What is a wire mesh locker?

A wire mesh locker — often called a cage locker or wire storage locker — is a lockable compartment built from welded or woven wire mesh panels in a steel frame. Think of it as a row of small security cages, each with its own door, sized for one person, one technician or one tenant rather than a whole department.

The open mesh is the point. Building lighting, ventilation and fire sprinklers keep working through the lockers, managers can see at a glance what is stored, and nothing can hide in a dark corner. Solid steel employee lockers are the better choice for personal belongings in locker rooms; wire mesh lockers win for bulky storage, parts staging and large numbers of users.

Comparing a full cage with individual lockers? Our guide to wire cages vs security lockers walks through that decision. The products on this page come mainly from Wire Crafters, the Louisville, Kentucky wire partition manufacturer MH-USA represents as an authorized dealer.

Wire mesh storage lockers: walk-in and double-tier

Wire Crafters’ RapidWire storage lockers are all-steel welded units built for multifamily storage rooms, employee storage and any space where many people each need a locked section. As published by the manufacturer:

  • 10 ga wire in a 2 in. square welded mesh, welded into a 1-1/4 in. x 13 ga roll-formed angle frame
  • Single-tier walk-in lockers usually with a 3 ft or 4 ft wide door and 3, 4 or 5 ft depth, 7 ft 6 in. high
  • Double-tier lockers with the same width and depth, each unit about 3 ft 9 in. high
  • A padlock lug as standard, with a keyed three-point lock available
  • Pre-hung doors with welded hinges; four bolts join a wall panel to a door panel
  • Welded mesh that can be trimmed on site around conduit, pipes and columns

For apartments and condominiums specifically — unit counts, rental income, layout around mechanical rooms — see our tenant storage lockers page and the apartment and condo storage cage guide for property managers. Solid sheet metal backs or dividers can be added between units where neighbors should not see into each other’s space.

Technician locker systems for parts pickup

Technician lockers — also called mechanic or distribution lockers — solve a different problem. Parts staff load each compartment from inside a caged parts room. Drivers and field technicians open their own compartment from outside, often before the parts counter opens, and never enter the stockroom. Each person reaches only their own cell.

Wire Crafters lists a common configuration of four compartments high by four wide, each about 1 ft 8 in. high by 2 ft wide, with 16 ga galvanized shelves, mesh ceiling panels, 2 in. square 10 ga welded mesh, hinged doors and padlock hasps. Keypads, card readers and fingerprint readers can replace padlocks where you want a record of each pickup.

Who uses technician lockers

  • Distribution centers and wholesale branches with early-morning will-call pickups
  • Forklift and equipment dealers sending out field service techs
  • Cable, telecom and utility contractors issuing daily job materials
  • Plumbing, electrical and HVAC service companies
  • Auto and truck service centers staging parts by repair order

Locking choices are covered on our security cage locks and access control page, and a full staffed parts room is covered under tool cribs.

Wall-mounted garage storage lockers

Wall-mounted wire mesh storage lockers above parking spaces in a condominium garage

In apartment and condominium parking garages, the space above the hood of a parked car is usually wasted. Wall-mounted garage lockers hang there, leaving room to park while adding storage residents will rent or buy. Wire Crafters publishes a standard unit of 8 ft wide by 3 ft deep by 3 ft high in 2 in. square 10 ga welded mesh with a 16 ga galvanized solid base, mesh ceiling panels (which can be left off when the locker sits close to the garage ceiling) and hinged or sliding doors with a padlock lug.

Because every resident can see what is stored, building managers can spot fuel cans or other items the building does not allow. Installation uses standard hand tools, and each part is tagged to a layout drawing so crews know where every locker goes.

Military and duty gear lockers

TA-50 style gear lockers hold issued equipment for soldiers, guardsmen and first responders. Wire Crafters publishes a standard size of 24 in. deep by 42 in. wide by 78 in. high, with double hinged doors on a three-point lock that takes the user’s padlock, three coat hooks, a clothing rod and a 16 ga steel shelf above. Fronts and sides are 2 in. square 10 ga welded wire or flattened expanded metal, and options include helmet and inspection hatches, extra shelves and shared walls between units to reduce cost.

Prefer a fully enclosed steel gear locker? See our military TA-50 gear lockers page for the steel alternative.

Locks, assignment and access for locker rows

How lockers are locked and assigned matters as much as the lockers themselves, especially when tenants or staff turn over often:

Approach How it works Best for
User padlock on a lug Each user brings and controls their own padlock Tenant storage, employee storage, gear lockers
Three-point lock with padlock Rods lock top and bottom; the padlock secures the handle Taller doors and military gear lockers
Keyed cylinder The building issues and controls keys Rented units and lockers reassigned often
Keypad, card or fingerprint Electronic release with a log of each opening Technician lockers and after-hours pickup

Number every unit on the door and on the drawing, keep a simple register of who holds which locker, and plan for cut-lock procedures when a tenant leaves without returning a key. For technician pickup, matching locker numbers to work orders or routes in your parts system makes loading quick and reduces misplaced parts.

Planning a wire mesh locker project

Good locker layouts start with the users, not the room. A few questions shape every project:

  • How many people or units need a locker now, and in five years?
  • What will be stored — boxes and bikes, parts bins, uniforms and gear?
  • Walk-in, double-tier, small cells or a mix?
  • How will lockers be assigned and locked: user padlocks, keyed locks or electronic access?
  • Where are the sprinklers, lights, exits and mechanical equipment that must stay clear?
  • Do some units need solid backs or dividers for privacy?

Wire Mesh Locker FAQs

What is a cage locker?
A cage locker is a lockable storage unit made from wire mesh panels in a steel frame. It works like a small security cage for one person or tenant, and the open mesh keeps contents visible and lets light, air and sprinkler water through.
What sizes do wire mesh storage lockers come in?
Wire Crafters publishes walk-in units with 3 ft or 4 ft doors, 3, 4 or 5 ft deep and 7 ft 6 in. high, and double-tier units about 3 ft 9 in. high each. Technician lockers use small cells about 2 ft wide, and custom sizes are available.
Are wire mesh lockers secure?
They are built from 10 ga welded wire in steel frames with padlock lugs, three-point locks or keyed locks, which stops casual theft and keeps access controlled. For high-value or regulated storage, a full security cage with heavier mesh and access control may be the better fit.
What are technician or distribution lockers?
They are grids of small wire mesh compartments loaded from inside a caged parts room and opened from outside by drivers or technicians, so each person can pick up their parts without entering the stockroom.
Can wire mesh lockers be installed in a parking garage?
Yes. Wall-mounted garage lockers hang above the hood of a parked car, using space that is otherwise wasted.
Do wire mesh lockers interfere with fire sprinklers?
The open mesh lets sprinkler water pass through, which is one reason they are used in storage rooms. Mesh ceilings and solid panels can change that, so confirm the layout with your fire protection professional.
Wire mesh lockers or steel lockers for employees?
Steel lockers suit personal belongings and changing rooms. Wire mesh lockers suit bulky storage, parts pickup, gear storage and large numbers of tenants or users.
