What to Know Before You Buy Locker Room Benches

A locker room bench looks simple: a plank on two or three legs. But the bench you pick decides how long the room lasts, whether it passes an accessibility review and how comfortably people change at shift time. A bench that is too long for its pedestals sags, a bench that is not anchored tips, and a bench set too close to the lockers blocks the doors.

This guide covers the three common locker room bench builds — hardwood on steel pedestals, hardwood on aluminum pedestals and all-aluminum — plus ADA benches, sizes, pedestal spacing, aisle widths and real per-foot prices from our catalog. It is part of our employee lockers guide.

Types of Locker Room Benches

Most commercial locker room benches pair a top (hardwood, aluminum or plastic laminate) with pedestals (painted steel, anodized aluminum or cast iron). Choose the top for comfort and moisture, and the pedestal for the floor, the finish you want to match and whether the bench must move.

Hardwood on steel pedestalsThe standard school and workplace bench. Lyon uses a laminated hardwood top 9-1/2″ deep and 1-1/4″ thick with two coats of clear finish, on 14-gauge steel pedestals powder coated putty or dove gray to match Lyon lockers. Rated 150 lb per linear foot.
Hardwood on aluminum pedestalsThe same hardwood top on anodized aluminum pedestals made from two formed pieces welded together. Aluminum does not rust, so these suit rooms near showers where steel legs could chip and corrode. Also 150 lb per linear foot.
All-aluminum benchesAnodized aluminum planks with softly rounded edges and center traces for skid-resistant seating, on aluminum pedestals. Lighter, rust-free and easy to wipe down; rated 120 lb per linear foot. Add rubber feet to make one portable.
Plastic laminate topsLyon also offers a 12″ deep, 1-5/8″ laminate top over a particle board core for steel, cast iron or trapezoid pedestals. Keep laminate out of wet areas; we quote these per project.
ADA benchesDeep 48″ × 24″ hardwood benches on four steel pedestals, with or without a backrest, built for the accessible bench that 2010 ADA section 803 requires in accessible locker rooms.
Bench tops and pedestals sold separatelyReplacing a worn top or building a custom length? Lyon wood bench tops (36–120″) and steel or aluminum pedestal packs are listed on their own, so you can reuse sound legs.

Locker Room Bench Sizes and Dimensions

Standard locker room benches are narrow on purpose: a 9-1/2″ deep seat leaves aisle room in front of the lockers while still giving a solid place to sit and lace boots. Seat height on a standard Lyon hardwood bench on steel pedestals is about 18″ (a 16-1/2″ pedestal plus the 1-1/4″ top). Length is where you have choices.

Dimension Standard bench (Lyon) ADA bench (Lyon) Tennsco maple bench

Lyon dimensions from the Lyon locker bench specifications and sell sheet; Tennsco from Tennsco locker accessory and LBP-1 pedestal specifications. Exact seat height depends on top and pedestal; we confirm it on your quote.

  • Match length to the locker run. A bench usually runs most of the length of the bank it serves, stopping short of corners, door swings and the clear floor space at accessible lockers.
  • Respect pedestal spacing. Lyon specifies steel pedestals on centers of not more than 6 feet; that is why 9 and 10 ft benches ship with three pedestals.
  • Long rooms: use several benches. Two 8 ft benches with a gap are easier to move around and to replace than one 16 ft run, and the gap gives a path to the lockers behind.
  • Island or wall? A bench against a wall can be 9-1/2″ deep; a freestanding island bench in a wide room can be used from both sides, so plan aisle space on both sides.

Locker Bench Legs and Pedestals

Three Lyon putty steel locker bench pedestals with round top and base plates

Steel pedestals are the most common locker bench legs. Lyon’s are 14-gauge steel with 1-5/8″ tubing uprights and 8-1/4″ round plates top and bottom, 16-1/2″ tall, powder coated in the same putty or dove gray as Lyon lockers. The plates are pre-drilled to screw to the bench top and anchor to the floor. Lyon sells them in 2-packs and in 3-packs for tops 9 feet or longer.

