An exhaust snorkel is an articulated extraction arm that pulls fumes, smoke, dust or solvent vapor away from a specific work point — a lab bench, a soldering station, a small parts-cleaning setup — and routes it into building ductwork. Material Handling USA supplies the Nederman FX2 BenchTop Extraction Arm line, a globally established design used across laboratories, electronics assembly and light industrial facilities.

Nederman describes itself as a global leader in industrial air filtration, and the FX2 is its flexible, lightweight arm platform: anodized aluminum tube sections joined by two or three adjustable composite friction joints, with the two outermost joints able to rotate and swivel through a full 360° for maneuverability at the bench.

The arms are sold in three diameters (2″, 3″ and 4″) and three material variants (Original, ESD/EX and CHEM) so the arm can be matched to both the airflow you need and the environment the fumes are coming from.

FX2 Models & Material Variants

Every FX2 arm is available in three diameters. Choosing Original, ESD/EX or CHEM depends on what is moving through the arm, not on how much air you need to move — airflow is set by diameter, not by material variant.

A Note on Airflow

Airflow (CFM) is a range, not a fixed number — the arm performs across that range depending on static pressure from your ductwork, damper position and fan selection. Fan and ductwork sizing is normally handled by your HVAC contractor using the arm manufacturer’s pressure-drop data.

Arm Lengths & Working Radius

Arm length is tied to diameter. The 2″ and 3″ arms share one set of lengths; the 4″ arm uses a separate, longer set built for its larger joints and tube diameter.

The same arm can be mounted four different ways depending on the room. Cut2fit extension profiles let any of these mounts reach a higher ceiling or a taller drop-ceiling void without changing the arm itself.

Ceiling Mount

The arm drops down through ceiling tiles on a Cut2fit extension profile with a matching ceiling cover plate for a clean finish — the most common mount where overhead clearance allows it.

Wall Mount

A wall bracket kit holds the arm base flush or on a flat wall bracket where ceiling mounting is not feasible or where the arm needs to sit at a fixed working height.

Bench / Table Edge Mount

A bench bracket kit clamps the arm base directly to the edge of a workbench or table for point-of-use extraction close to the task.

Floor / Classic Mount

The classic bracket, used with the Cut2fit extension profile, mounts the arm on the floor, on top of a cabinet, or on any horizontal surface away from the ceiling or wall.

Hoods & Nozzle Styles

The capture hood determines how the arm gathers fumes at the work point, and it is independent of arm diameter or material variant — the same minihood connection accepts several hood styles:

  • Combi hood — a general-purpose funnel hood for most bench applications.
  • Dome hood — wider capture area for high-dispersion or aggressive contaminants; the CHEM version is corrosion-resistant PE plastic.
  • Metal hood — durable metal construction for harsher physical environments.
  • Flange hood — a flat flange design that maximizes capture without an oversized hood body.

Ducting from the arm to building ductwork uses a flexible hose over a duct connector sized to the arm diameter, with a hose support ring to keep the connection secure.

Exhaust Snorkel FAQs

What diameters do exhaust snorkel arms come in?
The FX2 line comes in 2″, 3″ and 4″ diameters (Nederman calls these the 50, 75 and 100 models). Airflow scales with diameter: roughly 30-65 CFM at 2″, 65-150 CFM at 3″, and 110-265 CFM at 4″.
What are the standard arm lengths?
The 2″ and 3″ diameter arms are available in 700 mm (≈27.5″), 1100 mm (≈43.3″) and 1500 mm (≈59″) working-radius versions. The 4″ diameter arm is available in 1200 mm (≈47.2″), 1800 mm (≈70.9″) and 2400 mm (≈94.5″) versions.
What is the difference between Original, ESD/EX and CHEM arms?
Original arms use standard PP plastic joints and an EPDM duct connector for general fume and dust capture. ESD/EX arms use conductive PP joints and a conductive EPDM connector to dissipate static charge, for static-sensitive or explosion-risk extraction points. CHEM arms add a white electrophoretic coating over the anodized aluminum tubing for corrosion resistance against aggressive chemical fumes.
What mounting options are available?
Ceiling, wall, floor and bench/table-edge mounting kits are all available, along with Cut2fit extension profiles for tall ceilings or drop-ceiling configurations and a ceiling cover plate to finish the opening.
What hood or nozzle styles can I use?
Combi hoods, dome hoods, metal hoods and flange hoods are all interchangeable on the same minihood connection, regardless of arm diameter, so the capture opening can be matched to the application without changing the arm.
Do exhaust snorkels include the blower, fan, ductwork or HVAC work?
No. The snorkel arm and hood are the capture-point hardware. Blowers, fans, dampers, ducting and any building HVAC tie-in are designed and installed separately, typically by an HVAC contractor. We can help you size and lay out the arms as part of a lab design project, but the mechanical system itself is engineered by others.
What is the maximum fume temperature the arms can handle?
70°C (158°F) across the Original, ESD/EX and CHEM lines. Applications with hotter fume sources need a different duct/hood approach upstream of the arm.
Can the arm rotate to reach different positions on a bench?
Yes. The two outermost joints on every FX2 arm rotate and swivel through 360°, so a single arm can be positioned over multiple nearby work points without relocating the mount.
