Vidir VLM: Vertical Lift Module with Height-Sensing Trays

The Vidir VLM stores parts on trays in two enclosed towers and brings the tray you call to a waist-height opening. Laser height sensors measure every load, so trays are stored in roughly 1.2-inch steps and almost no space is wasted. Specs, all 33 standard models, software, the Vidir VLM app and options are below.

What Is the Vidir VLM?

A vertical lift module (VLM) is an automated storage machine. Inventory sits on steel trays in two columns, one tower at the front and one at the back, with an elevator running up the middle. When an operator asks for a part, the elevator pulls that tray out of its slot, carries it down and presents it at an access opening at waist height. The operator picks or stocks, sends the tray back, and the machine files it away again.

The Vidir VLM is Vidir’s version of that machine. Vidir is the Manitoba manufacturer best known for vertical carousels; it designs and builds the VLM in Canada and sells it in the U.S. through dealers. Material Handling USA is an authorized Vidir dealer, so we size, quote, deliver and coordinate installation of Vidir VLMs nationwide, and support them afterwards.

Most VLM buyers come to us with the same three problems: a stockroom of shelving that keeps growing, pickers who spend more time walking and searching than picking, and inventory that is hard to secure or count. A VLM answers all three by moving the inventory to the person, using the building’s height instead of its floor, and putting every tray behind a login. If you are still deciding between machine types, our vertical lift modules guide covers VLMs from every manufacturer, and the vertical lifts page covers bar stock, sheet metal and equipment lifts.

How the Vidir VLM Works: Height Sensing and Variable Tray Spacing

Tray tower inside a Vidir VLM showing trays stored at different heights with variable spacing

Height sensing is what separates a VLM from a carousel or a cabinet of shelves. As a loaded tray is drawn back onto the elevator, Vidir’s laser height sensors read the tallest item on it. The controller then works out the tightest open slot that tray will fit in, in either tower, and stores it there.

Because the tower rails support trays at many positions, Vidir lists a storage increment of about 1.2 inches. A tray of flat gaskets takes a thin slot; a tray of fixtures up to 30 inches tall takes a tall one. On fixed shelving the gap above short items is simply lost, and that is where most of the density gain comes from. Vidir describes the result as three to four times more inventory in the same footprint as standard shelving.

1

Request

The operator calls a tray by part number, tray ID or pick list on the 12-inch touchscreen or connected software.

2

Extract

The servo-driven elevator travels to the tray, pulls it out of the front or rear tower and carries it down.

3

Present

The tray arrives at the access opening at working height, behind a light curtain.

4

Pick or stock

The operator picks or loads, confirms the transaction and sends the tray back.

5

Measure and store

Height sensors read the load and the machine files the tray in the most efficient free slot.

The part doing the work is the extractor, the carriage that rides the elevator and slides trays on and off the tower rails. Vidir drives it with a 10 HP vertical servo motor and a 2 HP horizontal servo motor on a chain drive. Vidir’s current product page lists a maximum vertical speed of 2.3 ft per second and a horizontal feed of 0.83 ft per second; an earlier sales package listed 1.67 ft per second vertical, so confirm the figure for the revision on your quote.

Real pick rates depend on machine height, where trays sit and how the inventory is slotted, so we do not quote picks per hour until a machine has been configured for your item list.

Before: static shelving across the floor (Vidir illustration)

After: the same stock in one Vidir VLM (Vidir illustration)

Vidir publishes floor savings of up to 85% compared with open shelving or conventional racking, and gives the example of 1,000 sq ft of shelving consolidating into roughly 150 to 200 sq ft of VLM. Your own number depends on ceiling height, item sizes and how full your current shelving really is, which is why we model it from your item list before quoting. The floor you get back usually goes to production, staging or a second process instead of a building expansion.

📏

Floor recovered

A standard Vidir VLM tower sits on about 9 ft 9 in by 9 ft 7 in and can rise to 28 ft 6 in.

🚶

No aisle walking

The tray comes to the operator, so one person works from one station instead of walking rows.

🔒

Controlled access

Inventory sits inside a full enclosure; trays open only at the access point, for logged-in users.

