About the project
Scythian is an oil and gas company with an office in Midland, Texas. Like many companies in the Permian Basin, the business runs on a steady stream of paper: leases, land records, well files, contracts and regulatory filings that all need a home close to the desks that use them, not in an offsite storage unit.
The project closed in June 2025 and added a mobile shelving system to the office’s file room, built to match the space the company already had rather than requiring the business to find more square footage.
The situation
Office file rooms grow slowly and then run out all at once. A few years of land files, contracts and regulatory records add up, and the static shelving that once had room to spare eventually runs out of open shelf space entirely.
The usual next step is renting offsite storage, which solves the space problem but creates a new one: records that used to be a short walk away are now a drive away, which slows down anyone who needs a file the same day.
The other common option, knocking out a wall to make the file room bigger, is expensive and often not possible in a leased office building. The goal for this project was to add real storage capacity inside the file room’s existing four walls.
