Choosing the Right Lock for Your Security Cage
The level of security your cage requires depends on what you’re protecting and who needs access. A simple padlock works fine for seasonal storage, while a DEA drug storage cage demands self-closing, self-locking doors with tamper-proof hardware. Data center cages typically need card-reader access with audit trails.
Material Handling USA provides the complete range of locking and access control hardware from WireCrafters and SpaceGuard Products — from basic padlock lugs to fully integrated electronic systems compatible with your existing building access controls.

Frequently Asked Questions — Security Cage Locks
Standard security cage doors come with a padlock lug. Cylinder locks are available as an upgrade and can be keyed alike, keyed different, or master keyed.
Yes. Options include electromagnetic locks (12/24V DC with battery backup), surface mount electric strikes, proximity card readers with tracking software, and ten-digit keypads. These integrate with most on-site access control systems.
An electromagnetic lock (mag lock) uses a magnetic field to secure the door. It’s 12 or 24V DC field-selectable with battery backup. Compatible with card readers, keypads, and remote release systems. Popular for data centers and evidence storage.
Yes. Push bar exits are available on universal hinged doors. Options include standard push bar, lever handle with push bar, and alarm push bars that sound a battery-powered alarm when opened.
A mechanical push-button lock that requires a programmed code for entry. No batteries or wiring needed. Paired with a thumb-turn knob or push bar on the inside. Ideal for areas needing keyless access without electronic infrastructure.
Yes. WireCrafters can prep doors for custom locks provided by others. Any 1″ mortise cylinder (5, 6, or 7 pin) can be used as an alternate to the standard cylinder.

Security Cage Lock Technology & Selection
Lock selection directly determines the security level and operational convenience of your cage system. The right lock prevents unauthorized access while allowing fast, easy entry for authorized personnel. The wrong lock creates security vulnerabilities, user frustration, and compliance failures. Understanding lock technologies, security ratings, and application requirements ensures you select the optimal solution for your specific cage.
Mechanical Lock Options
Cylinder locks (mortise and rim cylinders) are the most common mechanical lock for security cages. Available in ANSI Grade 1 (highest security), Grade 2 (standard commercial), and Grade 3 (light commercial) ratings. Grade 1 locks are required for DEA, evidence, and high-security applications — they withstand 800,000 cycles and resist drilling, picking, and bumping. Key-alike and master key systems allow facility-wide key management while maintaining individual cage security.
Padlock hasps provide the simplest lock solution — a steel staple welded to the door frame and post accepts any padlock. Best suited for general warehouse storage where convenience outweighs high-security needs. Heavy-duty padlocks with hardened steel shackles and restricted keyways upgrade padlock hasp security for higher-value applications. Combination padlocks eliminate key management but cannot provide access logging.
Electronic Access Control
Electronic locks provide the access logging, remote management, and flexible access scheduling that modern security requirements demand. Card readers (proximity, smart card, or mobile credential) provide fast, contactless access with a complete audit trail. Keypads offer code-based access without physical credentials — useful for high-turnover environments. Biometric readers (fingerprint, facial recognition) provide the highest identity assurance for compliance-driven installations.
Electronic lock systems integrate with building access control platforms for centralized user management. Add or revoke access instantly from a central console or mobile app. Schedule time-based access (e.g., cage accessible only during first shift, locked automatically at 6 PM). Receive alerts for unauthorized access attempts, door-held-open conditions, or forced entry alarms.
Multi-Point Locking Systems
Multi-point locks engage bolts at the top, bottom, and side of the door simultaneously. This distributes the locking force across the full door frame, making it extremely resistant to prying attacks. Multi-point locks are specified for DEA cages, evidence rooms, high-value inventory, and anywhere maximum physical security is required. They’re available with both mechanical (key) and electronic (access control) actuation.
Lock Compliance Requirements
Different applications have specific lock requirements. DEA 21 CFR 1301.72 requires a “commercial quality” lock — we specify ANSI Grade 1 cylinder locks or electronic access control to exceed this standard. Data center SOC 2 requires individually auditable access — electronic locks with user-specific credentials are mandatory. Evidence rooms may require dual-custody locks that need two different keys (held by different personnel) to open. Cannabis regulations vary by state but generally require commercial locks with access logging.
