Stacking bins: one container, three mounting options

A stacking bin has to do two jobs a shelf bin never does: carry its own weight in a column, and stay put while the column is moved. That is why a stacking bin is built differently: reinforced ribs so the side walls do not spread under load, an extra-wide stacking ledge so the bin above sits square, an anti-slide stop so the stack does not creep forward, and on the hang-and-stack families a full-width rear hanger so the same bin can hang from a louvered panel or bin rail instead of sitting on a shelf.

Material Handling USA supplies the complete Quantum Storage Systems stacking bin range as a supplier and project partner — from a 5-3/8" hang bin at a bench through to a 41-7/8" RackBin sized to fill a pallet rack bay, and the steel, wire, louvered-panel and mobile hardware they mount to. If your parts live on a shelf and never move, shelf bins are cheaper per position. If the same container has to work on a wall, a bench, a shelf and a cart, this is the page you want. Browse the live stocked range in our Quantum bins and containers category.

What’s on this page

Every stacking and hang-and-stack family we stock, with published dimensions and capacities: Ultra Stack & Hang, MAGNUM heavy-duty, HULK 24", 30" and 36" containers, RackBin 42", Giant Stack hopper containers, clear tip-out bins and the conductive line, plus mobile options, complete shelving packages and a selection table. No pricing — bin pricing moves with resin cost and carton quantity, so we quote it live.

  • Reinforced rib design adds strength and prevents the side walls spreading.
  • Extra-wide stacking ledge keeps a loaded column stable.
  • Anti-slide stop prevents stacked bins shifting forward.
  • Full-width rear hanger on hang-and-stack sizes for louvered panels and rails.
  • Large front label slot sized for barcode labels, not just handwriting.
  • Optional windows and dividers raise usable capacity and keep contents separated.

Ultra Stack & Hang bins — 22 sizes

The Ultra line is the most-specified stacking bin we sell, because one bin covers three mounting methods. A full-width hanger supports the bin from a louvered panel or rail; the extra-wide stacking ledge and anti-slide stop make a stable free-standing column on a bench or shelf. Standard colors are blue, green, ivory, red, yellow, black and clear, with stone and crystal clear in selected sizes (additional colors are quotable subject to upcharge and minimum run quantity). Bins are moulded from heavy-duty virgin-grade high-density polypropylene, are waterproof, resist weak acids and alkalis, and are autoclavable up to 250°F.

Windows, dividers, lids and label holders

Optional clear window fronts (WUS-series) raise usable capacity, stop spillage and keep dust off parts. Optional dividers and cross dividers (DUS/CRDUS-series) split a bin into two or four compartments — most sizes have one divider slot, the wider sizes have three. Clear lids (COV-series) pivot up and down on holes moulded into the rear of the bin. Clear label holders with laser inserts slide into the front label slot and ship in packs of 25.

MAGNUM heavy-duty bins — when the parts are heavy

MAGNUM bins are the answer when an Ultra bin is strong enough for the part but not for the column. Extra-heavy double-wall thickness with a preformed lip lets the bins interlock, giving up to 150 lb stack capacity, and a moulded rear handle makes a loaded bin practical to carry. They are impervious to most solvents, corrosion, rust and rot resistant, and published as resisting temperatures from −40°F to 250°F, which is why they turn up in cold storage, foundries and outdoor-adjacent yards. Six sizes, five colors — blue, green, red, yellow and black.

HULK containers — 24", 30" and 36" long

HULK containers exist because long parts do not fit bins designed around a 12" shelf. A HULK 24" container gives a full two feet of length for deep shelving; the 30" and 36" containers go further for long stock and bulky assemblies. All have heavy-duty front, back and side grips so two people can move a loaded container, a wide stacking ledge and anti-slide lock, and three divider slots (8-1/4" wide bins have one). They are waterproof, corrosion free, autoclavable up to 250°F and resistant to extreme cold.

RackBin 42" containers — built for pallet rack

Most bulk bins on pallet rack waste depth, because they are sized for shelving and a 42" deep beam bay is deeper than any shelf. RackBin containers are 41-7/8" long specifically so a 42" deep bay carries a full-depth container with nothing left over. Three sizes, two colors (blue and gray), heavy-duty grips front, back and sides, wide stacking ledge and anti-slide lock, and eight 1/4" drain-hole positions moulded into the base for drainage and air circulation when you need them. Published maximum capacity runs up to 180 lb per bin depending on size.

  • Check the beam pair, not the bay label. Measure clear beam-to-beam depth and the beam face height before you order.
  • Decide on decking. RackBins can sit on wire decking, solid decking or slats — wire decking keeps the drain holes usable.
  • Plan the reach. A full-depth 42" container at height needs a defined retrieval method; we will flag it if the layout does not have one.

