How to Choose a Poly Bag

Three choices decide the right bag: style (how it closes), thickness (how much abuse it takes) and size (how the product fits). Style first: reclosable bags for parts and anything opened more than once, flat bags for one-time packing that you seal, gusseted bags when the product has depth, and poly tubing when you need odd lengths.

Thickness is measured in mils, thousandths of an inch. A 1 mil bag protects light, soft goods from dust; 2 mil is the all-purpose middle; 4 mil handles hardware and sharp corners; 6 to 8 mil is for heavy parts and repeated handling. Our mil to gauge guide converts other thickness units.

Sizing: bags are listed width x length (gusseted bags width x depth x length). For a flat item, make the bag at least as wide as the item’s width plus its thickness, and as long as its length plus its thickness, then add about 1/2″ each way for easy loading. Leave extra length if you will heat seal or fold the top over.

Reclosable Zipper Bags

Press-to-close zipper bags in 1.5 to 8 mil, including 2 mil reclosable bags (the most-ordered weight), white-block write-on bags, colored bags for coding, slider bags and hang-hole bags. 2 mil reclosable bags suit most small parts and samples; 4, 6 and 8 mil reclosable bags stand up to fasteners, fittings and sharp threads. Colored bags let you color-code by job or bin, and white-block bags take a marker without a separate label.

Gusseted bags have folded side panels that open into a box shape, so they fit bulky or boxed items and line cartons and totes without stretching. Use them as carton liners for food, powders and loose parts, or as covers for tall items that will not fit a flat bag.

Poly Tubing: Make Any Length of Bag

Poly tubing is a continuous flattened tube on a roll. Pull off the length you need, seal one end, load the product and seal the other. It is the answer for long or odd-sized items such as rods, rolled goods, extrusions and trim, and it cuts inventory because one roll covers many bag lengths.

Tubing is listed width x roll length. 1.5 mil poly tubing and 2 mil poly tubing rolls cover light goods; 4 and 6 mil for heavier parts. Pair it with an impulse sealer and a roll dispenser at the bench.

What does mil mean on a poly bag?
A mil is one thousandth of an inch. A 2 mil bag is 0.002 inch thick. The higher the mil, the tougher and more puncture resistant the bag.
What thickness of poly bag should I use?
1 to 1.5 mil for light, soft goods; 2 mil for general packing and small parts; 3 to 4 mil for hardware and sharp edges; 6 to 8 mil for heavy industrial parts.
How are poly bag sizes measured?
Width x length, measured inside, with the opening along the width. Gusseted bags add the gusset depth: width x depth x length.
What is the difference between flat and reclosable poly bags?
Flat bags are open at the top and are sealed with heat, tape or a twist tie. Reclosable bags have a press-to-close zipper so they can be opened and closed many times.
When should I use a gusseted bag?
When the product has depth, such as a boxed item, a stack of parts or bulk product, or when you are lining a carton or tote.
What is poly tubing used for?
Making bags of any length. Cut the tube to length and seal both ends. It suits long or odd-sized items and replaces many stock bag sizes with one roll.
Are polypropylene bags better than polyethylene?
Polypropylene is clearer and crisper for display. Polyethylene is softer, stretchier and more puncture resistant, so it is better for heavy or sharp items.
