Loads That Leave a Utah Dock Have to Arrive Intact

Salt Lake City sits at the crossroads of I-15 and I-80, and a large share of the freight that leaves Utah warehouses rides hundreds of miles on LTL trailers before anyone touches it again. Stretch film, strapping and corner protection are what hold that pallet together.

A pallet that shifts in transit costs far more than the film that would have prevented it: damaged cartons, a freight claim, a reship and an unhappy customer. Most load failures trace back to a handful of causes — film too thin for the load, too few wraps at the base, no top-to-pallet tie-in, strapping cutting into unprotected corners, or tension that relaxes over a long, cold run across Wyoming or down to Las Vegas.

This page is the load-securement companion to our Utah packaging and shipping supplies page. It groups every product we sell for wrapping, banding and protecting pallets — each with a live price and a link to its product page — and explains how Utah warehouses, 3PLs and plants typically choose between them.

  • Hand stretch wrap from 12 to 18 in. wide and 60 to 120 gauge, plus extended-core and opaque black film

Hand Stretch Wrap, Extended-Core Film and Dispensers

Hand wrap is still how most Utah docks secure mixed, short-run and outbound LTL pallets. Choosing the right width and gauge is most of the job.

Width follows the person wrapping and the load: 12 in. film is light and easy to control for small pallets and bundles; 15 in. is the general-purpose width; 18 in. covers a standard pallet in fewer passes and is the usual choice for full-height loads. Gauge is film thickness — roughly 60 to 70 gauge for light, uniform cartons, 80 gauge for everyday mixed pallets, 90 gauge for heavier loads and 120 gauge where sharp corners, irregular shapes or heavy product would puncture thinner film.

Extended-core film has a cardboard core that sticks out past the roll so it can be held without a dispenser; opaque black film hides high-value or confidential product from view on the trailer. A hand-held dispenser or hand-saver lets the operator hold tension without burning palms, and a dedicated stretch-wrap cutter keeps knives off the dock.

Load Typical hand film Tip
Light, uniform cartons (e-commerce, apparel) 12–15 in., 60–70 gauge Wrap the base three times before climbing
Everyday mixed pallets 15–18 in., 80 gauge Overlap each pass by roughly half the film width
Heavy cases, beverages, parts 18 in., 90 gauge Roll the film into a rope at the top to tie the load to the pallet
Sharp corners, hardware, lumber, metal 18 in., 120 gauge, or add edge protectors Protect corners before wrapping rather than over-wrapping

Wrapping on Cold Utah Docks

From November through March, Wasatch Front docks, Cache Valley plants and Tooele yards run at temperatures that change how stretch film behaves.

Forklift moving wrapped pallets between outdoor galvanized pallet racks in a plowed Utah storage yard in winter

Polyethylene film gets stiffer and less clingy when it is cold. A roll carried in from an unheated trailer or a dock rack next to an open door will not stretch as far, will tear more easily at the dispenser and may not tack to itself on the last wrap. Utah warehouses that ship through the winter usually:

  • Store film rolls in a heated area and bring out only what the shift will use
  • Move up one gauge for loads that sit on an outdoor staging lane or ride in an unheated trailer
  • Add an extra base wrap and a rope at the top so the load is tied to the pallet, not just to itself
  • Band heavy loads with strapping instead of relying on film alone for long winter runs

Summer brings the opposite problem: dry, high-altitude sun on outdoor storage. Wrapped pallets that sit in a yard for weeks are better protected under a pallet cover or opaque film than clear film alone. For the wrapping itself, see our guides to stretch wrapping a pallet and pallet stretch wrapping.

Machine Stretch Film: Cast, Blown, Colored and Vented

Once a Utah dock is wrapping more than a few dozen pallets a shift, a stretch wrap machine and machine-grade film pay for themselves in labor and film savings.

Machine film comes on 20 and 30 in. rolls sold by the skid for turntable and rotary-arm wrappers. Cast film is clear, unwinds quietly and gives consistent cling — the default for most distribution and manufacturing loads. Blown film is typically tougher and more puncture-resistant, a better fit for irregular or heavy loads. Colored film color-codes pallets by customer, route or shift so they can be sorted at a glance across a big 3PL building. Vented pallet wrap and stretch netting let air move through the load for produce, plants, fresh-baked goods or anything that must breathe.

Choosing the machine itself — turntable, rotary arm or orbital — is covered on our stretch wrap machines page, and the dock around it on loading dock equipment.

Poly and Polyester Strapping for Pallets and Bundles

Film holds cartons to each other; strapping holds heavy loads to the pallet and bundles long product together. Many Utah shippers use both.

Warehouse worker tightening black poly strapping with a hand tensioner over edge protectors on a wrapped pallet

Polypropylene (poly) strapping is the everyday choice for cartons, light pallets and bundling. It is economical, easy to cut and applied by hand with buckles or seals. Polyester strapping holds its tension better over time and is widely used as an alternative to steel on heavy, rigid loads such as brick, block, lumber, stone and metal. Poly cord strapping is a woven strap tensioned with buckles — common for palletized loads shipped without a strapping tool at the receiving end. Pallet bands are pre-sized loop bands for unitizing light loads without tools.

A complete strapping kit packs the strap coil, a dispenser carton, a tensioner, a sealer and seals together — the fastest way to equip a new shipping area. Busy docks add a strapping cart so the coil, tools and seals travel to the pallet.