Counted inventory

Every pick and stock is a confirmed transaction, so on-hand counts follow the work instead of a clipboard.

Vidir VLM Specifications

The standard package below is what Vidir lists on its current VLM product page. Every standard model is the “3296” frame: trays 96 inches wide by 32.5 inches deep, items up to 30 inches tall, and the same tower footprint regardless of height. Height sets the tray count, which is why the model numbers run from VLM118 to VLM342.

Vidir’s 2025 brochure also lists wider and shallower builds: tray widths of 96, 120 or 144 inches, tray depths of 25.5 or 32.5 inches, tray pitch options and trays rated up to 1,500 lb. Those are configured to order, so we confirm them on the quote rather than list them as standard.

All 33 Standard Vidir VLM Models

Row of three Vidir vertical lift modules using the full clear height of a tall building

Pick the tallest model your clear height allows. Every model below shares the 9 ft 9 in by 9 ft 7 in tower, so going taller adds trays and storage volume without adding floor. Model numbers step up about 7 inches at a time, adding four trays per step.

Clear height is measured to the lowest obstruction above the machine: sprinkler heads, lights, ducts, joists or a door header on the way in. Several units can stand side by side when one machine is not enough. Don’t see a height that works? Vidir invites requests for sizes outside this list, and we can ask on your behalf.

Vidir VLM Software, Inventory Control and the Vidir VLM App

Every VLM runs auto retrieval tray control from its 12-inch touchscreen. On top of that, Vidir offers its inventory control software. Older literature calls it the Full Inventory Control System (VIP). Vidir’s current software platform, presented on its Vidir OS page as Vidir Vantage, is built around six capabilities: complete inventory control, guided pick and stock, machine control, diagnostics and alarms, security and access control, and ERP/WMS integration.

In practice that means items are tracked down to the tray position and the location on the tray. Pick and stock lists can be built by scanning bar codes. A tray visualizer shows the operator which cell to pick from, and every transaction is confirmed before the next one starts, which leaves a timestamped audit trail.

  • ERP and WMS integration: Vidir says the VLM connects to major platforms through standard API connections, and its software team confirms compatibility with your system before installation.
  • Reports and counts: transaction history and real-time inventory counts, run from a connected PC.
  • Vidir Remote Service: software assistance, troubleshooting and training by remote access.
  • Data backup and auto learning: faster setup and easier resets after maintenance.
  • Power-saving eco mode: reduces energy use while the machine is idle.

The Vidir VLM app

Vidir publishes a Vidir VLM app for iOS (Apple App Store) and Android (Google Play). The download links are on Vidir’s app page. Ask us which app and software features apply to the machine and software package on your quote, since they vary by configuration.

Vidir VLM Options and Accessories

Safety, Reliability and Service

Vidir VLM access opening with light curtain beams across the tray presentation area

The access opening is guarded by light curtains, which are part of the standard package. The rest of the machine sits inside a full enclosure, so nothing is reachable except the presented tray. Because everything arrives at waist height, operators stop climbing ladders, bending to floor shelves and reaching overhead. Vidir points out that these are the most common causes of warehouse injuries.

Vidir lists dual redundant DC power to keep the machine working through a power supply failure, a seismic ready design and the cCSAus mark.

Maintenance is planned for. Vidir builds the VLM with front-facing maintenance access, so a technician can service it without moving it or shutting down the machines beside it. The lift runs on a chain drive Vidir chose for durability. Through its partnership with Schneider Electric, Vidir standardizes components so replacement parts are easier to source.

Material Handling USA coordinates delivery and installation, and afterwards handles parts and service requests. See vertical storage installation services for what an installation involves and Vidir parts and service support to request parts or a service visit.

Vidir VLM vs. Vertical Carousel vs. Shelving

Vidir builds both VLMs and vertical carousels, so the choice comes down to your items rather than the brand. A carousel rotates fixed shelves on a loop, which suits uniform items in one size range. A VLM stores trays independently and measures each one, which suits mixed sizes and heavier parts. Our vertical carousel vs. vertical lift module guide goes deeper, and the Kardex Remstar vs. Vidir comparison covers the most common brand question.