Giant Stack containers — bulk parts, tools and recycling

Giant Stack containers are the wide-open hopper option: a multipurpose front that gives easy access to large parts, tools and warehouse items, moulded from high-density tri-clear virgin-grade polypropylene so you can see the level from the aisle. They stack up to six containers high, which makes a tall, sturdy free-standing column out of floor space you were not using. Six 1/4" drain-hole positions in the base handle wash-down and wet parts. Complete wire shelving packages are available at 18"W × 36"L × 74"H and 18"W × 42"L × 74"H in five-shelf configurations.

Clear tip-out bins

Tip-out bins solve a different problem: dozens of tiny part numbers at a bench or a service counter, where an open bin front would spill and a drawer would hide the contents. Each clear compartment tips forward for access and lifts out completely so it can be carried to the job, and the clear front means the part is identified by sight. Units mount on a bench, on a wall, in rails and frames, on floor stands (including mobile floor stands), in free-standing configurations, in tall cabinets and in gondola slider systems — so the same compartment set scales from a single three-bin unit to a full service-department wall.

Bench and wall units

Three-, four- and larger compartment units, typically in white, ivory and gray frames, that sit on a bench or screw to a wall above one.

Rails and frames

Rail and frame systems that carry multiple tip-out units in a column or a grid so a whole part family lives in one visible block.

Conductive bins for electronics handling

The conductive line is moulded from a carbon-filled copolymer polypropylene rather than a coated or topically treated plastic, so the conductive property is part of the material. The manufacturer states an electrostatic decay rate under 0.1 second tested by ASTM-D257 methods and surface resistivity below 10⁵ ohms per square. We repeat those figures as the manufacturer’s, not as a certification: conductive bins have to be properly grounded for your specific application, and your ESD program — not the bin — determines compliance. Tell us the requirement your auditor is working to and we will get the specifics confirmed in writing before you order.

  • Conductive hang-and-stack bins in the same sizes as the standard Ultra line, marked CO.
  • Conductive shelf bins for existing shelf-bin runs in an ESD area.
  • Conductive dividable grid containers for kitted boards and sub-assemblies.
  • Conductive hanging and wall systems, bin carts and wire utility carts.
  • Grounding is your responsibility — the bin is one component of an ESD program, not the program.

Making a stack mobile

There are three ways to move a stack of bins, and they are not interchangeable.

1

Mobile bins (MOB models)

Selected Ultra, MAGNUM, HULK, RackBin and Giant Stack sizes come with four swivel 3″ polyurethane casters, all braked, for up to 250 lb mobile load capacity. The bins still stack with the casters in place. Overall height increases by about 3″.

2

Polymer dollies

DLY-2415 (24″L x 15″W, 1″ ledge, black) and DLY-3018 (30″L x 18″W, padded rubber trim, blue) each run on four 4″ x 1-1/4″ non-marking swivel poly casters with up to 1,000 lb load capacity, and take a HANDLE-DLY 32″ pull rod. An attached pull ring lets the dolly be pulled without stooping.

3

Mobile shelving kits

The WR-00H mobile kit adds four 5″ x 1-1/4″ swivel thermoplastic resin casters (two braked) rated up to 1,200 lb to a wire shelving unit, so the whole bin unit moves. Recommended only for shelves 18″ and deeper.

Complete systems and mounting hardware

A stacking bin is only half a system. Complete packages ship bins and shelving as a matched kit, one bin color per unit, so nothing arrives that does not fit. Wire systems are commonly rated up to 800 lb load capacity per shelf. Louvered panels and rails put the hang-and-stack bins on a wall, on the end of a shelving run, on a partition wall system or on an upright frame, and panel accessories — single and double rods, heavy-duty 6" and 12" spikes rated 65 lb and 50 lb, and horizontal or vertical tape and reel holders rated 25 lb for up to six reels — use the same louvers for the items that do not belong in a bin.

Where this fits with our other pages

If the shelving is the bigger part of the project, start at bin shelving or industrial steel shelving. For open-front bins that live only on shelves, see shelf bins. For returnable containers that travel and come back empty, see the stack-and-nest totes page. Everything is indexed on the industrial storage bins hub.

Industrial applications

Four environments cover most of the stacking bins we ship. The family that wins is decided by part weight and travel distance, not by industry.

How we handle capacities

Bin load capacity, stack capacity and mobile load capacity are three different numbers and they get confused constantly. Bin load capacity is what the bin holds; stack capacity is what the column below it can carry; mobile load capacity is what the caster set is rated for. We quote the published figure for the exact model and we do not average across a family. If a figure is not published for the size you want, we say so rather than estimate.

