How to Choose Packing Tape
Carton sealing tape comes down to three choices. Adhesive: hot melt grabs fast and seals most corrugated at the lowest cost; acrylic is clear, resists yellowing and holds up in long storage and sunlight; natural rubber sticks best to dusty, recycled or cold cartons. Thickness: economy tapes run about 1.6 to 1.9 mil, general-purpose about 2 to 2.5 mil, heavy-duty 2.6 mil and up for heavy or overstuffed boxes. Width: 2″ (48 mm) for most parcels, 3″ (72 mm) for large and heavy cartons.
Roll length matters for labor: 55 yd rolls are light, 110 yd rolls halve the number of roll changes, and machine-length rolls feed automatic case sealers.

Sealing method: run one strip down the center seam with 2 to 3 inches down each end panel. For heavy cartons add strips across both edge seams (the H pattern). Press the tape down firmly; pressure, not just contact, is what sets a pressure-sensitive adhesive.
Colored and Pre-Printed Tape
Colored tape is the cheapest visual system in a warehouse: one color per carrier, route, customer or priority lets pickers and loaders sort at a glance. Pre-printed tape carries a message on every inch, such as fragile, handle with care, rush or inspected, so handlers see the instruction from any side of the box.

Water-Activated Kraft Tape
Water-activated tape (gummed paper tape) uses a starch adhesive that is moistened as it dispenses. It bonds into the carton fibers instead of sitting on top, so it holds on dusty boxes, cannot be peeled and resealed without visible damage, and is paper you can recycle with the box. Reinforced grades carry fiberglass strands for heavy cartons.
It needs a water-activated tape dispenser at the bench.

Strapping and Filament Tape
Filament (strapping) tape is reinforced with fiberglass strands for bundling pipe and lumber, reinforcing heavy cartons and holding parts together in transit. For pallet loads use poly or steel strapping instead.
