Elevate Your Storage Solutions

The Vidir Vertical Lift for Bar Stock is more than just a storage solution; it’s a game-changer for industrial environments. Our high-capacity automated storage system increases material throughput, workplace efficiency, and most importantly, safety. The system features an elevator that smoothly climbs the tower to deposit and retrieve cartridges, ensuring a continuous material flow with minimal changeover times.

Dual-Tower Bar Stock VLS: More Positions, One Machine

Vidir’s newest bar stock lift pairs two storage towers with one central elevator. It is built for fabricators who have outgrown a single tower but still want one loading station and one control system.

How the dual-tower layout works

The single-tower Bar Stock VLS stacks carriers in one tower and tops out at 25 storage positions. The dual-tower model puts a storage tower on each side of a central elevator. The elevator pulls the requested carrier from either tower and lowers it to a loading platform at floor level, so the operator still works at one spot while the machine holds roughly twice as many carriers.

Vidir lists up to 49 positions with 10-inch carriers, each rated to 5,000 lb. That is how the largest configuration reaches about 245,000 lb of bar, pipe and tube on roughly 236 square feet of floor. Support ribs every 2 feet and divider pins split a carrier lengthwise, so several sizes or alloys can share a position without restacking.

When two towers beat one, and when they don’t

Dual tower is worth pricing when you need more than 25 stock positions, you are replacing several cantilever bays and their forklift aisles, or you carry a wide mix of alloys, diameters and profiles that each need their own carrier. You also get one machine, one control system and one service contract instead of two separate towers.

A single tower is usually enough when your stock list fits in 25 positions or the ceiling is low. If the count is small or the budget will not support automation, a conventional cantilever rack is often the better value, and we will tell you so.

What we need to size a dual-tower system

  • Clear height to the lowest overhead obstruction (towers run 10 to 30 ft)
  • Stock lengths you hold and roughly what share of inventory each represents
  • Heaviest bundle and total weight to be stored (5,000 lb per carrier)
  • Positions needed today and in the next 3 to 5 years
  • 480V, 3-phase, 30 A power near the install location
  • A network connection for Vidir’s remote service link
  • Loading side: standard platform or the optional front cart, and where the control station goes
  • The saw or machining center the system will feed

The standard dual-tower package includes the controls (left- or right-mounted, with extra stations supported), the ground-level loading platform, safety light curtains, remote service connection and Vidir’s control software. Systems are built to order and quoted per project. The video earlier on this page shows the single-tower Bar Stock VLS at work; the dual-tower model brings material down to the operator the same way.

Not sure if you need one tower or two? Send us your stock list, lengths and ceiling height. We will lay out both options and show the floor space each one frees up. Storing flat sheet instead? See the Dual-Tower Sheet Metal VLS. See all vertical lift systems or the full Vidir lineup.

Scoping a Bar Stock Vertical Lift: Length, Weight and Budget Come First

Bar and tube stock is awkward to store because of its length, and the vertical lift only pays off when the machine matches the material. Fabricators, machine shops and metal service centers who send us these details get a straight answer quickly, including when an automated lift is not the right fit:

  • Stock lengths and how much of each. List the lengths you hold and roughly what share of inventory each represents. Standard machine widths accommodate common stock lengths; if a portion of your stock is longer than the standard maximum, tell us up front so we can confirm whether a current model handles it or whether that material should stay on a conventional rack.
  • Weight per bundle and total load. Heaviest bundle, typical bundle, and the total weight you want stored. This determines carrier configuration and whether a single tower or a dual-tower arrangement makes sense.
  • Loading method. How stock arrives and moves to the saw or machine center. Cart or forklift loading changes the access requirements and the options on the quote.
  • Ceiling height and footprint. Height to the lowest overhead obstruction and the floor area available, including clearance for the loading side.
  • Budget expectations. Automated bar stock lifts are a significant investment. If the budget is tight, ask about non-automated vertical or cantilever alternatives; we sell those too and will say so when they are the better value.
  • Power, installation and training. Confirm the electrical requirement for the model on your quote, and ask what installation, commissioning and operator training are included.

FAQs

Steel bar stock refers to long, solid bars of steel used in construction, manufacturing, and other applications.

Bar stock weight varies based on size and material, typically ranging from 10 to 130 pounds per foot.

Yes, there are shelving systems specifically designed for organizing and securing bar stock.

Yes, automated systems featuring robotics and automation technology can handle bar stock with precision and speed.

Yes, bar stock should be stored in a cool, dry location away from heat and moisture, and regularly inspected for damage.

Both deliver bar stock to the operator at floor level. The single tower holds up to 25 storage positions. The dual tower places two storage towers around one central elevator and holds up to 49 positions with 10-inch carriers, 37 with 14-inch and 29 with 18-inch, so it suits shops that would otherwise need two machines or several static racks.

Each carrier is rated to 5,000 lb and handles stock 10 to 24 feet long. Vidir lists the largest configuration at about 245,000 lb across 49 positions in roughly 236 square feet. Your actual capacity depends on carrier height, tower height and how the stock is divided inside each carrier.

Plan for 480V, 3-phase, 30 A power, enough clear height for a 10 to 30 ft tower, a network connection for remote service, and room on the loading side for the platform or optional front cart. We confirm these on the layout before the quote is final.