Stacking bin FAQs

What is the difference between a stacking bin and a hang-and-stack bin?
A stacking bin is designed to form a stable column: reinforced ribs, an extra-wide stacking ledge and an anti-slide stop. A hang-and-stack bin does all of that and adds a full-width hanger on the back so the same bin can hang from a louvered panel or a bin rail. The Ultra Stack & Hang line is the hang-and-stack family; MAGNUM, HULK, RackBin and Giant Stack containers stack and sit on shelving but do not hang from panels.
How much weight can stacking bins hold?
It depends on the family and the size, and there are three separate numbers. Ultra bins carry published bin load capacities of roughly 15 lb to 80 lb depending on size. MAGNUM bins are published at up to 150 lb stack capacity thanks to double-wall construction and an interlocking lip. RackBin containers are published at up to 180 lb maximum capacity per bin. Mobile versions of any family are rated up to 250 lb mobile load capacity on their caster set. We confirm the figure for the exact model on the quote.
Which bin fits 42" deep pallet rack?
RackBin 42" containers. They are 41-7/8" long specifically so a 42" deep bay carries a full-depth container with no wasted depth, in three widths — 16-1/2", 19-7/8" and 23-7/8" — all 17-1/2" high. HULK 30" and 36" containers also work on deep shelving and rack, but they were designed around long-stock shelving rather than a rack bay.
Can stacking bins be made mobile?
Three ways. Selected sizes across the Ultra, MAGNUM, HULK, RackBin and Giant Stack families ship as MOB models on four braked 3" polyurethane swivel casters, up to 250 lb mobile load capacity, and still stack with the casters in place (overall height increases about 3"). Polymer dollies DLY-2415 and DLY-3018 each carry up to 1,000 lb and take a 32" pull rod. And a WR-00H mobile kit, four 5" casters with two brakes rated up to 1,200 lb, mobilises a whole wire shelving bin unit.
Do stacking bins take dividers, windows and lids?
Yes, and they change how the bin behaves. Dividers and cross dividers split a bin into two or four compartments — most Ultra sizes have one divider slot and the wider sizes have three; HULK containers have three slots except the 8-1/4" widths, which have one. Clear window fronts raise usable capacity and stop spillage. Clear lids pivot on holes moulded into the rear of the bin. Clear label holders with laser inserts slide into the front label slot.
What temperatures and chemicals can these bins handle?
Published figures vary by family. MAGNUM bins are published as resisting temperatures from −40°F to 250°F and as impervious to most solvents, corrosion, rust and rot. Ultra bins, HULK containers and stackable bins are published as autoclavable up to 250°F, resistant to extreme cold, waterproof and unaffected by weak acids and alkalis. We will not translate that into a food-contact, sterilisation or certification claim — if your process needs a specific approval, we get it confirmed in writing first.
Are conductive bins the same as ESD-safe bins?
The conductive line is moulded from carbon-filled copolymer polypropylene, and the manufacturer states an electrostatic decay rate under 0.1 second tested by ASTM-D257 methods with surface resistivity below 10⁵ ohms per square. Whether that satisfies your ESD program depends on grounding, workstation design and your own procedures, so we present those numbers as the manufacturer’s and let your ESD coordinator make the call. We supply conductive hang-and-stack bins, shelf bins, dividable grid containers, hanging and wall systems, bin carts and wire utility carts.
Can I hang bins on a wall instead of buying more shelving?
Often, and it is usually cheaper. Louvered panels carry hang-and-stack bins on a wall, on the end of a shelving run, on an upright frame or on a partition wall system, and complete panel-with-bin packages are available in common widths. Panel accessories — single and double rods, 6" and 12" heavy-duty spikes rated 65 lb and 50 lb, and tape or reel holders rated 25 lb for up to six reels — use the same louvers for items that do not belong in a bin.
Do you supply complete bin and shelving packages?
Yes. Wire and steel packages ship as matched kits with posts, shelves and a specified bin count and size included, one bin color per unit, commonly rated up to 800 lb per shelf on wire systems. Giant Stack wire packages come in 18"W × 36"L × 74"H and 18"W × 42"L × 74"H five-shelf configurations. Buying the kit removes the risk of ordering containers that do not fit the shelf you already bought.
How do I get a quote and how fast can bins ship?
Call (800) 326-4403 or request a quote with the shelf, bench or rack dimensions and a rough idea of part weight and size. Common bin sizes and colors move quickly from stock; specialty colors, mobile versions and large project quantities depend on current availability, so we confirm lead time in writing with the quote rather than guessing.

Get the stacking bin mix right the first time

Send us the part weight, the longest part and where the bins have to live — bench, shelf, wall, pallet rack or cart. We will size the families and quantities and quote bins, panels, shelving and mobility as one package.
