Vidir VLM Mini for Pharmacies and Hospitals: Compact Vertical Lift Module

A vertical lift module scaled down for healthcare rooms with ordinary ceilings. The VLM Mini stores supplies on trays inside a locked tower under 10 ft tall and brings the tray you call to waist height, with user log-in and an access record for every opening.

When the VLM Mini Fits and When the Full VLM Does

Tray tower inside a full-size Vidir VLM, the platform the VLM Mini is based on, showing variable spacing between stored trays

A vertical lift module is a tall enclosed tower with trays stored on both sides of a central lift. Ask for an item and the lift pulls its tray and presents it at an opening. Vidir’s full-size machine, covered on our Vidir vertical lift module page, is built for warehouses, plants and large storerooms: it grows to fill tall buildings and is sized for heavy, wide trays.

The VLM Mini takes the same platform and shrinks it for rooms that never had that height. Vidir describes it as under 10 ft tall with a footprint of roughly 20 sq ft, aimed at pharmacies, hospitals, clinics and laboratories where ceilings are low and floor is tight. Vidir has not published a full specification sheet for the Mini on its product page, so tray sizes, tray count and capacities are confirmed on your quote rather than listed here.

Vidir VLM Mini (Healthcare) Full-size Vidir VLM
Where it goes Pharmacies, clinics, hospital supply rooms, labs Warehouses, plants, MRO and parts rooms
Height Under 10 ft overall (Vidir) Built tall to use high ceilings; see the VLM page for models
Footprint About 20 sq ft (Vidir) Larger tower sized for full-width trays
Typical items Boxed supplies, kits, small packs, medication stock Parts, tools, components, heavier stock
Access control Locking door, user authentication, audit logs Optional badge reader, software permissions
Specifications Confirmed per quote Published on our Vidir VLM page

A simple rule of thumb: if the room has a standard drop ceiling and the stock is small and boxed, start with the Mini. If you have clear height to spare, heavy items or a very large item count, the full VLM is the better fit. Our vertical lift modules guide compares VLMs from every angle, and the vertical lifts hub covers the rest of the lift family.

How the VLM Mini Works

1

The user authenticates at the control before the machine will deliver a tray.

2

Request

Pick an item, scan a bar code or work from a list; the software knows which tray holds it.

3

Deliver

The lift extracts the tray and presents it at waist height. Vidir cites an average of about 30 seconds.

4

Pick and confirm

Pick-to-light marks the position on the tray and a scan confirms the item before the tray returns.

The point of the design is that staff stay at one station while the machine does the walking and reaching. A technician can keep working at the counter while the next tray is on its way, and nobody climbs a step stool for stock on a top shelf because there is no top shelf to reach.

The access opening on Vidir’s lifts is guarded by light curtains, shown here on the full-size VLM, so the lift does not move while hands are in the opening. Your facility’s own safety and training procedures still apply to how staff use it.

What Facilities Store in a VLM Mini

Vidir positions the Mini for both clinical stock and general operating supplies. Its own examples range from surgical kits, gloves and syringes to medication. Trays are laid out with adjustable dividers so each tray can hold a mix of small packs and larger boxes.

💊

Pharmacy stock

Boxed medication and overstock kept behind a locked door, delivered one tray at a time.

🧰

Procedure kits

Pre-packed kits grouped on trays by department or procedure type.

🧤

Consumables

Gloves, syringes and other high-use items in divided tray compartments.

🔬

Lab supplies

Small boxed lab consumables in labs with low ceilings, which Vidir also names as a fit.

What goes in the machine, and under what conditions, is your facility’s call. Temperature, humidity, segregation and handling requirements for medication and medical supplies come from your pharmacy, your infection prevention team and the regulators and authority having jurisdiction for your building. We configure trays, dividers and access levels around the rules you give us; we do not decide what those rules are.

For the full range of pharmacy storage we supply, including options that sit outside an automated machine, see our vertical storage for pharmacy and pharmaceutical section.

Access Control and Traceability

Access control is the feature Vidir leads with for healthcare, and it is built from four physical and software pieces:

  • Locking door on the access opening, so stock cannot be reached when no one is logged in.
  • User authentication before a tray is delivered.
  • Managed tray access with customizable access levels, so a user only calls the trays they are permitted to open.
  • Audit logs that record who accessed which tray and when.

Who decides if it meets your policy

Vidir markets these features for secure medication storage. Whether a VLM Mini, with your chosen settings, satisfies a specific controlled-substance, accreditation or state requirement is a decision for your pharmacy leadership, compliance staff and regulators. We will supply Vidir’s documentation for that review.

VLM Mini vs. Static Supply Room Shelving

Most VLM Mini projects replace a wall of static shelving or a crowded storeroom. Shelving is inexpensive and easy to restock, and for a small room with a light item count it is often the right answer. The Mini earns its place where stock has outgrown the room, where items need to be locked away, or where staff spend time searching and reaching.

If your stock is too large for trays, our healthcare section also covers high-density mobile shelving and other non-automated options on the hospital and healthcare vertical storage page.

Other Vidir Machines for Healthcare

Vidir builds two other healthcare machines, and many hospitals use more than one. The Vidir Medical Supplies Carousel rotates whole shelves of boxed consumables on a loop and suits wide runs of supplies, and the Vidir Hospital Bedlift stores beds vertically to clear corridors.

Planning a VLM Mini Project

  • Item list. What will be stored, package sizes and rough counts, so tray layout and divider spacing can be set.
  • Room. Ceiling height, floor area at the chosen spot, and space in front of the opening for staff and a cart.
  • Power and network. Available electrical service and whether the software connects to your inventory or pharmacy system.
  • Users and access levels. Who logs in, which trays each role can open, and who reviews the audit log.
  • Facility review. Floor loading, fire protection, cleaning and infection-prevention requirements set by your facility team and the authority having jurisdiction.
  • Delivery path. Doors, elevators and corridors from the dock to the room.

VLM Mini FAQs

What is the Vidir VLM Mini?
It is a compact vertical lift module built on Vidir’s VLM platform for pharmacies, hospitals, clinics and labs. Supplies are stored on trays in a locked tower under 10 ft tall, and the lift delivers the requested tray to waist height.
How is it different from Vidir’s full-size VLM?
The full VLM is built for tall warehouses and plant storerooms with large, heavy trays. The Mini is sized for rooms with ordinary ceilings and a footprint Vidir puts at roughly 20 sq ft. Tray sizes and capacities for the Mini are confirmed on the quote.
How fast does it deliver a tray?
Vidir cites an average of about 30 seconds to bring a requested tray to the opening. Actual timing depends on the configuration and tray position.
Can it restrict access to medication?
It has a locking door, user authentication, managed tray access levels and audit logs. Whether that setup meets a specific medication-storage or accreditation requirement is decided by your pharmacy, compliance staff and regulators.
Does it work with bar codes and pick-to-light?
Yes. Vidir lists pick-to-light guidance and bar code verification as part of how the Mini is used.
Is the VLM Mini a carousel?
No. A carousel rotates shelves on a loop. The VLM Mini stores trays in a tower and extracts one tray at a time. Vidir’s Medical Supplies Carousel is the carousel option for healthcare.
What does a VLM Mini cost?
Every unit is quoted from your room, item list, software and installation scope. Call 800-326-4403 to start.
