Wire Shelving on High-Density Mobile Carriages

MMI Storage Solutions builds wire and solid shelving mounted on rolling carriages that ride
floor-mounted rail. Instead of every aisle staying open all the time, the carriages compress
together and a single working aisle opens wherever someone needs access — the same
track-mounted principle used across the mobile shelving lines Material Handling USA supplies,
applied here with MMI’s own carriage frames, wire shelf decking and end-panel finish options.

Material Handling USA sources MMI systems and photography directly from MMI Storage
Solutions and plans, specifies and coordinates installation of MMI mobile shelving for
customers who need a retail-, warehouse- or agriculture-grade system rather than an
institutional records or library configuration.

MMI ships two drive types — manual and mechanical-assist — and finishes carriage
end panels in several material options so a system can double as merchandising, signage or
divider space instead of a plain steel face.

Manual vs. Mechanical-Assist Carriages

MMI builds two carriage drive types, both moving on the same floor rail:

Neither carriage type requires an electrical connection, which keeps installation simpler in retrofit spaces without dedicated power runs. If a project needs powered, motorized mobile shelving instead, see our Datum or Aurora lines.

End Panel Finishes & Accessories

Because MMI systems run heavily into retail, grocery and dispensary backrooms, end panels
are treated as usable surface, not just a carriage face. MMI offers panels in:

  • Melamine — lightweight, durable, heat-resistant hard panel finish.
  • Gridwall — wire grid panel that accepts hooks, shelves and brackets for
    merchandising or stockroom display.
  • Pegboard — drilled board for peg-and-hook tool or product organization.
  • Masonite — dense compressed hardboard for a smooth, durable panel face.
  • Dry-erase board — write-on surface for scheduling, put-away or shift notes.
  • Acrylic — a lighter, more durable alternative to glass panel inserts.

Beyond the carriage itself, MMI’s accessory line covers desks, lockers, safes, secured
storage, ladder hangers for suspending bulky items off the floor, security cages for
high-value or regulated inventory, upright caps, standard brackets, dividers and bins.

Where MMI Mobile Shelving Is Used

MMI grew out of the retail and specialty-commercial side of the mobile shelving market rather than government records or library storage, so most MMI installs land in one of these markets:

🛍️

Retail Stockrooms

Backroom and stockroom density gains without giving up sales-floor square footage.

Golf & Country Clubs

Bag storage, pro-shop inventory and equipment rooms on a single-aisle footprint.

📦

Warehouse Solutions

High-density carriages fitted onto pallet racking, plus processing tables and manager’s desks.

🍽️

Food Service

Dry storage and supply rooms that need more shelf without more floor.

🌱

Agriculture & Cultivation

Grow and processing facility storage, including cannabis cultivation operations.

🏪

Grocery

Backroom stock and supply storage for grocery and convenience formats.

About MMI Storage Solutions

MMI Storage Solutions was founded in 1986 as Mobile Media, Inc. in New Jersey, originally
building mobile systems for the media industry. The company relocated to New York’s Hudson
Valley in the mid-1990s and expanded into offices, libraries and retail space, eventually
bringing shelf and shelving-unit manufacturing in-house. MMI is based in Middletown, New York,
and has been part of Grow Generation since December 2021, which broadened the company’s
reach into agricultural and cultivation storage alongside its original retail base.

Material Handling USA is an authorized source for MMI mobile shelving systems and uses

Planning Decisions Before You Buy

📏

Range Length & Load

Longer or heavier carriage runs generally move to mechanical-assist rather than manual push-pull.

🧱

Floor Flatness

Rail requires a flat, level floor; older slabs may need prep or shimming before install.

🚧

Aisle Width

One working aisle has to clear code and equipment access — confirmed during layout, not after order.

🔒

Security & Access

Aisle locks are standard on mechanical-assist carriages; lockable end panels and secured accessories are available.

🏗️

Structural Review

Loaded carriage weight on an upper floor should be checked against the building’s structural capacity.

🎨

End Panel Finish

Melamine, gridwall, pegboard, masonite, dry-erase or acrylic — picked for how the panel face will actually be used.

How an MMI Mobile Shelving Project Runs

1

Space Assessment

We measure the room, confirm floor condition and rough out carriage count and range length.

2

System Design

Manual vs. mechanical-assist, shelf type and end-panel finish are selected against load, aisle and budget.

3

Procurement

MMI builds the system to the confirmed layout; MH-USA coordinates order, freight and delivery timing.

4

Installation

Rail is set to a level floor and carriages, shelving and end panels are assembled and adjusted on site.

MMI Mobile Shelving FAQ

Does MMI make a powered, motorized mobile shelving system?
No — MMI’s mobile shelving line is manual push-pull or mechanical-assist (geared handle) carriages, not electric/powered. If a project needs a powered system, we also supply Datum and Aurora powered mobile shelving.
What’s the difference between MMI’s manual and mechanical-assist carriages?
Manual carriages are push-pull and generally suit runs under 12 ft under normal loading. Mechanical-assist carriages add a geared handle with three gear ratios for excessive loads or longer carriage runs, plus standard aisle locks.
Can MMI end panels be used for merchandising or signage?
Yes. MMI offers gridwall, pegboard, melamine, masonite, dry-erase and acrylic panel finishes, so an end panel can double as display, signage or write-on surface instead of plain steel.
What markets does MMI mobile shelving serve?
MMI’s own market focus is retail, golf and country clubs, warehouse, food service, agriculture and cultivation, dispensaries and grocery — a more commercial/retail profile than the government-records or library focus of some other mobile shelving brands we carry.
Where is MMI Storage Solutions located?
MMI is based in Middletown, New York. The company was founded in 1986 and has been part of Grow Generation since December 2021.
Can MMI mobile shelving be fitted onto pallet racking for warehouse use?
Yes — MMI’s high-density mobile carriages can be fitted onto pallet racking as well as shelving, and the line also includes processing tables, manager’s desks, ladder hangers, security cages and double-deck layouts for taller warehouse spaces.
