Wall-Mounted Security Cages: Space-Saving Storage Solutions
Secure inventory, tools, and parts without sacrificing valuable floor space.
What Are Wall-Mounted Security Cages?
Wall-mounted Security Cages attach directly to existing walls, using the building structure as one or more sides of the enclosure. This eliminates the need for full perimeter fencing and dramatically reduces both cost and floor space consumption.
Instead of a freestanding four-sided cage, you mount Wire Mesh Panel Options to the wall and add only the sides and door needed to complete the enclosure. A wall-mounted cage in a corner position only needs two panel sides plus a door — cutting panel costs by up to 50%.
Space Savings at a Glance:
- Freestanding cage requires 4–6″ clearance on all sides — wall-mounted needs zero clearance on wall sides
- Corner-mounted cages save up to 50% on panel costs
- Wall-mount eliminates posts on wall sides, saving an additional 10–15%
Mounting Configurations
1. Single-Wall Mount (L-Shape)
The most common configuration. Panels attach to one wall, with freestanding panels forming the remaining two sides and a door. Ideal for securing a section of wall shelving, IT equipment racks, or a maintenance parts area.
2. Corner Mount (Two-Wall)
Panels attach to two adjacent walls, requiring only one or two freestanding panel sections plus a door. This is the most cost-effective configuration and works well for Tool Cribs in shop corners.
3. Alcove Mount (Three-Wall)
When the area is recessed between three walls, you only need a front panel section with a Security Cage Doors. This is essentially a secured room created by adding a single cage wall. Common in server rooms and storage closets.
4. Ceiling-Suspended
For areas where floor anchoring isn’t possible (raised access floors, clean rooms), panels can be suspended from overhead structure. Combined with wall attachment, this creates a fully floating enclosure. Works well for Server & Data Center Cages environments with raised floor systems.
Wall Attachment Methods
| Wall Type | Attachment Method | Load Capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete/CMU block | Wedge anchors or tapcon screws | 500+ lbs per anchor |
| Steel columns/beams | Beam clamps or through-bolts | 1,000+ lbs per connection |
| Metal stud drywall | Through to studs with toggle bolts + backing plate | 200 lbs per stud |
| Wood stud | Lag screws into studs | 300 lbs per stud |
Important: The wall must be structurally adequate to support the cage panels. Our Security Cage Installation team assesses wall condition before specifying attachment methods.
Best Applications for Wall-Mounted Cages
IT and Network Equipment
Wall-mounted cages are perfect for securing network switches, patch panels, and small server deployments in spaces too small for a full Server & Data Center Cages cage. A 4′ x 8′ wall-mounted enclosure secures a full rack of equipment for under $2,000.
Tool and Parts Storage
Maintenance shops commonly mount cages along walls to secure expensive tooling, spare parts, and consumables. Combined with a Security Cage Service Windows, the cage doubles as a controlled-access parts counter.
Pharmaceutical and Cannabis
Wall-mounted cages with Security Cage Ceilings meet DEA and state cannabis security requirements while fitting into existing rooms. The wall attachment adds structural integrity required by DEA Drug Storage Cages and Cannabis Storage Cages regulations.
Evidence and Property Rooms
Police departments and sheriff’s offices often convert existing rooms into Law Enforcement Evidence Storage storage by adding wall-mounted cage sections. This creates segregated zones within a single room — intake, long-term, and high-value evidence areas.
Sizing and Specifications
Wall-mounted cages use the same panel systems as freestanding enclosures. Standard specifications include:
- Panel heights: 7′, 8′, and 10′ standard
- Panel widths: 1′ to 5′ in 1′ increments (custom available)
- Mesh types: Woven wire, welded wire, or expanded metal — see Wire Mesh Panel Options
- Finishes: Gray powder coat (standard), black, custom RAL colors
- Door options: Hinged or sliding, single or double — see Security Cage Doors
Use our Security Cage Sizing Guide to measure your space and determine the right configuration.
