About the project
The Utah Highway Patrol needed a compact, organized way to store tactical gear and equipment at its Farmington facility, alongside a desk area used for related administrative work.
Material Handling USA supplied a mechanical mobile shelving system to complete the room layout, along with a desk area, installed on a twin ramp so no sub-floor was needed. The system was quoted on the State of Utah cooperative contract, with delivery and installation completed in about four weeks.
Project scope at a glance
The situation
A law enforcement agency’s equipment room has to keep gear organized, quickly accessible to assigned personnel, and out of the way when it is not needed. Fixed shelving in a small equipment room can force a choice between keeping gear reachable and keeping the room usable for anything else, including a desk for related work.
Mobile shelving addressed that by consolidating storage into a smaller footprint, freeing space in the same room for a desk area, while keeping every aisle of gear one handwheel turn away.

What Material Handling USA supplied
Material Handling USA supplied mechanical mobile shelving built to the room’s layout drawing, along with an adjoining desk area, so the finished room combines dense equipment storage with a working desk space rather than dedicating the whole room to one function.
The system was installed on a twin ramp rather than a sub-floor, and was quoted and purchased on the State of Utah cooperative contract.
System layout
The layout drawing below shows the system as installed: mechanical mobile shelving carriages alongside the desk area, sized to the room. Dimensions and the exact layout are specific to this room and are shown for illustration of how a mobile shelving system is planned before it is built.

What the agency gained
Choosing mobile shelving for an equipment storage room
| Static shelving aisles | Mechanical mobile shelving | |
|---|---|---|
| Floor space per unit of storage | One aisle open per row, all the time | One aisle open at a time, on demand |
| Room flexibility | Little room left for other uses | Frees floor space for a desk area, as on this project |
| Access speed | Immediate, every aisle | One handwheel turn to open the needed aisle |
| Best fit | Rooms needing constant simultaneous access | Equipment rooms accessed by assigned staff one at a time |
| Organization | Whatever the fixture allows | Labeled shelves make issued equipment easy to inventory |
