Pick the cart around the trip, not around the shelf count

A utility cart is bought on wheels and shelves, but it is kept or scrapped on one question: does the load stay on it between the two ends of the trip? An open three-shelf cart is perfect for a 60-foot move across a clean assembly floor and completely wrong for a 400-foot push over expansion joints and a dock plate, where the same cartons walk off the top shelf. That is the reason Quantum builds the cart line as families rather than as a single product: the shelf platform stays the same, and what changes is the perimeter, the handle, the caster and the base.

What decides the family

• Does the load need retaining? Open shelves for stable cartons and totes; rods and tabs or enclosure panels the moment product can shift, roll or be walked off.
• How far, and over what floor? Five-inch casters and donut bumpers handle mixed plant floors; a dolly base spreads heavier loads over four plate casters for long hauls.
• One hand or two? U-handle carts steer from either end at 29-1/2″ handle height; push-handle carts add a single 40″-high handle for one-direction runs.
• Loose parts or packaged goods? Bin carts and slanted-shelf carts present parts in dividable grids or shelf bins; flat shelves suit cartons, kits and fixtures.
• Wash-down, ESD, cold or corrosive? Finish choice — chrome, Proform green, gray or black epoxy, galvanized, 304 stainless, or a conductive package — is what carries the environment, not the frame.

Enclosure and transport carts: the load stays where you put it

An enclosure cart is a stem-caster cart with a perimeter. Quantum builds that perimeter three ways, and the choice is about how enclosed the load has to be rather than how heavy it is — all three ride on the same platform, rated up to 1,200 lb mobile load capacity.

Rods and tabs

Three rods drop into front/back and side tabs to fence three sides of the cart. Kits come in 52″, 61″, 72″ and 84″ rod lengths, each with three rods, nine front/back tabs and nine side tabs, and they are adaptable to any shelf position — so the fence moves when the shelf layout changes. It is the economical enclosure and it is also the retrofit answer for stem-caster carts and stationary units you already own.

Complete carts are stocked in four- and five-shelf builds on 63″ and 74″ posts, 18″–24″ deep by 36″–60″ long, all with four 5″ swivel thermoplastic resin casters (two braked) and four donut bumpers.

Welded wire enclosure panels

Where rods leave gaps, modular enclosure panels close the cart in. Panels are fabricated from six-gauge wire on 3″ x 3″ squares and are available for four shelf depths — 14″, 18″, 21″ and 24″ — in 63″, 74″ and 86″ heights. One panel closes each side and two or three panels close the back. The EP-CLIP hardware package fastens panels tight to the shelves so they do not rattle in transit; order one package per panel.

Dolly base or stem casters?

A stem-caster cart carries its casters in the posts; a dolly-base cart sits on a welded base with four plate casters — two rigid and two swivel with brake. The plate-caster base tracks straighter over long distances and handles heavier, less balanced loads; the trade-off is roughly an inch of extra overall height and a slightly larger footprint. Both are offered with the same shelf and enclosure options, so the decision is purely about the trip.

Stem-caster carts: shelving that moves

Where a utility cart is a two- or three-shelf platform, a stem-caster cart is a full shelving unit on wheels — four posts, four or five shelves, donut bumpers and four 5″ thermoplastic resin casters with two brakes, rated up to 1,200 lb mobile load capacity. On 63″ posts the cart stands 69″ overall; on 74″ posts, 80″. That vertical space is why these carts dominate supply and distribution, stock rotation, laundry and staging work: a five-shelf 24″ x 60″ cart moves the contents of a whole shelving bay in one trip.

Footprints run 18″ and 24″ deep by 36″, 48″ and 60″ long in both post heights, and the finish is changed by swapping the letter in the model number rather than by ordering a different product — P for Proform green, GY for gray epoxy, BK for black epoxy, SS for stainless. Mixing a solid shelf into the bottom position is the single most useful option in the family: it stops dust and dirt rising into the load and contains spillage while the upper wire shelves keep air moving and contents visible.

Add-on bays cannot be made mobile, so a cart is the answer whenever a run has to break apart and travel.

Slanted-shelf and work-in-process carts

Sloped shelves do three things at once: they present the front of every bin to the operator, they gravity-feed stock forward as it is picked, and they make a wrong-part pick obvious from six feet away. Quantum builds them as work-station carts, as full five- and seven-level mobile units, and as complete packages with the bins already specified.

Double-sided pick carts

Where two operators work the same cart, a double-sided QuickPick build lets both pick at once. The heavy-duty wire systems these bins sit on offer up to 800 lb capacity per shelf, measure 18″W x 36″L x 74″H and can be ordered with or without a mobile kit. The bins carry a moulded label holder on both the front and the back and take optional dividers front-to-back, side-to-side, or both at once for up to four compartments. The matching mobile cart is a two- or three-shelf 18″W x 36″L x 37-1/2″H build with four swivel casters, two braked.

One color per cart is the rule in this family, which sounds like a limitation and is actually the point — color becomes the routing signal on the floor.

Bin transport trucks and tray trucks

When the load stops being “a few bins” and becomes a shift’s worth of them, the cart line steps up to all-welded steel. These are not shelf carts with heavier wheels — the frames, handles and caster mounts are different, and so is the capacity.

Trays, not shelves

Tray trucks carry removable trays rather than fixed shelves, so a tray of parts leaves the truck and goes to the bench. Open-front and closed-front trays are stocked at 9″ x 36″ x 3″ and 15″ x 36″ x 6″, with matching tray dividers, and a single-sided frame takes 14 of the shallow trays while a double-sided TTD-40 takes 28. Pre-configured units are also stocked — TTD-OT15-240, for example, is a double-sided TTD-40 frame with ten open trays and 40 stackable bins.

The rail cart is the odd one out and the one to remember for bin-heavy stockrooms: it accepts Ultra bins directly on rails, up to 64 of them, and its flat top with raised edges doubles as a work surface.
