Guided From Above: How Top-Track Works

Metro Top-Track hangs shelving units from an overhead aluminum rail instead of running rail
across the floor. Posts and casters attach to the ceiling-mounted track, so the floor underneath
stays completely clear — no floor plates, no trip hazard, no floor prep to level a rail run.
Units slide side to side along the track and park closed, and a single working aisle opens
wherever access is needed.

Because nothing sits on the floor, Top-Track is the drive of choice when a room has an uneven
slab, existing floor-mounted equipment, or a finish (tile, epoxy, raised flooring) the project
does not want to cut into. It mounts to structural ceiling framing, so overhead clearance and
structural capacity are confirmed before layout, not after order.

Material Handling USA is an authorized Metro dealer, and specifies and installs Top-Track
systems using Metro’s own shelving lines — Super Erecta wire and MetroMax polymer —
on the overhead rail hardware shown throughout this page.

Capacity & Sizing

Top-Track is Metro’s medium-duty overhead system. Published specifications:

Spec Top-Track
Mount Overhead aluminum rail (ceiling-mounted)
Weight capacity Up to 900 lb (408 kg) per unit
Configuration Single-deep or double-deep
Storage capacity gain Up to 50% more storage than static shelving in the same footprint, per Metro
Floor impact None — no floor-mounted rail or plates

If a room needs a higher per-unit weight capacity (up to 2,000 lb) and can accept
floor-mounted rail, see Metro qwikTRAK instead, compared in full below.

Shelf & Finish Options

Top-Track units are built with Metro’s own shelving lines, chosen by load, environment and
finish need:

  • Super Erecta — Metro’s original wire shelving, offered in Brite, chrome,
Metroseal 3 and type 304 stainless finishes.
  • Super Adjustable Super Erecta — tool-free post adjustment on the same wire
    shelf platform.
  • Super Erecta Pro — solid-grid polymer shelf surface on the same post system.
  • MetroMax i / MetroMax Q — polymer matrix shelving with corrosion-resistant
posts, built for wash-down and wet environments.

Metro offers Microban antimicrobial product protection on select Metroseal-finish posts and
shelves; we note this as a manufacturer feature, not a certification or health claim, and any
project requiring a specific listing (NSF, for example) should be confirmed model-by-model in
writing before order.

Complete Kits & End Units

Metro Top-Track Overhead Track Shelving Stationary End Unit Kits for MetroMax Polymer Shelving

Metro publishes Top-Track as complete kits sized to common space lengths (10, 12 and 14 ft
runs shown in our shop below), plus individual stationary end-unit and mobile-unit kits for
projects that need a custom range length or are extending an existing bank. A kit specifies
post finish, shelf type, shelf width and the number of mobile vs. stationary units — we
confirm the room dimensions and target capacity before quoting a specific kit number.

Planning Decisions Before You Buy

📏

Overhead Clearance

Confirm ceiling height and any obstructions (ductwork, sprinklers, lighting) along the full track run.

🏗️

Structural Capacity

Track mounts to structural ceiling framing — loaded weight is checked against the building’s structural rating.

📊

Load Per Unit

Up to 900 lb per unit; heavier loads may point to qwikTRAK’s floor-mounted system instead.

🚪

Single vs. Double-Deep

Double-deep runs increase density further but need a wider clear aisle to service the back row.

🧱

Shelf Material

Wire (Super Erecta) for general storage, polymer (MetroMax) for wash-down or wet-environment rooms.

🧰

Existing Floor Finish

Because nothing mounts to the floor, Top-Track suits rooms where floor prep or floor cuts aren’t an option.

Top-Track vs. qwikTRAK: Which Metro System Fits?

Metro builds two track-mounted mobile shelving systems, and the difference is where the rail
lives:

  Top-Track qwikTRAK
Rail location Overhead (ceiling-mounted) Floor-mounted
Weight capacity Up to 900 lb per unit Up to 2,000 lb per unit
Floor impact None Rail sits on/in the floor
Best fit Uneven or finished floors, no floor prep wanted Higher loads, flat floor available

Metro Top-Track FAQ

What is the difference between Metro Top-Track and qwikTRAK?
Top-Track mounts to an overhead rail and keeps the floor completely clear; qwikTRAK mounts to a floor-mounted rail and carries a higher per-unit weight capacity (up to 2,000 lb vs. 900 lb). See our Metro qwikTRAK page for the floor-track option.
How much weight can a Metro Top-Track unit hold?
Up to 900 lb (408 kg) per unit, in single-deep or double-deep configurations.
Does Top-Track require floor work to install?
No — because the rail is overhead, there is no floor-mounted track or plate to install. Ceiling structure and clearance are what get confirmed before layout instead.
What shelving can be mounted on Top-Track?
Metro’s Super Erecta and Super Adjustable Super Erecta wire shelving, Super Erecta Pro solid-grid shelving, and MetroMax i / MetroMax Q polymer matrix shelving, in Brite, chrome, Metroseal 3 and type 304 stainless finishes depending on the line.
Is Metro Top-Track NSF certified?
Certifications are model- and finish-specific; we confirm any required listing in writing for the exact kit before order rather than make a blanket certification claim here.
Can Top-Track be sized to a specific room?
Yes — complete kits are published for common space lengths, and stationary end-unit or mobile-unit kits can be combined to fit a custom range length or extend an existing bank.
