Merchandise Vending Machine for Retail Stores and Sports Team Shops
The Vidir Merchandise Vending Machine is an automated vertical lift system that stores apparel, caps and accessories in a small footprint and brings a paid-for order to the pickup opening in under 45 seconds. Retailers use it for online and in-store pickup; athletic programs use the sports version for game-day merch.

What the Vidir Merchandise Vending Machine Is
Most people hear “vending machine” and picture a glass-front snack box with spiral coils. Vidir’s machine is a different animal. It is an automated storage and retrieval system that borrows the mechanics of Vidir’s Vertical Lift Module: a tall, enclosed tower full of trays, an elevator-mounted extractor in the middle, and one opening at counter height where a tray is presented. Instead of machine parts or tooling, the trays hold merchandise: folded shirts and hoodies, caps, jerseys, accessories and boxed memorabilia.
When an order is ready to hand over, the machine fetches the tray that holds it and slides it to the opening. The customer, fan or a single associate takes the item and the tray goes back into the tower. Because product is stacked vertically rather than spread across tables, shelving and back-room racks, Vidir says a full pickup point can run in as little as 22 square feet of floor, and that operators can gain up to 85% more space for product compared with how they stored it before.
Vidir sells the same platform under two names. The Merchandise Vending Machine is pitched to retailers; the Sports Merchandise Vending Machine is pitched to athletic programs, arenas and team stores. The copy, the published figures and the product videos are the same; what changes is the setting and the merchandise mix. We explain both buyers on this one page instead of splitting them, so you can see which setup fits your counter.

It sits alongside the rest of the automated storage family on our Vidir automated storage hub, which covers carousels, lifts and the specialty machines Vidir builds for specific industries.
How Automated Merchandise Pickup Works
The workflow is short, and that is the point. Vidir describes two ways to run it: let the buyer self-serve, or keep one associate at the opening who handles every customer. Either way the steps look like this:
Sale happens first
The item is bought online, on an app or at a register. Vidir positions the machine for pre-purchased pickup, not open browsing.
Order is called
The associate selects the order, or the buyer identifies their order at the machine, and the control system finds the tray.
Tray comes to the opening
The extractor rides the lift to that tray and delivers it to the pickup opening. Vidir cites under 45 seconds for any item.
Hand-off and return
The item is removed, the tray returns to storage and the inventory record updates for the next order.

Why it is fast. In a traditional back room, an associate walks to a shelf, searches, climbs and walks back. In the machine, the trip is made by the lift while the associate stays put. Vidir notes that the machine can be retrieving the product while the associate is still completing the transaction, so the order is often waiting by the time the payment clears. Retrieval for any item is quoted at under 45 seconds, and Vidir says some items come out in about 15 seconds.
Why it is secure. Stock sits inside an enclosed tower rather than on open tables or racks, and only the presented tray is reachable. Vidir frames this as tighter accountability and lower shrinkage, because every movement in and out is logged by the system.
The platform underneath. Because the machine is built on Vidir’s VLM engineering, it shares the familiar layout of a vertical lift: trays stored front and back, an extractor in the center column and a single access opening with its controls beside it. If you already know Vidir’s vertical lift modules, this is the same idea pointed at a sales counter instead of a stockroom. Our general guide to vertical lift systems explains how these machines are sized by height and tray count.
The machine is operated through an HMI touchscreen interface. Vidir does not publish separate tray dimensions or tray weight ratings for the merchandise version, so we confirm the tray layout for your product mix on the quote rather than guess.

For Retailers: Automated Pickup Without the Back-Room Hunt
Retail pickup has a space problem and a labor problem at the same time. Online orders pile up on shelving behind the counter, associates leave the floor to find them, and lines form at the exact moment the store is busiest. Vidir aims its retail Merchandise Vending Machine squarely at that gap, describing it as engineered for retail operations and able to store a wide range of goods, from apparel to accessories.
Good retail fits include apparel and footwear stores with heavy online pickup, college and campus bookstores, outdoor and specialty shops, and branded flagship stores that want pickup to feel like part of the experience instead of a hallway of boxes. If your pickup volume is mostly mixed parcels in totes or bags rather than retail merchandise, look at our BOPIS order pickup carousel, which uses Vidir’s pan and shelf carousels to stage bagged online orders behind the counter. For more retail layouts, see vertical storage for retail and distribution.
For Athletic Programs: The Sports Merchandise Vending Machine
Game day is the retail problem compressed into a few hours. Fans want a jersey or a cap between whistles, merch tables get crowded, and every minute in line is a minute a fan is not buying. Vidir’s sports version is described in its brochure as an automated vertical lift module designed to store and dispense merchandise for athletic programs, and Vidir calls it game-day ready.
The pitch is to replace cluttered merch tables and long pickup lines with an organized tower. Fans can buy online or on site and then collect at the machine, either serving themselves or through one associate. Vidir highlights that the small footprint frees up concourse, locker room or event-floor space, and that the trays can be configured for jerseys, hats and core memorabilia.
Likely buyers are college and university athletic departments, professional and minor-league teams, arena and stadium retail operators, and campus team stores that also run event-day pop-ups.

Do not confuse it with the Vidir Sports Equipment Storage Lift. The equipment lift stores a team’s own gear trunks, pads and bags for staff and players; the vending machine sells and hands out fan merchandise to the public. Many athletic departments could use both, but they solve different problems for different people.

Inventory Control, Reporting and Loss Prevention

A merch operation lives or dies on knowing what is on hand. Vidir builds inventory tools into the machine so operators can see in real time what is stocked, what has sold and what needs replenishing, which helps avoid the lost sale that happens when the popular size runs out unnoticed.
The HMI is designed to connect with existing ERP systems, so the machine can track movement and produce reports alongside the rest of your sales data. Vidir also lists remote diagnostics, which lets performance be monitored and tuned without waiting for someone to notice a problem on site.
Loss prevention is the other half. Because product is enclosed and every pick is logged, Vidir positions the machine as a way to reduce shrinkage and improve accountability compared with open shelving or a merch table.
- Real-time view of stocked, sold and low items
- HMI that integrates with existing ERP systems
- Movement tracking and detailed reports
- Remote diagnostics for monitoring performance
- Enclosed storage with logged access to reduce shrinkage
How It Compares With Other Automated Options
Several products on our site automate a hand-off. They answer different questions, so it helps to be clear about which one you are shopping for:
| Option | Best for | How it hands off |
|---|---|---|
| Vidir Merchandise Vending Machine | Selling and handing out retail or fan merchandise in a small footprint | Lift presents a tray of merchandise at one opening |
| Vidir BOPIS pickup carousel | Staging bagged or boxed online orders behind a counter | Carousel rotates the order shelf to the associate |
| Smart lockers | Unattended 24/7 parcel or package pickup by code | Customer opens an assigned locker door |
| Industrial vending machines | Tool, PPE and MRO consumables for employees | Badge-controlled dispensing with usage tracking |
| Vidir bicycle merchandising system | Displaying and storing bikes on the sales floor | Powered display levels lower bikes to the customer |
For tool and PPE dispensing to employees, see our industrial vending machines page; that is a workplace supply-control product, not a retail one. And if you want lockers customers open themselves around the clock, our smart locker systems page is the better starting point.
