When open bin shelving should be a bin cabinet

A bin cabinet is bin shelving with a lockable steel skin around it, and the reason to buy one is almost never storage capacity. Open bin shelving is faster to pick from, cheaper per bin, and easier to reconfigure. It is the right answer most of the time. A cabinet earns its cost in exactly four situations, and it is worth being honest about which one you are in before you spend the money.

Parts walk away. Consumables, cutting tools, fittings and electrical components disappear from open shelving and nobody can say when. A three-point locking handle with two keys ends the argument.
Parts have to stay clean. Grinding dust, coolant mist, welding spatter and overspray settle into every open bin in the bay. A closed 14 gauge box keeps them out.
Someone can see the shelving. Service counters, dealership parts departments and office-adjacent stockrooms need one finished gray or beige box, not an exposed wall of mixed bins.
Density per square foot matters more than pick speed. Because bins hang on the door panels as well as the back wall, a single 36" cabinet can hold over a hundred bins in six square feet of floor.

How these cabinets ship

Every cabinet in this range is 14 gauge all-welded construction and arrives completely assembled and ready to use — there is no frame to bolt together on the dock. Finish is a gray or beige powder coat, and the bins are included in the stated model and quantity, supplied one color per unit. If you want a beige cabinet instead of gray, that is a suffix on the model number, not a special order.

36" all-welded bin cabinets: the standard workhorse

The 36" wide cabinet is where most industrial bin cabinet projects start, because it fits between a doorway and a wall corner and still swallows an entire small-parts inventory. Two door depths exist and the difference matters: a deep door model at 24" deep hangs bins on the door panels as well as the back wall and is the high-density option, while a flush door model at 18" deep gives up bin count for a shallower footprint in a tight aisle.

Stocked configurations span a wide range of priorities. A 36"W x 24"D x 72"H deep-door build carries 68 bins across five bin sizes. Another carries 102 bins plus three adjustable shelves, with the interior shelves rated up to 800 lb each. An all-small-bin build carries 96 bins plus four adjustable interior shelves. A shelf-heavy build swaps most of the bins for four adjustable interior shelves and twelve door shelves, with door shelves rated up to 60 lb each. And the flush-door 36"W x 18"D x 72"H model carries 36 larger bins for medium parts.

All of them ship completely assembled with a three-point locking handle and two keys, in 14 gauge all-welded steel with a gray or beige powder-coat finish. Bins come one color per unit — blue, yellow, red, green, ivory, black or clear — so a cabinet can be visually assigned to a department or a part class the day it lands. When shelves beat bins

Every parts room has awkward items — aerosols, bottles, cartons, gauges. Adjustable-shelf builds exist in every width for exactly those, and most plants buy one alongside a bin cabinet.

The 48" format is the bridge between a bin cabinet and a general storage cabinet. At 48"W x 24"D x 78"H it takes a serious inventory without the fork-truck footprint of the colossal sizes, and two quite different builds exist.

The bin build is a flush-door cabinet with 64 bins, punched panels on the inside rear wall and on both doors, and two adjustable interior shelves rated up to 400 lb each. The punched panel is the useful detail: bins relocate anywhere on the panel rather than sitting on fixed rails, so the layout can be rebuilt as the part mix changes.

The all-purpose build drops the bins entirely for three adjustable shelves, also rated up to 400 lb each. In practice most plants buy one of each: bins for the fasteners and fittings, shelves for the cans, cartons and boxed spares that a bin cannot hold. Both are available in beige as well as gray. A 48" cabinet is also the format used for the combined bin-and-drawer build — a louvered door carrying 128 small bins with interior shelves holding 15 interlocking drawer units, rated up to 400 lb per interior shelf.

60" and 72" wide colossal bin cabinets

The super-wide cabinets exist for one job: replacing an entire run of open shelving with a single lockable unit. At 60"W x 24"D x 84"H and 72"W x 24"D x 84"H they carry bin counts no other format reaches — 227 bins in the 60" flush-door build, 264 bins in the 72", and shelf-mixed versions with 185 bins plus three adjustable shelves or 84 larger bins plus three adjustable shelves, the interior shelves rated up to 500 lb each.

Two practical details decide whether these fit your building. First, the doors are wide: a 60" cabinet measures 115" wide with the doors fully open and the 72" measures 139". That clearance has to exist in front of the cabinet or the far bins are unreachable. Second, they are heavy — ship weights run from roughly 860 lb to over 1,000 lb assembled — but 6" high legs make them fork-truck liftable, so relocating one during a plant reorganisation is a lift, not a disassembly.

The locking handle on these models is a three-point mechanism with a provision for a padlock, which is not supplied. If your site standard is a keyed-alike or combination system, tell us at quote time and we will specify to it rather than guess.

Security and vision-door cabinets

A solid door secures the contents and hides them at the same time, and hiding them is a real cost: nobody cycle counts a cabinet they have to open, and a stores clerk cannot see from the aisle that a bin is empty. Two door types solve that without giving up the lock.

These are pick racks inside a locking cabinet. A 36"W x 18"D x 78"H flush-door build carries eight sloped shelves and one flat shelf and up to 72 open-front shelf bins, with interior shelves rated up to 400 lb each. Alternative configurations trade bin count for bin size: 45 medium bins, or 36 of the wider bins. The sloped shelves tilt every bin opening toward the picker, so this is the build to specify where high-value small parts need both fast picking and a lock — a tool crib window, a service department, a night-shift stores area.