Strapping Best for How it is applied
Polypropylene (poly) Cartons, light pallets, bundles, general shipping Hand tensioner and metal seals or wire buckles
Polyester (PET) Heavy, rigid loads; long-haul pallets that must keep tension Tensioner with serrated seals or friction-weld tools
Poly cord (woven) Pallets and crates without a strapping tool on site Hand-tensioned through wire buckles
Pallet bands Quick unitizing of light pallets and totes Slipped over the load by hand, no tools

Strapping Tools, Seals and Buckles

The right tensioner and seal matter as much as the strap. Match the tool width to the strap width on every order.

A tensioner pulls the strap tight around the load; a sealer crimps a metal seal to lock it; open or snap-on seals slip over overlapping strap ends; wire buckles join poly cord and poly strap without a sealer. Most strapping problems on a Utah dock come from mismatched sizes — a 1/2 in. seal on 5/8 in. strap will not hold — so order seals, buckles and tools with the strap size in hand.

Keep a spare tensioner at each strapping station: a worn gripper will slip under load long before it fails completely, and slack straps are what show up as damage claims.

Edge Protectors, Pallet Covers and Slip Sheets

Corner and top protection turns a wrapped pallet into a load that can be strapped tight, stacked and stored.

Edge protectors (corner boards) spread strap tension across the carton edge so the strap cannot cut in, and stiffen the load for stacking; printed “Do Not Double Stack” boards tell every carrier handler what not to do. Strapping protectors are short corner pieces used just under the strap. Pallet covers — clear for identification or black for concealment — keep dust, dripping water and sun off the top of the load. Corrugated sheets and pads go between layers as tier sheets or on the pallet deck so cartons do not snag on boards.

How Utah Operations Secure Their Loads

Different Utah industries lean on different parts of the load-securement kit.

Operation Where in Utah What they typically reorder
3PLs and distribution centers Salt Lake Northwest Quadrant, West Valley, Tooele, Ogden Machine film by the skid, colored film for routing, pallet covers, corrugated tier sheets
E-commerce and consumer brands Lehi, Draper, American Fork, Orem 15–18 in. 80 gauge hand wrap, bundling film, hand dispensers
Food and beverage Salt Lake, Ogden, Cache Valley Heavier gauge film for beverage cases, vented wrap and netting for produce and bakery
Manufacturers and building products West Valley, Spanish Fork, Clearfield, Cedar City Polyester strapping, edge protectors, 120 gauge film for sharp or heavy loads
Movers, contractors and installers Wasatch Front and St. George Extended-core film, poly strapping kits, pallet bands

Outbound LTL is where load securement pays off. A pallet leaving Salt Lake City for Denver, Boise, Phoenix or Las Vegas may be cross-docked two or three times, and each forklift move is a chance for an under-wrapped load to lean. A corner-boarded, strapped and fully wrapped pallet arrives the way it left — and when it is received, it is easy to check against the bill of lading.

Receiving teams benefit too: a consistent wrap pattern and a label on every pallet make it quicker to break down inbound freight onto pallet rack or shelving.

Pallet Load-Securement Checklist

1

Build a square load

Stack cartons column- or interlock-style inside the pallet footprint, heaviest at the bottom, with no overhang.

2

Protect the corners

Place edge protectors on vertical corners of heavy or tall loads, and a tier sheet between unstable layers.

3

Wrap the base first

Three or more wraps at the bottom, catching the pallet deck, so the load is tied to the pallet.

4

Climb with overlap

Overlap each pass by about half the film width; finish with a rope of film across the top edge.

5

Strap heavy loads

Band loads that are heavy, rigid or riding long distances, and match seals and tools to the strap width.

6

Cover and label

Add a pallet cover for outdoor storage or dust, and a Do Not Double Stack board or label where needed.

Stretch Wrap & Strapping FAQ

Where can I buy stretch wrap in Salt Lake City?
Material Handling USA, headquartered at 222 S. Main St. in Salt Lake City, sells hand and machine stretch wrap online with live prices and quotes skid quantities with freight to Utah docks. Call (801) 328-8788 for Utah orders.
What gauge stretch wrap should I use?
As a rule of thumb, 60 to 70 gauge for light uniform cartons, 80 gauge for everyday mixed pallets, 90 gauge for heavier loads and 120 gauge for sharp-edged or very heavy loads. Use the lightest film that holds your load reliably, and protect sharp corners with edge protectors rather than over-wrapping.
What is the difference between cast and blown stretch film?
Cast film is clear, quiet to unwind and consistently clingy, which makes it the default for most loads. Blown film is typically tougher and more puncture-resistant, so it suits irregular or heavy loads. Both are available as hand and machine film.
Does cold weather affect stretch wrap?
Yes. Cold film is stiffer, stretches less and clings less, so it can tear or fail to tack on the last wrap. Store rolls in a heated area, consider one gauge heavier for loads staged outdoors or shipped in unheated trailers, and add strapping on heavy loads.
Should I use poly or polyester strapping?
Poly strapping is economical and suits cartons, light pallets and bundles. Polyester holds its tension better over time and is often used instead of steel on heavy, rigid loads. Match the seals, buckles and tools to the strap width either way.
Do I need edge protectors if I stretch wrap?
For light cartons, film alone is often enough. For heavy, tall or strapped loads, edge protectors spread strap tension, stop straps cutting into cartons and stiffen the pallet for stacking.
Can you deliver machine film by the skid in Utah?
Yes. Machine film, strapping coils and edge protectors are quoted by the skid or mixed pallet with freight to your dock anywhere along the Wasatch Front and statewide. Some common sizes are in stock at select manufacturers, subject to confirmation.
Do you sell stretch wrap machines too?
Yes. We supply turntable and rotary-arm stretch wrappers, plus the loading dock equipment, pallet rack and packing stations around them, from the same Salt Lake City team.
