What Is a Vertical Carpet Carousel?

A vertical carpet carousel, also called a carpet carousel, carpet machine or vertical carpet rack, is a motorized storage tower that holds carpet rolls lying horizontally on carriers. The carriers ride a chain loop that runs up one side of the frame, over the top and down the other side. When an associate presses the button, the loop turns until the roll they want sits at the loading position near the floor. That is the machine shoppers see in big-box home improvement stores and flooring centers, with a cutting table parked in front.

The Vidir Carpet Carousel is the model MH-USA supplies. Vidir, a Canadian manufacturer of vertical storage machines, calls it its storage and display solution for carpet rolls of many widths, diameters and sizes. Because the machine works in the air above the sales floor or warehouse aisle, the floor area a roll inventory needs shrinks sharply; Vidir puts the saving at up to 70% compared with conventional roll storage.

This page covers how the carousel works, the standard models and roll counts from Vidir’s brochure, the cutters that pair with it, how it compares with static carpet racks, and the questions we ask to size one. For the full range of Vidir machines, see our Vidir vertical storage solutions hub.

How a Carpet Carousel Works

1

Select the roll

The associate enters the security code on the keypad and holds the forward or reverse button. The keypad keeps untrained staff and customers from running the machine.

2

The carousel rotates

Carriers travel around the chain loop at about 21 feet per minute (Vidir’s published speed) until the chosen roll reaches the loading position.

3

Feed the cutter

The roll pays out onto a Vidir cutter in front of the carousel: Carousel Mate for manual measuring, or Cut’N’Roll and Rack n’ Roll for powered cutting and roll-up.

4

Measure, cut and re-roll

The customer’s length is measured, cut and rolled up for the cart or dolly. The parent roll stays on its carrier.

5

Return or reload

The carousel indexes on. New rolls are loaded at the same point using Vidir’s patented loading bars, so one person can load without a forklift at height.

Collars and tapered cones securing carpet roll cores on a Vidir carousel carrier

The key difference from a rack is that the roll comes to the person. On a static rack the fourth-level roll means a forklift, a carpet pole or a second employee, and the pick has to wait for equipment. On a carousel every roll in the machine is the same number of button presses away, and each pick happens at the same comfortable working height. Vidir designs the unit for single-person operation and loading, which is why the carousel is so common in stores that run carpet cutting with one associate on the floor.

Bearings, tension collars and tapered cones can be fitted to the carriers so a roll turns smoothly as it pays out to the cutter while staying in place on the carrier. That matters when the carousel feeds a cutter all day rather than just storing rolls.

Benefits of a Vertical Carpet Rack That Moves

📏

Floor space back

Rolls are stored overhead, so the footprint is a fraction of a flat or A-frame layout. Vidir cites up to 70% less floor space.

🧍

Safer handling

Rolls arrive at a set working height. Vidir’s design reduces bending, lifting, pushing and climbing, which are where carpet handling injuries happen.

⚡

Faster cuts

No forklift or second person to pull a roll down. The roll is ready at the cutter in the time it takes to rotate.

🛡️

Protected stock

Each roll rides on its own carrier rather than being stacked, so crushed ends, flattened rolls and dirty edges drop.

🛍️

Sells the product

On a sales floor the carousel doubles as a display. An optional lighted signboard turns the front into a merchandising fixture.

📊

Inventory control

Vidir offers inventory control options that track roll locations and speed retrieval in larger operations.

The space math is what usually starts the conversation. A carpet roll is commonly 12 or 15 feet long, so a flat rack or floor stack eats a lot of square footage per roll, and every additional SKU adds a lane. A carousel stacks those same rolls vertically inside one frame, so adding capacity means a taller model rather than a longer wall. In a retail store the freed floor becomes selling space; in a warehouse it becomes staging, a second cutting station or room for other flooring lines.

