How to Choose Shipping Labels

Start with the printer. Direct thermal labels darken under the printhead with no ribbon, so they are the cheapest choice for shipping labels that only need to last until delivery. Thermal transfer labels use a wax or resin ribbon and resist heat, light and abrasion, so they suit inventory, product and pallet labels that must last. Laser labels come on sheets for office printers when volume is low.

Then match size and roll core to the printer: 4 x 6″ is the standard carrier shipping label, and desktop printers take smaller rolls than industrial printers.

Shipping, Inventory and Inspection Tags

Tags go where a label cannot: on coils, bundles, pallets, equipment and anything without a flat clean surface. Manila and colored shipping tags come plain, pre-strung or pre-wired; Tyvek tags resist tearing and water outdoors. Numbered inventory tags with tear-off stubs run physical counts, and inspection and repair tags mark status on the shop floor.

4 x 6 inches is the standard parcel shipping label size for UPS, FedEx and USPS label printers.
What is the difference between direct thermal and thermal transfer labels?
Direct thermal labels darken under heat with no ribbon and fade over time, which suits shipping labels. Thermal transfer labels print through a ribbon and last much longer, which suits inventory, product and pallet labels.
Do you sell bilingual shipping and handling labels?
Yes. English/Spanish handling labels such as Fragile / Fragil – Maneje con cuidado are in the shipping and handling labels category.
Where should handling labels go on a box?
On the top and on at least two adjacent sides so the instruction is visible however the carton is turned.
Which ribbon do I need for thermal transfer labels?
Wax ribbons for paper labels, wax-resin for coated paper and light durability, and resin for synthetic labels that need chemical and abrasion resistance. Match the ribbon width and core to your printer.
What are inventory tags used for?
Physical inventory counts. Each numbered tag has a stub; one part stays on the stock and one goes to the count sheet so every location is counted once.
