Corrugated Shipping Boxes
The largest category in the store: nearly 2,000 stock sizes from a 4 x 4 x 4 in. cube to a 48 x 40 x 48 in. gaylord. Standard boxes are 200 lb test / 32 ECT single-wall kraft; heavy-duty boxes step up to 275 lb / 44 ECT; double-wall boxes carry 275 to 350 lb for machinery, bulk and export loads.
How to pick a box grade. Use standard 200 lb boxes for products up to about 40 lb per carton that are cushioned inside. Move to heavy-duty 275 lb for 40 to 65 lb, sharp or dense products, and any carton that will be stacked several high on a pallet. Choose double-wall for 65 lb and up, parts with hard edges, or anything that will ride LTL freight without a pallet. White boxes are the same board with a bleached outer liner for retail and medical presentation.
Flat boxes suit framed art, panels and apparel; long and tall boxes suit rods, lamps, golf clubs and fixtures; multi-depth boxes score every two inches so one SKU serves several heights; side-loading boxes protect mirrors, TVs and doors.

Protective packaging keeps the product from touching the box wall and keeps it from moving. Bubble and foam handle the first job; loose fill, air pillows and paper handle the second. Most packing stations use two of the three.
Bubble comes in 3/16 in. (small, for light items and surface protection), 5/16 in. (the all-purpose size) and 1/2 in. (large, for heavy or fragile items). Perforated rolls tear at 12 in. intervals; self-seal bubble pouches are faster for repeat sizes. Foam rolls and sheets protect finished surfaces — furniture, cabinets, electronics, glass — without leaving marks, and cloud foam sheets line cases and drawers.
Void fill options: loose fill peanuts in bulk bags with hopper dispensers, MINI PAK’R inflatable air pillows and quilts, Instapak Quick expandable foam bags for heavy irregular parts, singleface corrugated for wrapping cylinders and furniture legs.

Paper is the sustainable void fill: recyclable with the box, cheap by the pound and fast to crumple. It also wraps, interleaves and lines.
Kraft paper rolls (30 to 60 lb basis weight, 18 to 48 in. wide) are the workhorse for wrapping and stuffing; indented kraft adds cushioning by embossing the sheet; bogus paper is a lower-cost gray recycled grade for interleaving. Newsprint sheets wrap dishes and glassware. Crinkle paper and gift-grade tissue finish retail and subscription boxes. Butcher and freezer paper serve food processors and restaurants.

Stretch film holds a pallet load together; shrink film wraps and protects individual products. Both are sold by the case, and machine film is sold by the skid.
Hand stretch wrap comes in 12, 15 and 18 in. widths and 60 to 120 gauge. Blown film is tougher and quieter to apply; cast film is clearer and stretches farther. Opaque and colored films hide contents or color-code loads; 5 in. extended-core bundling film ties pipe, lumber and cartons. Machine stretch wrap (20 in. x 5,000 to 6,500 ft, 70 to 90 gauge) runs on turntable and rotary-arm wrappers — see our stretch wrap machines page for equipment. Vented pallet wrap lets produce and hot-filled loads breathe.

Strapping secures cartons to a pallet, bundles long stock and closes heavy boxes that tape cannot hold. Edge protectors keep the strap from crushing the carton and stiffen the whole load.
Polypropylene strapping (hand grade on 8 x 8 in. cores, machine grade on 9 x 8 in. cores) is the economical choice for cartons and light bundles; polyester strapping holds tension like steel for bricks, lumber and machinery without the sharp edges; steel strapping remains the answer for coils and extreme loads. Handling labels tell the carrier how to treat the carton; thermal and laser labels carry the address and barcode; packing list envelopes keep paperwork on the outside of the box where receiving can find it.
Stock handling labels (Fragile, This Side Up, Do Not Double Stack, Perishable, Team Lift) come 500 to a roll. Direct thermal labels (4 x 6 in. is the carrier standard) run in Zebra-class desktop and industrial printers with no ribbon; thermal transfer labels with wax or resin ribbons survive freezers, chemicals and outdoor storage. Laser sheet labels handle small-volume shipping from an office printer. Pre-wired manila tags and warehouse rack labels round out the category.

Four decisions account for most packaging cost and most shipping damage. Get them right once and reorders become routine.
1. Right-size the box. Carriers bill dimensional weight, so two inches of extra box on every side can add 30 percent to a parcel bill and doubles the void fill you buy. Measure the product, add cushioning thickness on each side, and pick the closest stock size. Our box measuring guide and shipping box dimensions guide walk through it.
2. Match the grade to the weight and the trip. 200 lb single-wall for parcels under 40 lb; 275 lb or double-wall for heavier, stacked or LTL shipments.
3. Choose one cushioning system per station. Bubble for surface protection, paper or air pillows for void fill, foam for finished goods. Mixing three systems slows packers and triples inventory.
4. Standardize tape and film. One carton tape, one hand film gauge and one label size per station cuts SKUs and lets you buy by the case or skid. Read mil vs gauge to compare film specs.
