When Young Ford opened a new dealership location in Brigham City, Utah, the parts department needed to be organized and productive from day one. Service departments live or die on how fast a technician can put a hand on the right brake pad, sensor or filter, so the storage system had to be dense, adjustable and durable enough for daily forklift and cart traffic.

Material Handling USA supplied and installed a complete system of Borroughs Box Edge Plus® steel shelving with integrated modular drawer cabinets, finished in a custom blue and white to match the dealership’s branding. Borroughs, based in Kalamazoo, Michigan, has manufactured steel shelving in the US since 1938 and is one of the shelving lines Material Handling USA installs for automotive dealerships and service centers nationwide.

The Project: Custom Blue & White Box Edge Shelving

Aisle of blue and white Box Edge Plus® shelving with drawer cabinets at Young Ford

As a brand-new dealership, Young Ford had one shot to get the parts department right the first time. Their team needed shelving that could hold everything from small electrical components to bulkier mechanical parts, stand up to daily wear, and stay easy to reorganize as inventory mix shifted month to month.

The installed system uses Box Edge Plus® open shelving for general parts storage, with sections of Borroughs modular drawer cabinets built into the same runs for small tools, fasteners and specialty parts. Every shelf and divider is adjustable on the post system without tools, so staff can reconfigure a bay as the parts catalog changes.

  • Adjustable shelves & dividers — reconfigure a bay for a new part number in minutes as inventory shifts, without disturbing the shelving on either side.
  • Integrated drawer storage — modular drawer cabinets for small tools, sensors, gaskets and fasteners, built into the same post system as the open shelving.
  • Custom blue & white finish — factory finish matched to the dealership’s branding for a clean, professional service floor appearance.
  • Expandable layout — more bays and drawer sections can be added on the same post system as inventory grows.

What Makes Box Edge Plus® Work for a Service Department

Box Edge Plus® is Borroughs’ core industrial shelving platform, built for everything from tiny fasteners to bulky boxed inventory, and engineered to scale into multi-level and high-rise systems. Here is what that construction actually gets you on a busy parts counter.

Borroughs Box Edge industrial steel shelving with reinforced welded box-edge shelf profileWelded Box-Edge Shelf ProfileEvery shelf’s front and rear edges are formed into a closed, welded box section with lapped, welded corners. That construction is what keeps a shelf loaded with brake rotors or sheet metal from sagging or bowing over years of daily use.

The Layout: Designed in 3D Before It Shipped

Material Handling USA models every shelving project in Configura’s CET software so the customer can see the finished bays, drawer cabinets and aisles before anything is ordered. The 3D view and floor plan below are the actual design drawings produced for this project — a design proposal, not a certified structural or code drawing.

How We Work

1

Walk the parts department

We measure the room, note doorways, columns, service counters and any existing racking, and talk through how technicians and counter staff actually move through the space.

2

Model the layout in CET Configura

Every bay, drawer cabinet and aisle is modeled to scale in Borroughs’ 3D design software, the same drawing type shown further down this page, before a single part number is ordered.

3

Confirm finish, drawers and dividers

Color, drawer counts, shelf dividers and label holders are locked in against your inventory mix — small fasteners need different bays than bumpers or batteries.

4

Fabricate and ship

Box Edge Plus® shelving and drawer cabinets are built to the confirmed layout and shipped as a complete package with clips, dividers and hardware.

5

Install on site

Our crew assembles and levels every run, sets drawer cabinets into the same post system, and walks the finished layout with your team before handoff.

FAQs

Who makes the shelving used in this project?
Borroughs, LLC of Kalamazoo, Michigan — a US steel shelving manufacturer in business since 1938. Material Handling USA supplied and installed Borroughs’ Box Edge Plus® shelving and modular drawer cabinets for the new Young Ford parts department in Brigham City, Utah.
What is box edge shelving and why use it for automotive parts?
Box edge shelving gets its name from the closed, welded box shape formed into the front and rear edges of every shelf, with lapped and welded corners. That construction adds rigidity against the impact and point loads common in a service department — rotors, calipers and boxed parts set down hard and often — without the shelf bowing or sagging over time.
Can drawers and open shelving be combined in the same system?
Yes. Borroughs’ modular drawer cabinets install into the same Box Edge Plus® post system as open shelving, so a dealership can run open bays for boxed parts and drawer sections for small components side by side, and add more of either later as inventory changes.
How much weight can a drawer hold?
Borroughs publishes up to 400 lb per drawer on full-extension slides, with optional soft-close. Exact capacity depends on the drawer size and configuration ordered; we confirm the rated load for your specific layout before it ships.
Can the finish match our dealership branding?
Yes — the Young Ford installation shown on this page was finished in a custom blue and white powder coat to match the dealership’s colors. Box Edge Plus® shelving and drawer cabinets are available in a range of factory finishes at no change to the underlying shelf construction.
Do you design the layout before we order?
Yes. We model the room in Configura, Borroughs’ 3D layout software, so you can see every shelf, drawer and aisle before anything ships. The 3D view and floor plan drawings further down this page are the actual design set produced for this project, not stock illustrations.
Is this the same system for tire, battery or bulky-parts storage?
Box Edge Plus® scales from small-parts drawers to bulky inventory in the same platform, but very large or heavy items like tires and engines are sometimes better served by pallet rack or a dedicated cantilever or carousel system. We’ll recommend the right mix rather than force everything onto one shelf type.
