About the project
This project supplied mobile shelving to the Utah Department of Health for medical supply storage across three separate rooms in a Taylorsville, Utah facility. The initial order closed in May 2023, with a follow-on change order later that year adding aisle ties and adjusted shelf widths as the department’s inventory needs became clearer.
Material Handling USA supplied a mobile shelving system purchased on the Utah state cooperative purchasing contract, a route many Utah state and local agencies use to buy equipment without running a separate bid process for every purchase.
The situation
A state health department manages a wide range of medical supplies across multiple programs, from testing kits and personal protective equipment to general medical and office stock. Keeping that inventory organized takes real shelf space, and government office buildings rarely have a storage room built with that volume in mind.
The department needed more medical supply storage capacity across three separate rooms without expanding the building. Static shelving on fixed aisles was already using a large share of each room just for walkways between the rows, leaving less floor space for the shelving itself.
Because the rooms were in an existing, occupied building, the project also needed a shelving system that could go in without a major floor construction phase in each room.

What Material Handling USA supplied
We supplied mobile shelving systems sized to each of the three rooms, purchased on the Utah state cooperative contract, with a later change order to fine-tune shelf widths and add aisle ties.
The mobile shelving components are part of the same product family covered on our recessed vs. surface-mounted rail and cooperative contract purchasing pages.
Buying on the Utah state cooperative contract
State and local government agencies often buy equipment through a cooperative purchasing contract rather than running a separate bid for every project. A cooperative contract has already been competitively bid and awarded, so an agency can order against it directly, which saves time on a project like this one.
The Utah Department of Health’s mobile shelving order was placed against a Utah state contract, with pricing and terms already established. That let the department move from approved need to an installed system without a separate procurement cycle for the shelving itself.
We work with a number of Utah state and local agencies through this same purchasing path. See our cooperative contract purchasing page for how it applies to a mobile shelving project.

Three rooms, one system standard
Fitting three separate rooms with mobile shelving is a different project than fitting one. Each room had its own footprint, door locations and existing layout, but all three needed to work toward the same goal: more medical supply storage capacity without more square footage.
Rather than design three unrelated systems, the project used a consistent shelving standard across all three rooms, sized to each room’s footprint. That kept ordering, maintenance and future expansion simpler for the department, since staff moving between rooms see the same type of system.
The later change order shows this in practice. Once the department had lived with the shelving for several months, adjustments to shelf width and the addition of aisle ties refined the system based on how supplies were actually being stored, room by room.
Benefits the department gained
More capacity across three rooms. Sharing one moving aisle per room turned limited storage space into meaningfully more medical supply capacity without any change to the building.
Simplified purchasing. Buying on the Utah state cooperative contract let the department move from need to installed shelving without a separate bid process.
A system that could be refined. The change order shows the shelving could be adjusted after the fact as the department’s actual storage patterns became clear.
Consistency across locations. Using the same shelving standard in all three rooms keeps training, maintenance and future orders simpler for department staff.
Room to grow. The mobile shelving layout leaves a path to add sections later as supply volume changes.

How the project ran
The sequence on this project matches most government agency mobile shelving installs we run.

Serving Utah state and local agencies
Material Handling USA has served Utah state and local government agencies since 1997 from Salt Lake City, including this medical supply storage project for the Utah Department of Health in Taylorsville. Government facilities across the Wasatch Front run into the same problem: storage rooms are rarely sized for the volume of supplies and records an agency accumulates over time.
Mobile shelving is often the most direct fix, and buying on a state cooperative contract keeps the purchasing process simple for the agency. We work the same way with departments in Salt Lake City, West Jordan, Ogden and across the state.
