Understanding Wire Mesh for Security Cages
The mesh you choose determines your cage’s security level, visibility, airflow, and cost. Smaller openings and heavier gauges provide more security but reduce air circulation. Material Handling USA helps you select the right combination from our manufacturing partners’ and our manufacturing partners’ full mesh catalog.
Standard Mesh
2″ x 1″ — 10 Gauge Woven (our manufacturing partners Standard) The industry standard. 10 gauge wire woven into a rectangular 2″x1″ pattern. 82.53% open air allows full HVAC, light, and fire suppression flow. Frame: 1-1/4″ x 1-1/4″ x 1/8″ angle. Mesh is securely welded to the frame with flat steel stiffeners

Wire Mesh Panel Specifications & Selection
Wire mesh panels are the building blocks of every security cage, partition, and enclosure. Understanding panel specifications — wire gauge, mesh opening size, panel dimensions, and finish options — enables you to select the right panels for your security requirements, budget, and environmental conditions. Material Handling USA stocks and sources pa
Wire Gauge & Security Levels
Wire gauge determines the strength and cut resistance of the panel. Lower gauge numbers indicate thicker, stronger wire. 10-gauge (0.135″ diameter) is the industry standard for commercial security cages — suitable for warehouses, tool cribs, tenant storage, and general security applications. 8-gauge (0.162″ diameter) provides heavy-duty
Mesh Opening Patterns
Mesh opening size affects security level, visibility, airflow, and cost. Standard 2″ × 2″ openings provide excellent visibility and airflow while preventing reach-through access to items inside the cage. 2″ × 1″ openings reduce reach-through capability for smaller items and increase panel rigidity. 1″ × 1″ openin
Woven vs. Welded Wire
Woven wire mesh is created by interlocking wires in an over-under pattern — similar to fabric weaving. This process creates a flexible, f or giving mesh that abs or bs impact without c racking welds. Woven wire is the industry standard and the most widely available. Welded wire mesh uses resistance welding at every wire intersection, creating a rigid pa
Panel Dimensions & Fill Panels
Standard panel widths: 1′, 2′, 3′, 4′, and 5′. Standard heights: 7′, 8′, 9′, 10′, 11′, and 12′. Panels can be combined in any configuration to create walls of virtually any length and height. Fill panels are custom-cut to exact widths for installations where standard sizes don’

Finish Options & Durability
Powder coating is the standard panel finish. A thermosetting resin is electrostatically applied and oven-cured, creating a hard, durable finish that resists chipping, scratching, and corrosion. Standard colors are gray (RAL 7042), black (RAL 9005), and safety yellow (RAL 1003). Custom colors are available for orders over 20 panels. Galvanized finis