Interlocking drawer cabinet systems

Interlocking storage cabinets are modular polystyrene drawer units, all measuring 11-3/8"D x 11-3/4"W x 11"H overall, that interlock horizontally and vertically so a wall of small-parts drawers can be grown one module at a time. Pre-drilled holes on the rear allow wall mounting. Drawers are removable, will not rust or corrode, have a recessed handle and a slotted label holder, and carry seven moulded divider slots so one drawer can be split into several compartments. A clear window in each drawer lets a picker identify contents without opening it. Nine pre-configured systems ship complete with drawers, clear windows and two dividers per drawer; cabinet exteriors are gray, with drawers in gray, blue, red or ivory.

How to specify a bin cabinet

Five decisions, and the first two are the ones people skip.

Measure the door swing, not just the cabinet

A 60″ cabinet is 115″ wide with the doors fully open and a 72″ cabinet is 139″. If that clearance does not exist in front of the unit, the far bins are unreachable and the cabinet is the wrong size regardless of bin count.

Decide what the door is for

Solid for security and cleanliness, wire mesh for security plus visibility and ventilation, clear acrylic for a full visual count from the aisle, sloped-shelf flow for picking speed behind a lock.

Split the contents between bins, shelves and drawers

Bins for loose hardware and fittings, adjustable interior shelves (up to 800 lb on selected 36″ models) for cans and cartons, door shelves (up to 60 lb) for light items, steel drawers for tooling and gauges.

Fix the bin sizes and count

This is where a complete package earns its keep — the cabinet arrives with the stated bin model and quantity already fitted, one color per unit. Three or four bin sizes in one cabinet is normal and usually cheaper than one size everywhere.

Settle the lock, the finish and the labels

Three-point locking handle with two keys as standard; the colossal sizes add a padlock provision (padlock not supplied). Gray or beige powder coat. Then moulded label holders and printed inserts so the scheme survives staff turnover.

Mistakes we see most often

Buying the biggest cabinet available. A 72" colossal cabinet in a 6-foot aisle cannot open. Two 36" cabinets often store the same inventory in a usable way.

Choosing a solid door by default. If the reason for the cabinet is theft, a mesh or clear door secures the contents just as well and keeps them countable.

Putting everything in bins. Aerosols, cartons, bottles and gauges do not belong in open bins. Specify a build with interior and door shelves and the cabinet stays tidy.

Ignoring the floor. These cabinets arrive assembled and weigh 300–1,000 lb empty. Confirm the delivery route, the door widths on the way in and the floor at the destination before the truck arrives.

What we need to quote

The space. Wall length, ceiling height, and the clear floor in front of the cabinet for the door swing.
The part mix. Roughly how many part numbers, and how big the largest item is that has to go inside.
The reason. Theft, dust, presentation or density — it changes the door and often the size.
The route. Dock, doorway widths, lift access and whether a fork truck is available at the destination.
Your standards. Existing bin brand, color scheme, keying or padlock standard, gray or beige.

Do bin cabinets come assembled?

Yes. Every cabinet in this range ships completely assembled and ready to use, with the bins in it and a three-point locking handle supplied with two keys. That is a genuine advantage over a knock-down cabinet, but it also means the crate is heavy — ship weights run from roughly 84 lb for the small clear tip-out cabinet to over 1,000 lb for a 72" colossal build. Check your delivery route and door widths before the truck is booked.

How wide does the cabinet need to be when the doors are open?

Much wider than the cabinet. A 60" wide colossal cabinet measures 115" wide with the doors fully open, and a 72" cabinet measures 139". If that clearance does not exist in front of the unit, the bins on the far edge of the doors cannot be reached and the cabinet is effectively the wrong size. This is the single most common sizing mistake we correct at quote stage.

What is the difference between a mesh door and a clear-acrylic door?

Both give you visibility with the cabinet locked, and both are stocked at 36"W x 18"D x 78"H with a louvered back wall carrying 18 to 36 bins. A wire mesh Safe-View door also ventilates the cabinet, which matters where damp rags, solvent-touched parts or freshly washed items would otherwise sit in a sealed steel box. A clear acrylic door gives a cleaner visual count and keeps dust out. Choose mesh when airflow matters, acrylic when dust does.

Can I lock a bin cabinet with our own padlock?

On the 60" and 72" colossal cabinets, yes — the three-point locking handle on those models includes a provision for a padlock, which is not supplied. The 36" and 48" cabinets use a three-point locking handle supplied with two keys. If your site runs a keyed-alike or combination standard, tell us at quote time and we will specify to it rather than guess. The clear tip-out cabinets come with a combination lock plus a master key for override.

What are interlocking drawer cabinets, and where do they fit?

They are modular polystyrene drawer units, all 11-3/8"D x 11-3/4"W x 11"H overall, that interlock horizontally and vertically so a small-parts drawer wall can grow one module at a time; pre-drilled rear holes also allow wall mounting. Drawers are removable, will not rust or corrode, and each has a recessed handle, a slotted label holder, a clear window and seven moulded divider slots. Nine pre-configured systems ship complete with drawers, clear windows and two dividers per drawer. They also go inside a 48" steel cabinet alongside 128 door bins when both densities are needed in one box.

Can I get bin cabinets in a color other than gray?

Yes. Cabinets are available in a gray or beige powder-coat finish across the 36", 48", 60" and 72" ranges, and the mesh and clear-view security cabinets are available in beige as well. Ordering beige is a model-number suffix rather than a special order. The bins themselves ship one color per unit in blue, yellow, red, green, ivory, black or clear, and additional bin colors can be quoted subject to an upcharge and a minimum run quantity.

Should I buy a bin cabinet or open bin shelving?

Open bin shelving is faster to pick from, cheaper per bin and easier to reconfigure, so it wins unless one of four things is true: parts are walking away, the environment is dirty, the shelving is visible to customers, or floor space is so tight that door-mounted bins are the only way to reach the required density.
