide-mouth answer to bulk parts on shelving. The hopper front is open across nearly the full width, which is what makes them practical for large parts, tools, recycling and warehouse consumables that a normal shelf bin cannot swallow. They are injection molded from high-density tri-clear virgin-grade polypropylene, they resist rust and corrosion, they are impervious to most chemicals, and they stack up to six high when used as a free standing column instead of on shelving. A six 1/4" drill-hole pattern in the base lets you open drainage where a container will be washed or used outdoors, and an optional clear window front raises usable fill height while still letting a picker inspect contents.

As complete shelving packages, the stocked builds are five-shelf systems: an 18"W x 36"L x 74"H unit with twelve 17-1/2" x 10-7/8" x 12-1/2" containers, the same frame with eight of the wider 17-1/2" x 16-1/2" x 12-1/2" containers, a mixed six-and-four build, and an 18"W x 42"L x 74"H unit with eight 15-1/4" x 19-7/8" x 12-7/16" containers. Steel versions of these packages carry up to 400 lb per shelf.

Two width classes exist for a reason. The wide container takes bulky assemblies; the narrow one doubles your pick faces per shelf. Most runs use both.

A dividable grid container sits between a bin and a tote: a closed rectangular container with a molded grid pattern in the base and walls that accepts length and width dividers. That means one container can hold a controlled kit of four, six or nine part numbers without them migrating into each other — which is exactly what a sub-assembly feed or a service kit needs and exactly what an open bin cannot do.

Built as complete wire shelving systems, these are rated for a published load capacity of up to 600–800 lb per shelf, and the containers are stocked in clear as well as solid colors. Clear is worth specifying wherever cycle counting or a shift handover depends on seeing what is left without pulling the container off the shelf.

The same containers are the basis of bin cart systems — for example a 60"W x 24"D x 69"H cart rated up to 1,200 lb carrying four modular drawers of dividable grid containers — so a kit can be built on a shelf and rolled to the cell without being repacked.

Length and width dividers drop into the molded grid, so the same container can be reconfigured when the kit changes.

Sloped pick racks: high-density small-parts picking

A pick rack is bin shelving with the shelves tilted toward the picker. That one change does more for pick speed than any other cheap intervention in a parts room: the open hopper front of every bin faces up and out, so a picker sees the contents and the label from standing height without pulling the bin, and small hardware stops migrating to the back of a flat shelf where nobody can reach it.

The line comes as bench units, single-sided free standing units, double-sided free standing units and mobile units, all supplied complete with the shelf bins. Bench racks are roughly 12-1/2"L x 36"W x 23"H with three sloped shelves, carrying anywhere from 9 to 36 bins depending on bin width. Single-sided free standing racks at 12"L x 36"W x 60"H with eight shelves carry 32 to 96 bins. Tall steel-frame builds go further: a 12"D x 36"W x 75"H thirteen-shelf system holds up to 144 bins, and 18" deep versions hold up to 96 of the deeper bins.

Double-sided racks are the option most people underuse. In an open floor area, a double-sided unit gives two pick faces per aisle foot instead of one, and the matching mobile kit (two rigid and two braked swivel hard-rubber casters, up to 1,200 lb load capacity) turns it into a staging island that can be moved for a changeover.

Mobile bin shelving and bin transport

Mobility is the cheapest layout change available. Instead of redesigning an aisle, a mobile bin shelving unit lets the bins go to the job — to the machine during a changeover, to the pack bench during a peak, to the dock during a return-processing push — and come back to the wall afterwards.

Three mechanisms cover it. The WR-00H mobile kit is a set of four swivel thermoplastic resin 5" x 1-1/4" casters, two with brakes, rated for up to 1,200 lb load capacity, and it can be fitted to the wire systems on this page. It is recommended only for shelves 18" and deeper, because a narrow unit on tall casters is a tipping risk once it is loaded. Double-sided pick racks use their own mobile kit, also rated up to 1,200 lb, with two rigid and two braked swivel hard-rubber casters. And selected large containers come as mobile bins on four braked 3" polyurethane casters, up to 250 lb mobile load capacity, that still stack with the casters in place.

For moving bins rather than shelving, the QRC-4D mobile rail cart is a 36"L x 24"W x 35-1/2"H all-welded 16-gauge cold-rolled steel cart with a powder-coated gray finish, two rigid and two braked swivel poly casters, and up to 800 lb load capacity. It accepts six sizes of hang-and-stack bin — up to 64 bins on one cart — and its flat top with raised edges doubles as a work surface. Bins are ordered separately so you can match an existing plant standard.

When bin shelving should be a bin cabinet instead

Open bin shelving is faster to pick from and cheaper per bin, and it is the right answer most of the time. There are three situations where it is not: when the parts walk away, when the parts must stay clean, and when the shelving sits in a public or semi-public area where an open wall of bins reads as clutter. In all three, the same bins go inside an all-welded steel cabinet instead.

  • Security. Three-point locking handles, mesh and clear-acrylic door options, and cabinets that arrive fully assembled and ready to use.

How to size a bin shelving system

Five decisions, in this order. Taken in this sequence a bin shelving quote almost never needs to be revised; taken out of order it usually does.

