What is an evidence cage?
An evidence cage is a locked wire mesh enclosure inside an evidence or property room. It adds a second barrier around the items that need the most control — firearms, narcotics, cash, jewelry — so that even staff with access to the main room cannot reach them without a separate key, card or code. Every entry is one more step you can log for chain of custody.
Because the walls are mesh, evidence stays visible to supervisors and cameras, and the room’s lighting, HVAC and fire sprinklers keep working inside the cage. It is the same construction as a wire mesh security cage, laid out for property-room workflow.

Evidence cage configurations
Wire Crafters’ Style 840 system — the most common evidence enclosure we quote — can be laid out several ways, as published by the manufacturer:
- Room divider — mesh panels bolted between two existing walls to split one room into public and secure sides
- Corner cage — two mesh walls bolted together, using two building walls for the rest
- Self-contained enclosure — four mesh walls, with optional mesh ceiling, anywhere on the floor
- Issue window — a slide-up service window with a fixed counter for handing items in and out without opening the door
Panels come in one-foot increments from 1 ft to 10 ft wide and in 4 ft and 5 ft heights that stack to wall height, so the cage can be fit to rooms of any size.

Wire mesh evidence lockers
For smaller items or case-by-case separation, wire partition evidence lockers sit inside or alongside the cage. Wire Crafters lists lockers 3 ft x 3 ft x 7 ft 6 in. high that can be fitted with shelves and come with a padlock lug for your padlock. Multiple lockers share common side walls, and back and ceiling panels are added as needed.

Doors, hardware and access control
Hinged, double hinged, sliding and vertical rise doors are available; Wire Crafters’ sliding doors use a patented tamper-resistant latch. Standard doors have a built-in key lock, with digital keypads, card and proximity readers and biometric fingerprint readers available when you need an audit trail of who opened the cage and when.
- Assembly hardware is reached only from inside the cage; tamperproof hardware is available
- Heavy 10 gauge wire woven in a 2 in. x 1 in. rectangular mesh, welded inside a 1-3/4 in. x 1-3/4 in. x 1/8 in. steel angle frame
- Standard 3/8 in. mounting hardware; heavy-duty options available
- Panels can be ordered with any mesh, expanded metal, sheet metal or clear polycarbonate