Vidir Carpet Carousel Models and Roll Counts

Vidir’s carpet carousel brochure lists ten standard models across three roll-diameter classes. The R39 frames take rolls up to 24 or 31 inches in diameter; the larger R45 frames take rolls up to 36 inches. Additional models are available, and the model on your quote drawing governs.

Model Height Max roll diameter Rolls
R39134-1026 11′ 10″ (3,608 mm) 24″ (610 mm) 10
R39174-1326 15′ 1″ (4,597 mm) 24″ (610 mm) 13
R39225-1726 19′ 5″ (5,918 mm) 24″ (610 mm) 17
R39089-0534 8′ 4″ (2,540 mm) 31″ (788 mm) 5
R39140-0834 12′ 7″ (3,836 mm) 31″ (788 mm) 8
R39174-1034 15′ 5″ (4,699 mm) 31″ (788 mm) 10
R39225-1334 19′ 8″ (5,995 mm) 31″ (788 mm) 13
R45123-0640 11′ 5″ (3,480 mm) 36″ (915 mm) 6
R45183-0940 16′ 5″ (5,004 mm) 36″ (915 mm) 9
R45243-1240 21′ 5″ (6,528 mm) 36″ (915 mm) 12

Reading the model number

In the brochure model codes, the last digits track roll count and roll diameter class (for example R39225-1726 holds 17 rolls of up to 24 in diameter). Taller units hold more rolls at the same diameter, so ceiling height is usually the first limit on capacity. Source: Vidir Carpet Carousel brochure CCAR2018R00, download the PDF.

Standard package. Vidir’s current published package for the Carpet Carousel includes forward and reverse push buttons with a security keypad and emergency stop, a 13,000 lb overall chain rating, 1,000 lb capacity per carrier, a 15% off-balance load allowance, retrieval at about 21 feet per minute, patented loading bars, white panels and structure with grey carriers and mesh, the cCSAus mark and a two-year manufacturer’s warranty.

Electrical. Standard supply options are 208/230 V, 15 A, 60 Hz three-phase or 460/480 V, 10 A, 60 Hz three-phase. Vidir lists other electrical options on request, so confirm your building’s service before the quote is finalized.

Off-balance in practice. The 15% figure means the loop should not be loaded with all of the heavy rolls on one side. When you plan which SKUs go where, spread the heaviest rolls around the loop; we walk through this during layout.

Carpet Cutters: Carousel Mate, Cut’N’Roll and Rack n’ Roll

Vidir builds a line of carpet cutting machines meant to sit in front of the carousel, so storage, display, measuring and cutting become one workstation. Its brochure lists three:

  • Carousel Mate: a manual cutter and roll-up system with built-in measuring. A good fit for lower cut volumes.
  • Cut’N’Roll: powered cutting and roll-up with an electronic counter and a belted roll-up cradle, run by one person.
  • Rack n’ Roll: powered cutting and roll-up with a rotary cutter design, also single-person.

The current Cut’N’Roll II lets one person unroll, inspect, measure, cut, re-roll and wrap both carpet and vinyl. A feed roller draws material across the table into position, the electronic counter reads in imperial or metric, speed is variable, a foot cable allows control away from the panel, and the patented circular cutter sharpens its own blade. The table is roughly 15′ 9″ wide, 3′ 2″ high and 2′ 8″ deep, and enclosed casters let one cutter serve several carousels on a floor track. Cut’N’Roll II brochure (PDF).

If your stores also cut sheet vinyl, Vidir makes a dedicated vinyl machine with its own cutting bar and payout; see our vinyl roll storage carousel page. For fabric and other textile rolls, see the Vidir textile carousel.

Carpet Carousel vs. Flat, A-Frame and Cantilever Carpet Racks

Static carpet racks are the main alternative, and plenty of operations need both. Here is how they compare for the same roll inventory.

