Heavy-duty steel industrial shelving and modular drawer cabinets storing tools and parts in a manufacturing plant

Storage built for tool cribs, die shops, and production-line staging

A manufacturing floor’s storage problem is different from a warehouse’s: instead of pallets moving in and out, it’s tools, dies, fixtures, small parts, and consumables that need to be found fast, put back in the same spot, and organized around a fixed workstation or production line. MH-USA sells and installs Borroughs industrial shelving, modular drawer cabinets, and workbenches built for exactly that job — a different product mix from the bulk pallet storage handled by our pallet rack line.

Product families used most often on a manufacturing floor

  • Box Edge Plus industrial shelving — open, closed, or bin-type steel shelving configurations for parts and small bulk items, with multiple post styles and sizes.
  • Rivet-Span boltless shelving — open-access-from-all-sides shelving for heavier or bulkier materials, using the same tool-free riveted-beam system as our record and bulk storage line.
  • Flexi-Bin shelving — 38-inch-wide, 12-inch-deep units with slide-in shelves, sliding dividers and optional drawers that give fasteners, fittings and other small parts a fixed, labeled opening; see Borroughs Flexi-Bin shelving for the FB101–FB108 configurations.
  • High-density (HD) drawers integrated into shelving — a common way to add small-parts and tool organization inside an existing shelving footprint rather than adding a separate cabinet.
  • Modular drawer cabinets — standalone secured storage for tools, parts, and equipment, sized to the manufacturing operation rather than a fixed catalog size.
  • Workbenches — available with hardwood, painted steel, or stainless steel tops, with optional drawer and shelf accessories built into the bench itself.

Planning storage around how the floor actually works

Manufacturing storage layouts work best when they’re built around the task, not a generic aisle grid: a tool crib laid out for fast checkout and return, a die shop shelving system sized to the heaviest die on the floor, or point-of-use drawer storage staged directly at a workstation to cut walking time. We work from your floor plan, part/tool inventory, and workflow to size shelving depth, drawer configurations, and bench placement before ordering hardware.

Because MH-USA does not warehouse this line as retail stock, manufacturing storage projects are quoted and built to the facility — we sell and install it, we don’t pull it off a shelf.

Why manufacturers standardize on modular storage

🛠

Faster tool/part retrieval

High-density drawers and clear labeling cut the time spent searching for or misplacing tools and small parts.

🔄

Reconfigurable as workflow changes

Boltless and modular components can be rearranged as a line changes over, without a full teardown.

⚖️

Supports 5S and lean initiatives

Open, labeled, ergonomic storage layouts are a common building block of 5S and lean-manufacturing programs.

🔧

Built for daily industrial use

Steel construction and industrial-grade hardware are sized for constant handling, not occasional storage.

Not sure whether you need shelving, drawers, or a workbench?

Bulk or bulky parts and tools usually go on open shelving; small parts, fasteners, and tooling that need protection or security usually go in drawers; a fixed assembly or inspection task usually needs a workbench with integrated storage. Most tool cribs use a mix of all three.

Product specs that matter on a manufacturing floor

Manufacturing storage is judged on how fast a tool, die, or part comes off the shelf and goes back — not just total capacity. A few specs from the actual product lines we install:

  • High-density drawers integrated into shelving carry a 400 lb. per-drawer capacity with 100–110% full extension for access to the back of the drawer, auto-safety clips that lock the suspension against accidental release, and keyed-alike locks — the same drawer platform used across Borroughs’ modular drawer cabinets and shop-equipment cabinets.
  • B-Span wide-span shelving bridges the gap between clip-type shelving and full pallet rack for large, hand-loaded, non-palletized items — dies, fixtures, oversized parts. Beams come in 14-gauge (standard duty) or 12-gauge (heavy duty), in 4 to 10 ft. widths adjustable on 2″ centers, with posts roll-formed as high as 19 ft.
  • Workbenches are available with hardwood, painted-steel, or stainless-steel tops, and can be configured with telescoping-leg height adjustment, a leveling kit, a caster kit for mobility, back/side modesty panels, a bottom shelf, footrest, edge guards, and a ledge shelf — so a bench can be built to the actual workstation rather than a fixed catalog size.
  • Modular drawer cabinets come in four standard widths (23S, 30S, 45S, 60S) and multiple heights (stand-up, bench, table, desk, eye-level, counter), so drawer/shelf combinations can be matched to how a specific station is used rather than forcing one cabinet size across a whole floor.

Standardizing on this kind of modular, reconfigurable storage is also the physical backbone of a 5S program — the lean-manufacturing discipline (Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain) that depends on every tool and part having one labeled, visible home. OSHA’s general housekeeping requirement (29 CFR 1910.22, keeping aisles and workplaces clean, orderly, and free of hazards) is easier to sustain when storage is purpose-built rather than improvised with pallet stacks or floor piles.

Manufacturing storage FAQ

Can drawer cabinets handle heavy tooling, not just small parts?
Borroughs HD drawers used in shelving and modular cabinets carry a 400 lb. per-drawer rating with full extension, which covers most hand tools, fixtures, and small dies; genuinely heavy dies or tooling are better suited to B-Span wide-span shelving or a dedicated die rack.
Do workbenches need to be a fixed size, or can they be customized per station?
Borroughs workbenches support a wide range of top materials and add-ons (leveling, casters, modesty panels, footrests, edge guards, ledge shelves), so a bench can be sized and equipped to the specific station rather than forcing one standard size across the floor.
Can Borroughs shelving and drawer cabinets be mixed in the same run?
Yes — high-density drawers are commonly integrated directly into a shelving unit’s footprint alongside open shelf levels, so a single row can combine both storage types.
What’s the difference between Box Edge Plus and Rivet-Span shelving?
Box Edge Plus is a bolted, boxed-edge shelf system available in open, closed, or bin configurations; Rivet-Span is a boltless, riveted-beam system with open access from all four sides, generally used for bulkier or heavier items.
Do workbenches come with built-in storage?
Workbenches can be ordered with optional drawer and shelf accessories, so a single bench can serve as both a work surface and point-of-use storage.
Do you install Borroughs manufacturing storage, or just sell the hardware?
We handle both — layout planning, hardware, and on-site installation. We sell and install this line; we do not warehouse it as retail stock.
Is this the same product line used for automotive parts storage?
It’s the same manufacturer platform (Rivet-Span, Box Edge Plus, modular drawer cabinets) configured differently — see our Borroughs automotive shelving page for the dealership/service-department version.
