Fleet supplies and parts storage for autos and trucks
About the project
Herriman City needed a compact, organized way to store auto and truck parts for its municipal fleet, without dedicating a large room to static shelving aisles.
Material Handling USA supplied a mechanical mobile shelving system built to seven shelf levels with two dividers per shelf, quoted on the State of Utah cooperative contract and installed on a twin ramp so no sub-floor was needed. Delivery and installation ran about four to six weeks.
Project scope at a glance
The situation
A municipal fleet parts room stores a wide range of item sizes, from small filters and hardware to bulkier components like brake rotors and alternators, and crews need to find the right part quickly when a truck or piece of equipment is down. Static shelving forces a tradeoff between keeping every part accessible and keeping the room compact.
Mobile shelving removes that tradeoff by closing off every aisle except the one in use, so a small city garage can store considerably more parts inventory in the same floor space, organized by shelf and divider rather than piled into open bins.

What Material Handling USA supplied
The system Material Handling USA installed for Herriman City uses mechanical handwheel-driven carriages built to seven shelf levels, with two dividers per shelf to keep smaller parts and hardware sorted. It was installed on a twin ramp rather than a sub-floor, so the existing floor stayed at grade for the fleet garage’s cart and dolly traffic.
The system was quoted and purchased on the State of Utah cooperative contract, which is how most Utah cities buy shelving and storage equipment without running a separate bid.
System layout
The layout drawing below shows the system as installed: mechanical mobile shelving carriages on floor rail, sized to the fleet parts room. Dimensions and the exact aisle count are specific to this room and are shown for illustration of how a mobile shelving system is planned before it is built.

What the city gained
Choosing mobile shelving for a fleet parts room
| Static shelving aisles | Mechanical mobile shelving | |
|---|---|---|
| Floor space per unit of storage | One aisle open per row, all the time | One aisle open at a time, on demand |
| Part sizes handled | Depends on fixed shelf spacing | Seven shelf levels and dividers cover small hardware through bulkier components |
| Access speed | Immediate, every aisle | One handwheel turn to open the needed aisle |
| Best fit | Large crews needing simultaneous access | A single fleet garage crew retrieving parts one job at a time |
| Room footprint | Needs the most floor area for a given capacity | Fits more parts inventory in the same or smaller room |
