The situation

Pixar Place Hotel sits inside the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, across the walkway from Disney California Adventure Park. The 15-story hotel reopened in January 2024 as a full renovation of the former Paradise Pier Hotel and now carries 479 guest rooms plus themed suites, a rooftop pool deck and a concierge lounge.

A hotel that size runs on a back-of-house storeroom that most guests never see. Housekeeping needs a steady, organized supply of linens, towels, amenities and cleaning products moving in and out every day of the year, and a resort property near two theme parks does not get slow seasons to catch up on organization. The hotel’s operations team needed more usable storage capacity inside an existing back-of-house footprint, without expanding the room or taking space away from other functions.

The solution

MH-USA worked with the Pixar Place Hotel team to design a high-density mobile shelving system for the housekeeping storeroom. Instead of shelving units bolted to the floor with a fixed aisle next to each one, the shelving units sit on wheeled carriages that ride on floor-mounted steel rails. Only one aisle needs to be open at a time, and staff open it wherever they need it by turning a mechanical handle or, on assisted systems, pressing a control.

Because only one aisle is open instead of one aisle per row, the same footprint holds roughly double the shelving of a static layout, or the same shelving fits in about half the floor space. For a hotel storeroom serving a 479-room property, that difference turns a cramped, overflow-prone space into organized capacity with room to grow.

The system was configured with adjustable steel shelving to handle a mix of load types in one room: folded linens and towels on open shelving, boxed amenities and paper goods on standard shelves, and bottled cleaning supplies kept separated from soft goods. Aisle end panels and shelf labeling were included so housekeeping staff could locate specific items quickly during a turnover.

Why mobile shelving over static shelving or added storage space

Static shelving was the lower-cost option on paper, but it would have required either giving up more back-of-house floor area or accepting less storage capacity than housekeeping needed. Neither option was attractive inside an operating resort hotel where back-of-house square footage next to guest areas is limited and expensive to add.

Mobile shelving solved the actual constraint, which was capacity within a fixed footprint, rather than the symptom of a cluttered room. It also let the hotel standardize how supplies are organized, since every carriage and shelf level can be labeled and assigned to a category, which matters when a large housekeeping staff needs to find items quickly during high-occupancy periods around the parks.
