A walk-in fume hood — Labconco’s term is a floor-mounted laboratory hood — stands on the floor instead of on a bench, so its interior opens from floor level up to a header roughly 73″ high. That full-height opening is the whole point: carts, 55-gallon drums, tall distillation columns and extraction rigs roll straight in, which a benchtop hood simply cannot accommodate.

“Walk-in” describes the access, not the way it is used — the equipment walks in, not the operator. Material Handling USA supplies two Labconco floor-mounted families: the Protector XL, a traditional ducted hood in widths from 4′ to 16′, and the Protector Echo Floor-Mounted, a filtered, ductless hood for labs where running exhaust duct is impractical.

Both are built for real chemistry: chemical-resistant liners, tempered safety-glass sashes, pre-wired vapor-proof LED lighting and engineered airflow. The right choice comes down to your chemicals, the tallest thing you need to fit, and whether you can duct to a fan and stack.

The honest rule of thumb

Ducted hoods handle the widest range of chemistry and the highest volumes, but they need exhaust infrastructure and pull conditioned air out of the building. Filtered hoods free you from ductwork and recover conditioned air, but they depend on the right filter for your chemical list — which is why Labconco requires a Chemical Assessment before a filtered hood is specified. Labconco Protector XL Floor-Mounted (Walk-In) Hoods

The Protector XL is Labconco’s ducted floor-mounted hood, built to accommodate procedures that need oversized equipment or maximum working height. It uses a by-pass airflow design with removable Opti-Zone baffles (flame spread under 25 per ASTM E84), a chemical-resistant molded composite liner, and a Glacier white powder-coated steel exterior.

Horizontal-sliding sash models

Offered in 8′, 10′, 12′ and 16′ widths, these use four tempered safety-glass horizontal-sliding sashes and give a 73.5″ (187 cm) loading height — ideal for tall distillation racks, extraction apparatus and large drums where you want a big opening without raising a heavy vertical sash.

Vertical-rising sash models

Offered in 4′, 5′, 6′ and 8′ widths, the vertical-rising models meet the SEFA-1 standard for a low-velocity, high-performance hood and may be operated as low as 60 fpm face velocity. Lower face velocity means lower exhaust CFM and less conditioned air pulled from the room, which cuts operating cost when the hood is used within its listed conditions. Vertical models provide a 63.6″ (162 cm) loading height.

Both sash styles include Clean-Sweep airflow openings in the sash handles and are factory-prepared for up to eight service fixtures, four duplex receptacles and an airflow monitor, with pre-wired vapor-proof LED lighting rated to 50,000 hours.

Protector XL exhaust requirements by model

Exhaust volume and static-pressure loss from Labconco’s user’s manual, shown at 80 and 100 fpm face velocity. The hood connects to a 12″ nominal (12.75″ OD) duct through 12.8″ ID exhaust connection(s). Use these as planning figures and confirm the final design with your mechanical engineer.

Labconco Protector Echo Floor-Mounted Filtered Hoods

The Protector Echo Floor-Mounted is Labconco’s ductless, filtered floor-mounted hood — the answer when you need the interior height of a walk-in hood but cannot run exhaust ductwork. Built-in exhaust fans draw air through the filters and return it to the room, maintaining a 60 fpm face velocity at a 16″ sash opening.

It is offered in 4′, 5′, 6′ and 8′ widths with three exterior depths (37.7″, 43.7″ and 55.7″) and a fiberglass-reinforced composite liner. The single-piece tempered-glass sash stops at 16″ for normal work, opens to 26″ to load chemicals, and the lower sash rises from the floor to 55.2″ so carts, drums and tall apparatus roll straight in.

eGuard smart monitoring

The Echo’s eGuard2 smart-control module connects over wifi, Bluetooth or ethernet and reports filter saturation, sash position, temperature, laboratory air quality and usage authorization to a phone or computer — so a lab manager can see the state of a hood without standing in front of it.

A sensor package watches for solvent and acid filter breakthrough and drives audible/visual alarms for breakthrough, temperature at or above 40 °C (104 °F), fan failure and a high sash. As a safety backstop, if the internal temperature reaches 60 °C (140 °F) all fans stop. Operating sound stays under 60 dB(A) at working height and under 48 dB(A) with the sash closed.

Neutrodine Filtration Options (Protector Echo)

The heart of the Echo is Neutrodine Unisorb filtration — a single molecular carbon filter type (Erlab GFH technology) engineered to adsorb most acids, bases and solvents, separately or combined. A single comprehensive filter takes much of the guesswork out of filter selection compared with juggling application-specific carbons.

Four configurations cover the common cases. Filters are sold separately, and Labconco recommends a Chemical Assessment — a review of your chemical list and usage — to confirm a filtered hood is appropriate and to select the filter. We help you run that assessment with Labconco before anything is ordered.

A ductless hood is only as safe as the match between your chemistry and the filter. High evaporation rates, unknown mixtures, or chemicals outside the filter’s range may call for a ducted Protector XL instead. We never talk anyone into a filtered hood to save on ductwork — the Chemical Assessment decides.

Airflow you can trust, sashes sized for the job

Containment comes from airflow, not glass. The XL’s by-pass design and removable Opti-Zone baffles keep face velocity stable as the sash moves, while the Clean-Sweep openings sweep the work surface. On the Echo, built-in fans hold 60 fpm at the 16″ operating height and the sensor package flags any drift before it becomes a problem.

Because both hoods are floor-mounted, the sash and opening are sized around equipment, not around a bench — so the hood works the way your process actually runs.

Are floor-mounted fume hoods shipped assembled?
No. Both the Protector XL and the floor-mounted Echo ship partially unassembled — typically on two to three pallets — and require field assembly of the lower and upper sections, corner posts, baffles, header and sashes, plus connection of services. Labconco does not perform the field assembly; our team helps coordinate placement, assembly and the exhaust or power connections.
Which filtration option do I need for formaldehyde?
For formalin/formaldehyde work — common in histology, pathology and anatomy — specify the Protector Echo carbon filter with the formaldehyde breakthrough sensor. A Labconco specialist confirms the selection against your specific chemicals and usage as part of the Chemical Assessment.
