Why Pharmacies Choose a Rotary Cabinet
Most pharmacy storage problems are not about total volume. They are about keeping a mixed inventory — filled prescriptions waiting for pick-up, unit-of-use stock, OTC overflow, supplies, paperwork — organized, visible to the person filling and closed to everyone else, in a space that was sized for a counter and a few shelving units. Open shelving shows everything to the whole room. Steel storage cabinets with swing doors need door clearance and still leave staff digging to the back of a deep shelf.
A Times-2 rotary cabinet solves that with a rotating inner unit inside a fixed housing. Both faces of the interior are loaded, and the technician turns whichever face they need toward them — with a foot pedal or a hand release, according to Aurora’s pharmacy cabinet literature. Turn it back and the stored side faces the wall; close and lock the front and nothing on the inside is visible from the counter.
Aurora packages the pharmacy version as a cabinet built to “efficiently organize and manage medical supplies, pharmaceuticals and records all in one storage cabinet,” as a standalone unit or in a row of multiples. The full model family, sizes and interior catalog sit on our Times-2 Speed Files hub; this page covers the pharmacy application specifically.

Everything in one footprint. A pharmacy cabinet can hold pick-up bags on one face and drawers of stock on the other, so a small dispensary does not need a separate will-call wall, a supply rack and a locked cabinet for the same few hundred square feet.
No swing clearance in the aisle. The inner unit rotates within the cabinet’s own footprint, which matters behind a narrow counter where two staff pass each other all day.
Starts small, grows in a row. Aurora offers the pharmacy cabinet as a standalone unit or in a row of multiples (starter plus adder units), so a clinic can begin with one cabinet and extend the row when a second provider or a new service line adds stock.
What Goes Inside a Times-2 Pharmacy Cabinet
The pharmacy configuration is a set of interior accessories rather than a different cabinet. These are the components Aurora lists for it, and each tier can be chosen separately, so the mix follows your workflow instead of a fixed layout.
Hanging rails for pick-up bags. Filled prescriptions hang in their bags from rails across the tier, so the label faces the person retrieving it and bags are not crushed under each other in a bin. Rails can be arranged alphabetically, by pick-up date or by delivery route — whichever system your staff already use at will-call.
Divided drawers. Aurora specifies 3½-inch-high drawers with front-to-back dividers, which suit boxed and bottled stock, syringes, dressings and small supplies that disappear on a flat shelf.
Color-coded shelf bins. Bins on open tiers separate contents by patient, provider or drug type — Aurora’s own suggested groupings — and make low stock obvious at a glance.

Locking DrawersIndividually locking drawers sit inside the locked cabinet, giving regulated prescriptions a second layer of control that only certain keys open.
Records on the Same UnitOpen or hanging-file tiers keep signature logs, invoices and reference binders next to the stock they document instead of in a separate office.
Rows of MultiplesStandalone units or connected rows: Aurora offers two starter widths and adder units, with ten heights for counter-height or full-height runs.Heights and widths come from Aurora’s specification sheet: ten heights from 29½″ to 92½″ and starter widths of 36½″ and 45¼″. Adder widths, depths and tier-by-tier interior dimensions are on the Times-2 model and sizing page and on the current Aurora sheet, which governs every quote.
Securing Medications and Controlled Stock
A Times-2 pharmacy cabinet gives you two layers of hardware. The cabinet lock closes the whole unit — Aurora offers it as a key lock or as numeric code (keypad) access. Inside, individually locking drawers can be reserved for the items that need tighter control. With keypad access, a shared entry code replaces the key that inevitably ends up in a desk drawer; keyed drawers keep the second layer limited to the people who hold those keys.
Where controlled substances are involved, the rules are set elsewhere. DEA’s physical security regulation for registrants (21 CFR 1301.75) calls for controlled substances to be kept in a securely locked, substantially constructed cabinet, with specific allowances for pharmacies. In Utah, pharmacy licensing and inspection run through the Division of Professional Licensing, and your pharmacist-in-charge or compliance lead decides what a given drawer may hold.
We supply and install the cabinet and lock hardware; we do not certify DEA or board of pharmacy compliance, and nothing on this page is legal advice. If your inspector expects a safe, a vault or an automated dispensing cabinet for a schedule, that requirement wins — tell us and we will plan the Times-2 around it for everything else.

- Decide which items get a locking drawer versus the cabinet lock alone
- Choose keyed or keypad cabinet access based on how many staff need entry
- Keep a key-control or code-change routine as part of your written procedures
- Confirm schedule-specific storage with your pharmacist-in-charge before ordering
Where a Rotary Pharmacy Cabinet Fits

Retail and outpatient will-call. Bag rails turn a cabinet into a closed will-call station behind the counter. Filled orders are out of sight from the waiting area and come around to the technician in one motion.
Clinic and urgent-care medication rooms. Sample stock, injection supplies, dispensed-in-office medications and paperwork share one locking unit, which suits family practices, urgent care, dental and specialty clinics that dispense a limited formulary.
Long-term care, behavioral health and corrections health units. Facilities that manage resident medications in a nursing office use rotary cabinets to keep supplies and records together behind one lock without adding a room.
Hospital satellite and floor stock. Where an automated dispensing system handles the formulary, a Times-2 often takes the overflow — bulk supplies, forms, returns and reference material that do not belong in a machine drawer.
Utah pharmacies, clinics and health-system sites from Salt Lake City, Murray and West Valley City to Ogden, Provo, Orem, St. George and Logan are served by our Salt Lake City project team — see Times-2 Speed Files in Utah for delivery and installation across the state. If the same building also keeps active patient charts, our medical chart rotary cabinet guide covers that side of the clinic.
Rotary Cabinet, Pharmacy Carousel or Shelving?
“Pharmacy carousel” gets used for three very different products. Choosing the right one depends on how many items you pick a day and how much budget and floor you have.
| Question | Times-2 rotary cabinet | Automated vertical carousel | Mobile or track shelving |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Manually rotated locking cabinet | Powered unit that brings trays to the operator | High-density shelving on rails or tracks |
| Best fit | Will-call, clinic dispensary, med rooms | High-volume hospital or central-fill pharmacy | Bulk stock rooms and records |
| Security | Cabinet lock plus locking drawers | User access control on the machine | Locking carriages or a locked room |
| Power and floor work | None; freestanding | Electrical service, floor check, larger footprint | Rails or tracks; floor check first |

Many pharmacies use more than one: a Times-2 at will-call, an automated carousel for fast-moving stock, and shelving or mobile shelving in Utah for the back room. For moving medications to the floor, see our medical carts.
Planning a Rotary Pharmacy Cabinet
List what goes in it
Pick-up bag volume on a busy day, drawer stock, bins and any files. Mark which items need a locking drawer.
Measure the wall
Wall length, ceiling height and the route in — door widths, corridors, elevators. Cabinets ship in sections and are assembled in place.
Pick height and tiers
Counter height under a work surface, or full height for capacity. We lay out rails, drawers and bins tier by tier against Aurora’s options.
Choose locks and finish
Key or keypad cabinet lock, locking drawers, and a finish from Aurora’s standard color range.
Delivery and install
Our Utah crew delivers, assembles and levels the cabinet, scheduling around pharmacy hours so the counter stays open.
Send us a photo of the wall and a rough list of what you store, or call the Utah project line at 801-328-8788. Lead time, price and final interior layout come from Aurora’s current specification sheet and our written quote — we will not guess at them on a web page.
Shop Records and File Storage Supplies
