Pallet Rack Uprights
Specify pallet rack upright frames by dimensions, component identity and the load configuration—not paint color or shipping weight. Get practical help matching replacements or planning a new rack run.

Upright Frame or Individual Post: Specify the Unit
Pallet rack uprights support the beam levels in a rack system. Buyers often use “upright,” “frame” and “post” interchangeably, which can make a replacement request unclear. A post or column is one vertical member. A typical upright frame combines front and rear columns, horizontal and diagonal bracing, and base plates.
Ask what the quoted item includes: a complete frame, an individual replacement component, or an assembly supplied in separate pieces. Confirm whether assembly, connection hardware and anchoring are included. The unit description matters as much as the quantity; two individual columns are not automatically a complete frame ready to install.
For delivery planning, request the packaged dimensions, piece count and shipping weight of the quoted items. Confirm who will unload and assemble them, and what handling equipment the shipment requires. Those freight details should remain separate from the structural capacity documentation.
| Specify on the request | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Complete upright frame or individual component | Prevents a frame count being interpreted as a post count. |
| Height, depth and measurement endpoints | Avoids confusing overall dimensions with an inside opening or nominal catalog size. |
| New run, added bay or damaged replacement | Determines what existing layout and component records need review. |
Adjacent bays may share a frame, so do not multiply a stand-alone bay parts list without checking the actual run layout. For a new system, have the frame count coordinated with the beam levels and approved arrangement. For replacement work, identify the specific affected location rather than ordering by a general warehouse count.
For catalog frame options, see Interlake Pallet Rack Uprights; select the required variant and confirm the specification before ordering.
Measure and Identify the Frame You Need

Start with original purchase records, manufacturer labels, model numbers and Load Application and Rack Configuration (LARC) drawings if available. Photos and measurements help narrow an identification, but are not permission to combine components. Older installations may contain different product generations or undocumented substitutions.
- Overall frame height and depth, with a sketch showing exactly where each measurement starts and ends.
- Column face and side profile, hole shape/pattern, and any readable manufacturer or part markings.
- Horizontal and diagonal brace arrangement, base plates and existing beam connectors.
- Current beam elevations, load labels and any visible damage or prior modifications.
Collect information only from a safe, accessible position. Do not climb the rack, remove loaded components, or enter an isolated area to obtain measurements. Mark unavailable details as unknown and arrange the appropriate on-site review instead of guessing.
A shared brand name or teardrop hole shape does not establish interchangeability. Confirm the exact frame, beam and locking-hardware combination through the manufacturer and the appropriate rack design professional. The identification and compatibility guide provides a structured intake list; our beam guide explains individual-versus-pair quantities.
Frame Capacity, Shipping Weight and Anchorage

Shipping weight is not load capacity. Shipping weight describes the item being handled and transported. A frame’s load rating depends on its design and the system configuration. A heavier-looking or taller upright is not automatically suitable for a larger load.
Provide the maximum loaded pallet weight—including the pallet or container—plus load dimensions, support/contact details and intended beam elevations. Distinguish a per-pallet weight from the load on a beam level and the load in the whole bay. Do not transfer a generic web-page capacity to an unidentified frame.
RMI’s reconfiguration guidance explains that vertical beam spacing and loading affect frame capacity. Adding levels or moving beams therefore needs the original configuration records and licensed-engineer review of the proposed changes, not just a check that the connectors enter the holes.
Anchoring also belongs to the specific system and site. Base-plate geometry, specified anchors, slab conditions and applicable design requirements need coordination. The number of visible holes in a plate does not tell the installer which anchors to select or where every hole should be used. See anchor bolts and base plates for the information to confirm before installation.
Replacement Frames and Nonstandard Sizes
If your required height or depth differs from available catalog choices, ask about a correctly specified frame or an approved project-specific option. Cutting an upright is not a routine sizing shortcut. Any cutting, welding, drilling, straightening or other alteration needs manufacturer and rack design-professional approval for the exact system, with the resulting documentation and installation requirements addressed.
Damage is a separate decision from ordinary customization. If damage is found, isolate the affected area and have a storage rack design professional evaluate it. Unloading, repair or replacement should follow that professional’s direction. A similar-looking frame or a freshly painted part is not evidence that the replacement preserves the system’s design.
RMI describes the review behind repairing or replacing damaged components. MH-USA’s repair and inspection page explains the intake process. For purchasing decisions, compare used and new rack by verified condition, documentation and complete installed cost—not age alone.
