Moving Times-2 Speed Files and Adding Dividers at a University of Utah Lab
University of Utah Andrology & IVF Laboratories kept the Times-2 rotary cabinets it already owned. Our Salt Lake City team took two of them down, moved and reassembled them, worked on the locks and matched new Aurora dividers to cabinets in two different finishes.

A Service Project, Not a New Cabinet Order
Most Times-2 case studies start with new cabinets. This one starts with cabinets a University of Utah laboratory already owned. In spring 2018 the Andrology & IVF Laboratories in Salt Lake City was rearranging its office space on the same floor and needed its existing Aurora Times-2 Speed Files moved, the locks looked at, and more dividers for the shelves. Buying new cabinets was never the plan. The lab wanted the ones it had to keep working in their new spot.
That is a common request: Times-2 cabinets last for decades, so an office that reorganizes usually needs a careful move and a few parts, not new equipment. The catch is that a rotary cabinet is not a lateral file you can empty and wheel down the hall. Its rotating interior sits on a bearing base, and moving it the wrong way can damage the part that makes it work.

The quote was issued under NationWide Shelving, the name our Utah business used at the time. The same sales and installation team runs Material Handling USA today. Everything below comes from the project file: the quote, the customer’s emails, the installer’s paperwork, Aurora’s order records and our invoices. We have left out pricing, room details, the lab’s contacts and anything about what the lab stores.

Scoping the Move: Two Cabinets Now, Not Four
Our first quote covered moving all four Times-2 units the lab had. Before signing, the lab told us it would only be moving two of them for now and asked whether the price would be cut in half.
We gave a straight answer: not really. A cabinet move is priced mostly on the installation crew’s day and travel. Two cabinets still take a crew, a truck and a trip across town. We offered a small reduction for the smaller scope and asked whether the lab would rather do all four at once. The lab chose two, and the quote was revised to match.
If a move may happen in stages, remember that the crew visit is the main cost. But the customer knows the building schedule, and moving only what is ready is a reasonable choice.
How a Times-2 Cabinet Is Moved
The installer’s paperwork describes the work in three words: take down, move, reassemble. That matches Aurora’s own guidance. The Times-2 installation manual has a short section on moving units. It asks for care and patience, notes that partial disassembly is sometimes enough, and says the rotor assembly can come off the base when it really has to. On reassembly the race channel is lubricated, the ball bearings go back into their cage, and the center carriage bolt has to line up over the hole in the base without being bent.
Doors, posts, canopy tops and the rotating interior all come apart from the base. The installer moves the parts, sets the base down in the new spot, levels it and rebuilds the cabinet on top. Cabinets should be emptied before they are taken down, and ahead of the install date the lab arranged rented moving crates for the contents.

Aurora is direct about who should do this work. The manual tells owners to talk to an authorized Times-2 dealer before relocating a cabinet, and it says the lifetime warranty on the starter or add-on base is void if a non-authorized crew damages it. The planning guide’s warranty language also excludes product moved or repaired by anyone other than an authorized Aurora representative. A general mover can carry the panels, but the base should be handled by an installer who knows the product. Our team has handled Times-2 projects all over Utah, from new rows such as the Salt Lake Valley Detention Center installation to service calls like this one.
Getting the Existing Locks Working
The lab also reported problems with its cabinet locks. A Times-2 lock is more than a cylinder in the door post. A vertical lock rod passes through holes in the base and engages a lock bar underneath, so a lock that has stopped catching can be an alignment problem, especially after a cabinet has been moved or the base has shifted, rather than a broken part.
So we split the work. The quote asked the crew to try to get the existing locks working as part of the reassembly, when the base and lock rods are already exposed and aligned. We quoted a separate return trip only if new locks had to be ordered. The project file shows the move invoiced as one visit. We have no record of a return trip for lock replacement.
If replacement does turn out to be needed, Aurora offers several lock choices: the standard key lock, Medeco high-security cylinders, a twin-lock option with a supervisor key on the front post, and a low-voltage electronic keypad that fits all Times-2 cabinets in place of the standard lock.

Matching Replacement Dividers to Older Cabinets

The lab also wanted more shelf dividers. That sounds simple, but getting the right part took the most back-and-forth in the whole project. Times-2 dividers have three-point support, with two tabs on the shelf and one under the shelf above. Aurora makes them in several heights to suit different shelf openings. A divider that is close but not exact will not seat properly.
When our order went to Aurora customer service, the lab compared the proposed part with the dividers already in its cabinets and saw that it was the wrong profile. The lab then measured and traced an existing divider, showing the tab at the top and the two tabs at the bottom, and that drawing went to Aurora so the right part could be confirmed before anything shipped.
Color was the second question. Aurora’s planning guide says to order divider color to match the unit, and this lab had cabinets in two finishes, one sand and one grey. We asked which color it wanted and whether it knew the original finish. The lab said any neutral would work, and Aurora customer service asked us to confirm the grey finish before the order shipped.
Aurora packs dividers in fives. The final order was 40 dividers, shipped UPS directly to the lab’s suite, with tracking passed along on our invoice. Aurora’s standard units are described as having fully compatible accessories that can be ordered at purchase or later, which is why a lab can add dividers to cabinets bought years earlier. It is also why getting the exact part number right matters more than finding something that looks similar.

Lessons for Anyone Moving or Updating Times-2 Cabinets
These photos are representative Aurora product images, not the lab. They show the interior and layout choices that come up when an owner reworks existing cabinets.
Use a Crew That Knows the BaseAurora ties the base warranty to authorized handling. Ask whoever moves your cabinets how they take down and rebuild a Times-2.
Empty and Label FirstBox the contents by cabinet face and tier before move day, so files go back where your team expects to find them.
Send a Photo of the Old PartFor dividers, shelves or drawers, a photo or traced outline of the part you have is the fastest way to the right Aurora part number.
Group the VisitCrew time drives the cost of a move. Moving, lock work and add-on parts done in one visit usually beats separate trips. If your records have outgrown the cabinets, a move is a good time to check whether some files belong somewhere else. Long-term archives often fit better on high-density mobile shelving in Utah, while active clinical files stay close at hand. Our guide to rotary cabinets for medical charts and clinic supplies covers that split, and the rotating office cabinet guide compares rotary cabinets with lateral files. Labs planning a bigger refit can also look at our laboratory furniture for Utah facilities.
