Panels or Barricades: Which Rigid Barrier Fits the Job?

Belts and ropes are fine for a polite line. They stop working when people start ducking under, stepping over or leaning on the barrier, when the line has to stay put for weeks, or when the boundary has to carry a message. That is where rigid barriers come in. Visiontron makes two very different kinds, and picking the right one first saves money.

Rigid queue panels (indoor and covered outdoor) →

Framed panels between stanchion posts. Q-PANEL systems slide onto compatible RETRACTA-BELT® posts and turn a queue into a fixed lane that cannot be ducked. Every panel is also a sign surface. Best for checkpoints, check-in halls, banks and attractions.

Beam lines (open but rigid) →

An aluminum beam instead of a belt. Q-BEAM and Q-PANEL Top Beam lines keep sightlines open while giving the queue a stronger, straighter edge than a belt. A lower-cost step up from belts.

Q-PANEL® Rigid Queue Panel Systems

Q-PANEL is Visiontron’s post-and-panel system: an aluminum frame holding an insert, attached to compatible single- or dual-line RETRACTA-BELT posts. You can add panels to a suitable existing belt queue or buy posts and panels together as a complete system. There are three main frame families, and the difference is mostly about how often you change the graphics and how much abuse the line takes.

Heavy Duty Q-PANEL (PNL series)

The strongest panel: a heavy-gauge aluminum, square-corner frame with tamper-resistant insert retention. Seven standard frame sizes: 48 x 26, 48 x 34, 72 x 26, 72 x 34, 92 x 26 and 92 x 34 in., plus a 48 x 66 in. privacy panel. Frames come in black anodized or satin aluminum, and both are outdoor-ready. The smallest panel weighs 17 lb with a 1/4 in. Sintra insert.

Pick this for airport checkpoints, stadium gates and any line that stays up for months. Inserts come in black or white Sintra, clear or frosted acrylic, or a two-piece clear acrylic sandwich that holds a paper sign. Backed by a 10-year limited warranty.

Designer Series Q-PANEL (PNLDS series)

A lighter frame with rounded corners and a concealed hinged top. Staff lift the top bar and slide a new insert through the track without taking the panel off its posts. An optional lock keeps the public out of the insert. Four standard sizes (48 x 24.5, 48 x 32.5, 72 x 24.5 and 72 x 32.5 in.) in smooth black, polished aluminum or polished brass aluminum. The smallest panel weighs 11 lb.

Pick this when the message changes often: promotions at a retail queue, sponsor graphics at a venue, or seasonal wayfinding. Also a 10-year limited warranty.

ECO Series Q-PANEL

ECO frames use less aluminum than the Heavy Duty frame and come in eight standard sizes, with an optional hinged top. They work with select Visiontron single- and dual-line posts and with appropriate Lavi Beltrac posts, so a facility can often upgrade an existing queue instead of replacing it. ECO is quoted to order; call us with your post model and we will confirm the fit.

How Q-PANELs attach

  • Single-line portable posts: standard attachment on the top clip plus a support bungee at the bottom. The bungee is required outdoors.
  • Dual-line portable posts: standard attachments on both the upper and lower clips, no bungee needed.
  • Floor-mounted posts (MINI-SOCKET®, removable, magnetic or fixed bases): factory-installed EZ-Off End Blocks are required.
  • Ending at a wall: a Q-PANEL receiving end mounts the panel to a wall or column so you do not need a final post.

Q-BEAM® and Q-PANEL Top Beam Lines

Q-BEAM is a 1 x 2 in. heavy-gauge aluminum beam that runs between compatible RETRACTA-BELT posts. It comes in 48, 72 and 94 in. lengths (about 2, 3 and 4 lb). Universal End Blocks let each beam swing about 15 degrees either way, so the line can follow real-world turns. Choose single-beam for an open look or double-beam for a firmer boundary, on portable or floor-mounted posts. Locking EZ-Off End Blocks are optional where beams should not be removed by guests.

Q-PANEL Top Beam (PNLTB) is the most economical Q-PANEL: a heavy aluminum beam along the top edge holds an insert below it. Six standard sizes (48, 72 or 94 in. wide, 24 or 32 in. high), single-line posts only, EZ-Off End Blocks included. Four top screws release the insert for replacement while the beam stays on the posts. The smallest panel weighs 10 lb. Both carry a 10-year limited warranty.

Airport queue lanes with rigid beam barriers running between polished stanchion posts

Use a beam line where a belt sags or gets unclipped all day, but a full framed panel would block sightlines or cost more than the job needs. Posts are sold separately for both systems, so confirm the post model, base style and center-to-center spacing before you order beam lengths.

6 ft Privacy Panels and Temporary Rooms

The 48 x 66 in. Heavy Duty Q-PANEL turns stanchion posts into a 6 ft wall. Used with a 6 ft post with clips and cap, it creates screening areas, secondary inspection rooms, staff-only zones, temporary offices and transparent guards without construction. Opaque Sintra gives privacy; clear or frosted acrylic keeps the space visible but separated.