Tennsco’s LBP-1 pedestal is heavier: 11-gauge plates and an 11-gauge, 2-3/8″ tube, 17-3/4″ overall, enameled to match Tennsco lockers. Lyon also offers single-piece cast iron pedestals for heavy-abuse rooms.

Aluminum pedestals are anodized and naturally weather resistant, so they will not rust where floors are mopped daily or near showers and pools. Lyon builds each from two formed aluminum pieces welded together, for bench tops from 3 to 8 feet, with hardware to attach to a hardwood or aluminum top.

Movable or fixed? Bolt-on rubber feet add about 1 inch of height and turn an aluminum-pedestal bench into a portable bench — useful in multi-use rooms. For a fixed bench, Lyon’s concrete wedge anchors fasten aluminum pedestals to the slab. Lyon’s trapezoid aluminum pedestal is another movable option; Lyon limits bench overhang past its center to 6 inches.

Replacing locker bench legs only? If the hardwood top is sound, new pedestals bring an old bench back. Measure the existing top length (2 pedestals up to 8 ft, 3 beyond), check whether the old legs were steel or aluminum, and match the finish to the lockers. Lyon aluminum pedestals come in 2- and 3-packs, steel pedestals in putty or dove gray.

Never mix a heavy steel pedestal at one end with a light aluminum one at the other, and re-anchor every new pedestal — old anchor holes are often stripped.

ADA Locker Room Bench Requirements

Under the 2010 ADA Standards, each locker room that must be accessible needs at least one bench that complies with section 903 (section 803.4). A standard 9-1/2″ bench does not qualify — it is too shallow. Here is what section 903 asks for, in plain terms:

Requirement 2010 ADA Standards Section
Seat size 42″ long minimum, 20″ to 24″ deep 903.3
Seat height Top of seat 17″ to 19″ above the finished floor 903.5
Back support Bench has a backrest or is fixed to a wall; backrest 42″ long min, from 2″ max to 18″ min above the seat 903.4
Strength Withstands 250 lb applied vertically or horizontally at any point 903.6
Clear floor space 30″ × 48″ at the end of the bench, parallel to its short side, for side transfer 903.2 / 305.3
Wet locations Slip-resistant seat that does not hold water 903.7

Wall bench or backrest? An ADA bench set tight against a wall uses the wall as back support. A freestanding bench in the middle of the room needs its own backrest. Lyon makes its 48″ × 24″ ADA bench both ways: without a back for wall placement, and with a hardwood backrest for open floor.

Lyon states its ADA benches meet the accessibility requirements of sections 222 and 803 of the 2010 ADA Standards. Both use a hardwood top with clear finish on 14-gauge steel pedestals and are rated 150 lb per linear foot. Local codes can add requirements, so confirm with your architect or plan reviewer.

Keep the transfer space clear. The 30″ × 48″ clear floor space at the end of the bench is where a wheelchair user pulls up alongside to slide across. It cannot be taken by a locker door swing, a trash can or another bench.

Place the ADA bench near the accessible lockers on the accessible route. Our ADA lockers guide covers the 5 percent locker rule and reach ranges, and our locker room design service draws the whole room, including the ADA bench, to scale.

ADA requirements summarized from the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, sections 803.4, 903 and 305.3 (U.S. Access Board). This is a summary, not legal advice.

How to Place Benches in a Locker Room

Leave a real aisle. People stand at an open locker door while someone else sits on the bench behind them. Keep the accessible route through the room at least 36″ wide — measured with locker doors open where they swing into the aisle — and add more where shifts change all at once.

Count seats at peak. Changing-room planners commonly allow about 18 to 24 inches of bench per person changing at the same time (less for children, more where people bring bags and coats). Thirty workers changing together need roughly 45 to 60 feet of bench. In workplaces with full-height lockers, not everyone sits, so many rooms plan for most rather than all of the peak crowd.

Tape outlines of locker footprints and a center bench on a warehouse floor during a shift-change walk test

Test the layout first. Tape the locker footprints, door swings and bench outline on the floor and walk a shift change through it. It shows quickly whether the bench blocks doors or leaves the ADA transfer space too tight.

