A Growing Credit Union, a Fixed Amount of Floor Space

When a financial institution outgrows its records room, the usual options are bad ones: lease off-site storage, build an addition, or start stacking boxes in hallways. Mountain America Credit Union faced that squeeze at its West Jordan corporate campus — and solved it without adding a single square foot of building.
Material Handling USA designed and installed an Aurora high-density mobile shelving system that stores the same volume of loan files, member records and operational documents in roughly half the floor space of the static shelving it replaced. The rows sit on wheeled carriages that compact together and open a single aisle on demand, so the room works harder while the building stays the same size.

The Customer: Mountain America Credit Union

Founded in 1934, Mountain America Credit Union has grown from a small employee credit union into one of the largest credit unions in the western United States, serving more than a million members through 100-plus branches across Utah, Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Nevada and New Mexico. Its corporate campus at 7167 S Center Park Drive in West Jordan, Utah supports administrative, records and member-service functions for branches across all of those states.
As Mountain America expanded from a regional Utah institution into a multi-state financial-services provider, the paperwork expanded with it. Loan files, member account documentation, regulatory compliance records and branch-support materials all needed organized, accessible and secure storage — and in a credit union subject to federal and state recordkeeping rules, simply discarding documents to free up space is rarely an option.
The Challenge

The credit union’s existing static shelving and filing systems were consuming a growing share of the facility’s floor space. Every additional row of conventional shelving demanded its own permanent access aisle, so a large fraction of the room was standing empty most of the day just to allow occasional access.
Mountain America needed a storage solution that could:
- Absorb current document volumes and leave clear room for future growth
- Fit entirely within the existing room — no addition, no off-site storage
- Keep federally and state-regulated records organized, accessible and secure
- Stay easy for staff to operate every day, at full load, without special training
- Require little to no ongoing maintenance or electrical infrastructure
The Solution: Aurora Mechanical-Assist Mobile Shelving

Material Handling USA designed and installed an Aurora mechanical-assist mobile shelving system at the West Jordan facility. Multiple high-density carriages ride on a floor-level track; the rows compact together when no one needs them and open on demand when staff need to retrieve materials, so the system needs only one moving aisle instead of one fixed aisle per row.
The system was configured with adjustable shelf levels and integrated dividers to organize financial documents, loan files and operational records. Each carriage is opened with an ergonomic three-spoke handle that moves smoothly even when the shelving is fully loaded, and clean white steel end panels give the installation a professional appearance that fits the credit union’s corporate environment.
How the vendor was verified
Product facts on this page — Quik-Lok® boltless shelving, the Twin Ramp track, the mechanical-assist three-spoke drive, the patented concave-wheel/convex-rail guidance and the Limited Lifetime Warranty — are drawn from Aurora Storage Products’ own published brochures and product literature. We describe only what the project photographs show and what the manufacturer publishes; we do not publish carriage counts, dimensions or capacities we cannot document for this specific installation.
System Features
Three things make an Aurora mechanical-assist system a good fit for a records room like Mountain America’s — each of them visible in the photographs from the installation.
Mechanical-Assist Three-Spoke DriveEach moveable carriage is opened with an ergonomic three-spoke handle. Aurora’s mechanical-assist gearing multiplies a light hand effort into smooth movement of a fully loaded carriage, and a center aisle-safety lock holds adjacent carriages in place while someone is working in the open aisle. No electricity, no motor, no maintenance contract.
Twin Ramp Low-Profile TrackThe system runs on Aurora’s Twin Ramp track, a low-profile rail-and-ramp that installs directly on the existing floor. There is no raised sub-floor to build, which shortens installation and keeps the finished floor height close to the surrounding space. Aurora’s patented concave-wheel / convex-rail guidance keeps carriages tracking straight with no play.
White Steel End Panels & Quik-Lok ShelvingClean white steel end panels give the system a professional look suited to a corporate financial environment. Behind them sits Aurora Quik-Lok shelving — a boltless keyhole-and-rivet design with no nuts, bolts or screws — so shelves adjust, add or relocate without hardware as the credit union’s storage needs change.Aurora Mobile Shelving Specifications

Space Savings & Return on Investment

The core advantage of Aurora mobile shelving over static shelving and filing cabinets is space efficiency. By eliminating the many fixed aisles that static shelving needs and compacting the rows together, the system stores the same volume of material in roughly half the floor space — Aurora publishes savings of up to about 50%. For a growing credit union, that recovered square footage becomes deferred expansion cost or space that can be repurposed for member-facing services and staff workstations.
The mechanical-assist design drives the second half of the return. Unlike powered systems that require electrical connections and ongoing service, the hand-driven three-spoke system operates with zero electricity and minimal upkeep, so the total cost of ownership stays low while the system runs reliably for years. Aurora’s Limited Lifetime Warranty on the structural frames protects the investment further.
Two ways the system pays back
Real-estate cost avoidance: consolidating records into half the footprint avoids the cost of leasing or building additional storage — meaningful in the Salt Lake City metro, where commercial real estate keeps rising. Operational productivity: organized, dividered storage cuts the time staff spend locating documents, which speeds member service and audit preparation.