Vertical carpet carousel Flat / pallet-style carpet rack A-frame or stack rack Cantilever carpet rack
Floor space Smallest; rolls stored overhead Large; long lanes per level Moderate; portable Large; arms need open aisle
Retrieval Push-button, roll to operator Forklift with carpet pole above floor level Forklift or two people Forklift or side-loader
Staff needed One person Operator plus equipment Often two Operator plus equipment
Feeds a cutter Yes, cutter sits in front Roll must be moved to cutter Roll must be moved Roll must be moved
Best for Fast-moving SKUs cut daily, sales floors Bulk full-roll stock in warehouses Shipping and temporary storage Mixed-length rolls, bulk stock
Capacity growth Taller model or added tower More bays More units More arms or bays

A common pattern is a carousel at the cutting station for the SKUs cut every day, backed by static racking for bulk and full-roll inventory. Our carpet roll storage racks page covers cantilever, roll-beam and pad racks for that side of the warehouse, and the carpet storage racks buyer’s guide walks through rack sizing. For a wider look at powered versus static storage, see vertical carousel vs. traditional storage.

Retail Flooring Stores vs. Distributors and Manufacturers

Vidir Carpet Carousel in a retail flooring department with carpet rolls and a cutting table in front

Retail flooring and home improvement stores. Here the carousel is storage and fixture at once. It holds the popular cut-to-order SKUs, shows the product, and lets one associate serve a customer from selection to cut piece without calling for a forklift on the sales floor. The keypad keeps customers from running it, and a lighted signboard turns it into merchandising. More on store layouts: vertical storage for retail and distribution.

Flooring distributors and warehouses. Distributors cut remnants and short lengths for installers all day. A carousel at the cut station, often several towers linked side by side, keeps those rolls off the floor and in one ergonomic pick zone while bulk stock stays in racks.

Manufactured housing and production lines. Vidir specifically calls out manufactured homes, where carpet is cut to length for each unit, and production lines where the carousel feeds material with quick roll changeovers.

Sizing Questions We Will Ask

Every carousel is configured to the rolls and the room. Bring these answers to the first call and we can turn around a layout quickly:

  • Roll widths and lengths you stock (for example 12 ft and 15 ft) and whether any are longer.
  • Largest roll diameter and heaviest roll weight; this sets the R39 or R45 frame and checks the 1,000 lb carrier rating.
  • How many SKUs need to be at the cutting station, and how fast they turn.
  • Clear ceiling height and any sprinklers, lights or ducts above the footprint.
  • Floor condition at the location.
  • Electrical service available (208/230 V or 460/480 V three-phase).
  • Cutter: manual Carousel Mate or powered Cut’N’Roll, and whether one cutter serves several carousels.
  • Retail or back-of-house, which drives signboard, enclosure and color choices.

From there we work with Vidir on a drawing and quote for supply or supply plus installation; see installation services. Vertical Carpet Carousel FAQs

What is a carpet carousel?
A motorized vertical storage tower that holds carpet rolls horizontally on carriers and rotates them on a chain loop so the selected roll stops at the loading and cutting position.
How many rolls does a Vidir Carpet Carousel hold?
Vidir’s standard models hold 5 to 17 rolls, depending on height and roll diameter class (24, 31 or 36 inch). Additional models and multi-tower layouts are available.
How much floor space does it save?
Vidir states the carousel can reduce the floor space needed for carpet inventory by up to 70% compared with conventional roll storage. Your saving depends on the layout it replaces.
How much weight can each carrier hold?
Vidir’s standard package lists 1,000 lb per carrier, a 13,000 lb overall chain rating and a 15% off-balance allowance. The rating on your quote drawing governs.
Can one person run it?
Yes. Vidir designs the carousel and its Cut’N’Roll cutters for single-person operation and loading, with a security keypad to prevent unauthorized use.
Which cutter should we pair with it?
Carousel Mate is a manual cutter with built-in measuring. Cut’N’Roll and Rack n’ Roll are powered cut and roll-up systems; the Cut’N’Roll II handles carpet and vinyl with an electronic counter and self-sharpening circular blade.
