About the project
Jordan School District needed to consolidate storage at its Auxiliary Services Building in West Jordan, Utah, reusing shelving the district already owned rather than purchasing an entirely new system.
Material Handling USA tore down and relocated the district’s existing shelving, then completed the mobile shelving layout to match the room’s drawing, installed on a twin ramp so no sub-floor was needed. The project was quoted on the State of Utah cooperative contract, with delivery and installation running about four to six weeks.
Project scope at a glance
The situation
A school district’s auxiliary services building typically supports functions like warehousing, distribution and maintenance for schools across the district, and storage needs shift as buildings are added, renovated or consolidated. Shelving that served one room well can become the right fit for a different room, but only if it is torn down, moved and reinstalled correctly.
Rather than sending working shelving to salvage and buying new, Jordan School District chose to relocate what it already owned into a mobile shelving layout for the Auxiliary Services Building, getting the density benefit of a mobile system without discarding usable equipment.

What Material Handling USA supplied
Material Handling USA tore down the district’s existing shelving, relocated it to the Auxiliary Services Building, and completed the mobile shelving system to match the room’s layout drawing. The system was installed on a twin ramp rather than a sub-floor, so the room stayed at grade for the warehouse’s cart and pallet traffic.
The project was quoted and purchased on the State of Utah cooperative contract, which most Utah school districts use to buy equipment without a separate bid process.
System layout
The layout drawing below shows the system as installed: a run of mobile shelving carriages combined with static shelving on floor rail, sized to the Auxiliary Services Building’s storage room. Dimensions and the exact aisle count are specific to this room and are shown for illustration of how a mobile shelving system is planned before it is built.

What the district gained
Reusing shelving vs. buying new
| Buying all-new shelving | Relocating and completing existing shelving | |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Full system cost | Reduced by the value of shelving already owned |
| Lead time | Full manufacturing lead time | Limited mainly to completion sections |
| Best fit | Rooms with no usable existing equipment | Rooms consolidating from another building or space, as with this project |
| Result | A single generation of equipment | A mixed system, matched to read and operate as one |
| Sustainability | Retires working equipment | Keeps working equipment in service |
