What Is a TA-50 Locker?

“TA-50” is military shorthand for a soldier’s issued field gear. The name comes from the Army’s Common Table of Allowances 50-900 (CTA 50-900), the authorization document for clothing and individual equipment (OCIE): helmets, body armor, rucksacks, cold-weather layers, sleeping systems and the bags they ride in.

A TA-50 locker is the large, ventilated steel cabinet built to hold that kit for one person. The common size is 42″ wide, 24″ deep and 78″ high, with bi-parting double doors, a padlockable three-point latch, a full-width shelf, a coat rod and hooks. Perforated or mesh panels let damp gear dry and let supervisors see inside without opening every door.

Construction: What Makes a TA-50 Locker Heavy-Duty

Three-point latch and padlock

The right-hand door carries a turn handle that drives rods into the top and bottom of the frame and locks the left door at the center. On the Lyon TA-50 that is two 5/16″ steel rods and a center locking disc, with a chrome-plated handle that takes the user’s padlock. Dasco uses a three-point mechanism with an integrated padlock hasp.

Doors swing on full-height continuous hinges instead of a few knuckle hinges, so a loaded door does not sag. Built-in door stops are formed into the top and bottom.

Shelf, coat rod and hooks

A full-width steel shelf sits near the top for the helmet, boots or a packed assault pack. Lyon reinforces it with a center channel for a 200 lb rating. Below it, a 1″ galvanized coat rod rated at 100 lb holds field uniforms and vests on hangers, and four single-prong hooks take belts, bags and smaller items.

The open floor below holds rucksacks, duffels and boxes. The welded body has pre-punched holes so lockers can be bolted to each other, a wall or the floor.

All-welded vs. knock-downWelded TA-50s arrive assembled and stay square; there are no frame bolts to loosen. Lyon ships its TA-50 assembled except the handle. Bolt-together mesh TA-50s ship flat and suit tight access.
Perforated steel vs. meshDiamond-perforated steel (Lyon, Dasco) gives about 50% open area with smooth edges that do not snag straps. Welded wire or expanded metal is more open and lighter, and suits larger custom bays.

Types of TA-50 Lockers

Single-tier and two-tier TA-50 lockers

A single-tier TA-50 gives one person the full 78″ height: enough for a long coat, an armor carrier on a hanger and a rucksack on the floor. Dasco’s two-tier TA-50 fits two locking compartments, each about 37.5″ high, into the same footprint.

Two-tier units work for team gear, reserve units that drill on different weekends or keeping clean and dirty items apart. Each compartment takes its own padlock.

Configurable tactical readiness lockers

Planning a TA-50 Locker Room

Start with headcount. In Army readiness-center facility criteria (ERDC/CERL TR-11-37), the “green” standard for TA-50 storage is one 42″ × 24″ × 78″ locker per soldier assigned to the unit, with net floor area that grows with company size.

Plan aisles for doors open: each leaf of a 42″ bi-parting pair swings out about 21″. Back-to-back rows save wall space, and every locker should be ganged and anchored through its pre-punched holes. Leave a layout and inspection area nearby for gear checks and keep sprinkler and exit paths clear.