Wall run or island. Narrow rooms get one bench facing the lockers. Wide rooms can take a freestanding island bench between two locker banks, used from both sides. Leave a break in long benches so people can cross the room.

Locker Room Bench Cost per Linear Foot

Longer benches cost less per foot because the pedestals are shared across more seat. These are current online prices for Lyon benches in our store (October 2026); freight and installation are extra and prices can change.

Lyon bench Length Online price Approx. per linear foot
Hardwood on steel pedestals 48″ $257.72 $64
Hardwood on steel pedestals 96″ $414.54 $52
Hardwood on steel pedestals (3 pedestals) 120″ $548.80 $55
Hardwood on aluminum pedestals 48″ $329.21 $82
Hardwood on aluminum pedestals 96″ $507.70 $63
All-aluminum 72″ $261.14 $44
All-aluminum 120″ $408.60 $41
ADA bench, no back 48″ × 24″ $625.85 —
ADA bench with back 48″ × 24″ $1,382.94 —

Rough budget: a typical run of standard benches lands around $40 to $85 per linear foot before freight, plus one ADA bench per accessible room. Bench tops (from $152.33 for 36″) and pedestal packs (steel 2-pack $92.64) are sold separately for repairs. We quote benches together with lockers, so freight is shared.

Installing and Anchoring Locker Room Benches

Lyon ships the top and pedestals separately with assembly hardware and anchor bolts, and strongly recommends fastening the bench to the floor. Tennsco says its benches must be secured to the floor. A loose bench gets dragged into aisles, rocks on uneven slabs and can tip when someone sits on the end.

  • Screw the pedestals to the underside of the top (Tennsco’s instructions mark holes 6″ from each end).
  • Set the bench, check the aisle and ADA clear space, then mark anchor holes through the base plates.
  • Use anchors suited to the floor — concrete wedge anchors on slab; follow local code.
  • In wet areas, pick aluminum pedestals and a seat that sheds water.

Our crews can assemble and anchor benches when they install the lockers. Lockers themselves should be anchored too — see our heavy-duty lockers and box lockers guides for anchoring notes.

Locker Room Bench FAQs

How deep is a standard locker room bench?
Most standard locker room benches are 9-1/2 inches deep. Lyon and Tennsco hardwood tops are 9-1/2 inches deep and 1-1/4 inches thick; Lyon laminate tops are 12 inches deep. ADA benches are 20 to 24 inches deep.
How tall is a locker room bench?
A standard Lyon hardwood bench on steel pedestals is about 18 inches high. For an ADA bench, the top of the seat must be 17 to 19 inches above the finished floor.
How many pedestals does a locker room bench need?
Lyon bench tops from 3 to 8 feet use two pedestals, and 9 and 10 foot tops use three. Lyon specifies steel pedestals on centers of not more than 6 feet.
What makes a locker room bench ADA compliant?
Under 2010 ADA section 903 the seat must be at least 42 inches long and 20 to 24 inches deep, 17 to 19 inches high, have back support or be fixed to a wall, carry 250 pounds at any point and have a 30 by 48 inch clear floor space at one end.
Does every locker room need an ADA bench?
Each locker room required to be accessible under the 2010 ADA Standards must include a bench that complies with section 903 (section 803.4). Check local codes with your architect.
Are aluminum or hardwood locker room benches better?
Hardwood on steel pedestals is the standard for dry rooms and matches painted lockers. Aluminum pedestals or all-aluminum benches suit damp rooms because anodized aluminum does not rust. Lyon rates hardwood benches at 150 lb per linear foot and all-aluminum at 120 lb.
How much space should be between a bench and the lockers?
Keep the accessible route at least 36 inches wide, measured with locker doors open where they swing into the aisle, and add more where many people change at once.
How much do locker room benches cost per foot?
In our store, standard Lyon benches work out to roughly $40 to $85 per linear foot before freight, depending on length and material. ADA benches are priced per bench.
Should locker room benches be anchored to the floor?
Yes. Lyon strongly recommends anchoring and includes anchor bolts, and Tennsco states its benches must be secured to the floor. Rubber feet are only for benches meant to be portable.