Measure the space, not the bins

Clear floor footprint, ceiling and sprinkler clearance, aisle width for the equipment that has to pass, and whether the run sits against a wall or free standing. This decides depth, height and single- versus double-sided before any bin is chosen.

Pick the depth

12″ for small hardware, 18″ for the general parts-room mix, 24″ for deeper or bulkier bins, 42″ for rack-depth containers. Depth is the hardest thing to change later, so it goes second.

Choose flat or sloped shelves

Sloped for fast-moving small parts a person picks all day. Flat where cube matters more than speed, or where containers are lifted off the shelf rather than reached into.

Match shelf count to bin height

A 74″ frame carries 5, 6, 8, 9, 10 or 12 levels depending on bin height. This is where a complete package earns its keep — the shelf count and bin count arrive already matched.

Decide mobility and accessories last

Mistakes we see most often

Buying shelving and bins separately. The bins arrive an inch too deep, or there are eleven for a shelf that takes twelve, and the run never quite fills.

Ordering one bin size for the whole unit. A single size guarantees a third of the bins are two-thirds empty. Three sizes across the same run normally costs less overall.

Mobilizing a shallow unit. A 12" deep unit on 5" casters is a tipping risk when it is loaded. Mobile kits are recommended for shelves 18" and deeper.

Forgetting the picker. Fast-moving parts belong between waist and eye height on sloped shelves. Slow bulk belongs low or high. Movement, not size, drives the layout.

Bin shelving is a shelving unit specified around the plastic bins it will carry, rather than around boxes or loose stock. The shelf depth, the number of shelf levels and the bin size and count are matched to each other, so every level fills completely and every bin opening faces the picker. It is normally bought as a complete package — frame, posts, shelves and bins in one model number — which is what keeps a run of shelving from ending up with the wrong bins in it.
How much weight can bin shelving hold?
It depends on the build and we only quote published figures. Wire bin shelving systems carry a published load capacity of up to 800 lb per shelf, and dividable grid container systems are rated up to 600–800 lb per shelf. Complete steel shelving packages for Giant Stack containers are rated up to 400 lb per shelf. Mobile kits are rated up to 1,200 lb. We confirm the rating for the specific model on the quote rather than quoting the top of the range.
What is the difference between wire and steel bin shelving?
Wire bin shelving uses a chrome-plated open wire deck: it does not trap dust or water, it lets overhead light reach the back of the bin, and shelf levels adjust on the post without tools. Steel bin shelving uses 22 gauge all-welded solid shelves and can be closed with back and side panels, which keeps dust off small hardware, stops bins being pushed off the back, and gives a finished face in a customer-facing area. Wire is the default in most parts rooms; steel wins in dusty, secure or visible spaces.
What shelf depth should I choose?
12" for high-count small hardware and pick racks, 18" for the general parts-room mix (this is the most common depth by a wide margin), 24" for deeper shelf bins and larger open-hopper containers, and 36"–42" five-tier systems for 42"-long rack containers. Depth is the hardest thing to change after installation, so measure the clear floor space and the aisle width you need before picking a bin.
Do complete packages really include the bins?
Yes. A complete package ships as a matched kit: the wire or steel shelving with its posts, the specified number of flat or sloped shelves, and a stated bin model and quantity. For example a 48"W x 18"D x 74"H wire system with nine shelves and thirty-six matched containers, or a 12"D x 36"W x 75"H thirteen-shelf pick rack with up to 144 shelf bins. Bins in packaged systems ship one color per unit.
Can bin shelving be made mobile?
Yes. The WR-00H mobile kit is four swivel thermoplastic resin 5" x 1-1/4" casters, two with brakes, rated up to 1,200 lb, and it fits the wire systems on this page. It is recommended only for shelves 18" and deeper — a shallow unit on tall casters is a tipping risk once loaded. Double-sided pick racks use their own mobile kit, also rated up to 1,200 lb, with two rigid and two braked swivel hard-rubber casters. Because the kit bolts on, you can buy stationary now and mobilize later.
What are sloped pick racks for?
Sloped shelves tilt the whole shelf toward the picker so every bin’s open hopper front and label are visible from standing height without pulling the bin out. They are the right build wherever a person picks small parts all day. The line covers bench units at roughly 12-1/2"L x 36"W x 23"H, single-sided free standing units at 12"L x 36"W x 60"H, double-sided units for two pick faces per aisle foot, tall 13-shelf systems holding up to 144 bins, and mobile versions of the double-sided racks.
What colors are available, and can I color-code by department?
Bins in packaged systems are stocked in blue, yellow, red, green, ivory, black and clear, supplied one color per unit — which is exactly what makes system-level color coding practical. Order the maintenance aisle yellow and the production aisle blue and nobody has to read a label to know they are in the wrong row. Additional colors can be quoted subject to an upcharge and a minimum run quantity. We normally recommend locking the scheme in with moulded label holders and printed inserts so it survives staff turnover.
Should I replace my existing shelving or add bins to it?
Usually add bins. Most sound industrial shelving will accept shelf bins, dividers and label holders without being replaced, and reusing the frame is nearly always the cheapest version of the project. Replacement makes sense when the depth is wrong for the bins you need, when the unit is corroded or out of square, or when you are moving from flat to sloped shelves for picking speed.