Cost Comparison: Wall-Mounted vs Freestanding
| Configuration | 10′ x 10′ Cage | Savings |
|---|---|---|
| Freestanding (4 sides) | $4,500 – $6,500 | — |
| Single wall mount (3 sides) | $3,200 – $4,800 | ~25% |
| Corner mount (2 sides) | $2,200 – $3,500 | ~45% |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can wall-mounted cages be removed later?
Yes. Wall-mounted cage systems are designed to be removable. Anchors can be pulled and holes patched. This makes them ideal for leased spaces where you may need to restore the wall at the end of your lease.
Do wall-mounted cages meet DEA requirements?
Yes, provided they include a ceiling, proper Security Cage Locks, and meet 21 CFR 1301.72 construction standards. The wall attachment actually adds structural strength, making it easier to meet DEA specifications. See our DEA Drug Storage Cages page for full compliance details.
What if my wall isn’t straight?
Minor wall irregularities (up to 1″) can be accommodated with shims and filler strips between the panel and wall. For significantly uneven walls, we use a standoff bracket system that creates a uniform attachment line. Our Custom Security Cages engineering team handles complex installations.
Can I add to a wall-mounted cage later?
Absolutely. The modular panel system allows you to extend a wall-mounted cage along the wall or add additional freestanding sections. This is one of the biggest advantages of the Wire Mesh Partitions system — easy future expansion.

How Wall-Mounted Cages Save Space & Money
Wall-mounted security cages use existing building walls as one, two, or three sides of the enclosure — dramatically reducing the number of wire mesh panels, posts, and hardware needed compared to freestanding designs. A three-wall mount (cage built into a corner) eliminates two full walls of panels, saving 30–50% on materials. Even a single-wall mount (cage against one wall) saves 20–30% compared to a four-sided freestanding cage.
Beyond material savings, wall-mounted cages use floor space more efficiently. They eliminate the aisle space that freestanding cages require on all sides — a freestanding cage needs 3’–4′ of clear space around its perimeter for access and fire code compliance. A wall-mounted cage in a corner needs aisle space on only one or two sides, reducing the total footprint by 30–40%.
Wall Attachment Methods
Wire mesh panels attach to building walls using wall brackets that anchor into concrete, CMU block, or wood-framed walls with appropriate fasteners. Concrete walls use wedge anchors or sleeve anchors rated for minimum 500 lbs pullout. CMU walls use through-bolts with backup plates. Wood-framed walls use lag screws into studs with steel mounting plates for load distribution.
The wall surface must be evaluated before design finalization. Drywall-only walls cannot support cage panels — structural backing (studs, blocking, or steel plate) must be present or added. Tilt-up concrete walls provide excellent attachment surfaces. Masonry walls require moisture evaluation — damp walls may indicate drainage issues that should be addressed before cage installation.
Best Applications for Wall-Mounted Cages
Wall-mounted configurations are ideal for building corners and alcoves (maximum wall utilization), warehouse perimeters where one or two walls are available, maintenance areas adjacent to exterior walls, loading dock areas where wall-mount creates a natural security perimeter, and small-footprint cages where freestanding posts would waste valuable floor space.
Limitations & Considerations
Wall-mounted cages have some limitations. They cannot be relocated without re-anchoring to new wall locations. Wall conditions may limit anchor pullout strength. Fire-rated walls may have restrictions on penetrations. Insulated exterior walls should not be compromised by anchor holes. Building management approval is typically required for wall modifications in leased spaces.
Hybrid Configurations
Hybrid designs combine wall-mounted sections with freestanding sections to optimize layout. A common hybrid uses two walls (corner mount) with two freestanding panel walls, creating a full enclosure with minimal structural modification. Another hybrid mounts panels to existing pallet rack uprights — see our pallet rack security enclosures page for details on rack-integrated designs.