Because the panels are portable, a privacy area can be built for an event and stored afterward. For permanent walls with doors, see our flexible privacy and modular wall systems.

Steel Bike Rack Barricades for Events and Perimeters

The Visiontron SB800HD is the classic interlocking steel barricade, often called a bike rack barricade or French barricade. Each section is 96 in. wide, 42.75 in. high and 24 in. deep with its feet on, and weighs 41 lb. The uprights and connector hooks are inserted into the frame before welding, and the whole barricade is hot-dip galvanized after fabrication, so the welds and the inside of the tubes are coated too.

Integral 45-degree hooks join sections without tools or loose hardware and make it harder for someone to lift one section out of a run. Flat, removable 24 in. feet pin on without tools; each foot has two holes for optional rubber floor protectors or for anchoring to a suitable surface.

Turn the barricade into a sign. A separately purchased custom-printed cover stretches across the 8 ft span and carries lane names, directions, sponsor logos or safety messages. Venues use them to mark premium entry lanes and to hide the bare steel in camera shots.

Close the gaps. Barricades are freestanding, so pair them with belt products where a gap needs to open and close: a PM412 post mount carries a 30 ft retractable belt across a service lane, and cone toppers turn ordinary traffic cones into a 10 or 15 ft belt barrier.

Order the steel bike rack barricade online or ask us for a section count from your site plan.

How Panels and Barricades Improve Safety

A rigid barrier does not just look more serious. It changes how people behave around it, and that is where the safety benefit comes from.

🚫

No line-ducking

People cannot slip under a panel the way they can under a belt, so queue order holds and staff spend less time policing it.

➡️

Predictable flow

Fixed lanes keep travel paths and switchbacks where you planned them, which keeps aisles and exits clear.

🪧

Messages people read

Every panel and barricade cover is a sign surface for directions, rules and warnings at eye level.

🛡️

Separation that holds

Steel barricades and 6 ft panels keep crowds away from stages, vehicles, equipment and restricted areas.

♿

Accessible lanes

Dual-line posts and panels give a lower edge cane users can detect; see our ADA queue guide below.

🔒

Tamper resistance

Tamper-resistant inserts, locking end blocks and 45-degree barricade hooks resist casual removal.

Plan exits before you set the line

Rigid barriers are harder to move in a hurry than belts. Keep required exit paths and aisle widths clear, plan where staff can open the line, and confirm the layout with your fire marshal or venue safety officer. Visiontron’s ADA checkpoint gates and barriers provide a 36.625 in. clear gate opening for security lanes.

Planning a Panel or Barricade Layout

1

Measure the run

Measure each straight run and turn. Panels and beams come in fixed widths, so the post spacing follows the panel width you choose.

2

Check your posts

Note the post model, single or dual line, and base style. That decides the attachment, end blocks and bungees.

3

Pick inserts

Clear for visibility, frosted or Sintra for privacy, printed for branding. Changing often? Choose Designer Series.

4

Count barricades

For steel, divide the perimeter by 8 ft, add sections for corners and closed gaps, and mark openings for entry, exit and emergency access.

Send us the floor plan or site plan, the peak crowd and the date you need it. We return a layout, a part-by-part list of panels, posts, end blocks and barricades, and freight to your dock. Planning a whole queue? Our guide to how much space a queue needs helps size lanes first.

Visiontron Panels & Barricades FAQs

What is the difference between a crowd control panel and a barricade?
A panel (Q-PANEL) is a framed insert that attaches between stanchion posts to make a rigid queue lane, usually indoors. A barricade (the SB800HD steel barricade) is a freestanding 8 ft steel section that interlocks with the next one to build outdoor perimeters.
Can Q-PANELs attach to my existing stanchions?
Yes, if the posts are compatible single- or dual-line RETRACTA-BELT posts. ECO Series panels also fit appropriate Lavi Beltrac posts. Tell us the post model and base style and we will confirm the attachment, end blocks and bungees.
What sizes do Heavy Duty Q-PANELs come in?
Seven standard frames: 48 x 26, 48 x 34, 72 x 26, 72 x 34, 92 x 26 and 92 x 34 in., plus a 48 x 66 in. privacy panel. Custom sizes are available with minimums.
Can Q-PANELs be used outdoors?
Yes. Black anodized and satin aluminum Heavy Duty frames are outdoor-ready. The posts, bases and inserts must also suit the site, and single-line outdoor systems need a support bungee at the bottom of each panel.
How big and heavy is the steel bike rack barricade?
The SB800HD is 96 in. wide, 42.75 in. high and 24 in. deep with its flat feet installed, and weighs 41 lb. It is hot-dip galvanized after fabrication for outdoor use.
Can panel inserts be custom printed?
Yes. Q-PANEL inserts can be printed with branding, directions, rules or advertising, and steel barricades can take a printed cover. Designer Series panels let staff change inserts without removing the panel.
What warranty do Visiontron panels have?
Heavy Duty, Designer Series, ECO, Top Beam and Q-BEAM systems carry a 10-year limited warranty from Visiontron.
