Project Snapshot

Young Subaru is a Subaru dealership in South Ogden, Utah, and part of the Young Automotive Group of dealerships along the Wasatch Front. Its parts team already ran on Borroughs Flexi-Bin shelving, the shallow steel small-parts shelving Borroughs designed for dealership parts departments. When the dealership built a new parts department, it asked Material Handling USA to plan and supply the storage for the new space, with Flexi-Bin at the center of it.

The Situation: A New Parts Department, a System That Already Worked

In June 2024, Young Subaru’s parts manager contacted our team with a clear starting point. The dealership already used Borroughs Flexi-Bin units for small parts and Borroughs closed shelving with box-edge shelves for larger boxed parts. It was moving into a new parts department and wanted the same Borroughs system there, plus bulk storage racks for the items that do not fit on parts shelving.

That is a common situation for established dealerships. The parts team knows its inventory, its bin locations and its picking habits. Staff are used to the way Flexi-Bin shelves and dividers work. A move is a chance to fix what did not fit in the old room, but it is not the time to retrain everyone on a different shelving system.

The existing room also showed a detail the dealership wanted to keep: blue Borroughs units with yellow plastic shelf bins holding the smallest parts. Carrying that look into the new room was part of the brief.

Planning: Floor Plans, a Site Walk and Several Rounds of Layout

The dealership sent the building floor plan and then the contractor’s full plan set. Our sales team met the parts team at the dealership in July 2024 to walk through the existing room and talk through the new one. The existing room was the best reference we had: it showed which parts lived in Flexi-Bin openings, which lived on deeper box-edge shelves and which needed bulk storage.

From there the layout went through several rounds of revisions between July and September 2024. Borroughs prepared plan views and 3D renderings from our notes, the parts team marked up what they wanted changed, and we sent updated drawings back. The changes were practical ones: lining up the ends of shelving runs the way the team wanted them, swapping one shelving type for another in a section, and confirming where shelf dividers were included. The dealership’s team commented on how quickly one set of revisions came back, which kept the schedule moving while the building was being finished.

Once the parts team was happy with the drawings, the dealership signed the quote and we placed the order with Borroughs in November 2024.

What We Supplied: Flexi-Bin at the Core of a Borroughs Parts Room

The order combined several Borroughs product lines, each doing the job it is best at. The table lists the product families on the Borroughs invoices. Flexi-Bin part numbers are cross-checked against the Borroughs Flexi-Bin literature.

Product family What was included What it holds
Borroughs Flexi-Bin Frame components (sides, backs, tops, automotive bottoms), slide-in shelves (02720-099) and 3-inch sliding shelf dividers (14066-001) Small, fast-moving parts in sequence
Borroughs box-edge closed shelving Box-edge shelves, closed beaded posts, backs, sliding dividers and label holders Larger boxed parts
Borroughs drawers Drawer units mounted in the shelving on drawer mounting uprights Loose hardware and small items that spill on an open shelf
Borroughs Rivet-Span Open shelving with wire and solid decking Bulk and bulky items
Rivet-Span tire storage Tire beams on Rivet-Span frames Tires
Battery rack Borroughs battery rack kit with drip pan Batteries
Work surfaces Borroughs tapered stainless steel tops Counter and work surface use
Shelf bins Yellow plastic shelf bins The smallest parts inside Flexi-Bin openings

Finish: Borroughs blue across the Borroughs lines. We do not publish quantities.

Flexi-Bin units for small parts

Flexi-Bin is built from separate frame components, which is how this order was supplied: sides, backs, tops and automotive bottoms, plus the shelves and dividers that go inside. Borroughs Flexi-Bin frames are 12 inches deep, and this order used the 84-inch frame height. The shallow depth keeps small parts at the front of the shelf where they can be seen and picked, instead of sliding to the back of a deep shelf.

Because the frames are made of components, a parts room can be built as long runs of connected units rather than stand-alone boxes. The slotted side panels visible in the photos carry the slide-in shelves.

Slide-in shelves that move on 1-1/2-inch steps

Flexi-Bin slide-in shelves (Borroughs part 02720-099) adjust on 1-1/2-inch increments and lock in place automatically. Borroughs states they can be raised or lowered without disturbing the parts on them, and rates each shelf at 150 lbs. For a parts department that is moving, that matters after the move as well as before it. Once parts are on the shelves and the team sees how the new room works, openings can be re-spaced without unloading them.

Sliding shelf dividers for one part number per slot

The order included Flexi-Bin 3-inch sliding shelf dividers (part 14066-001). Borroughs makes these dividers in 1-1/2, 3, 4-1/2 and 6-inch heights, and each has a formed-in label holder that travels with the divider when parts are rearranged. Dividers split each shelf into compartments sized for the parts in them, so one opening can hold several part numbers and each stays in its own labeled slot.

During planning the parts team specifically asked which shelving sections would include dividers. That is a question worth asking on any Flexi-Bin quote, because dividers are what turn open shelf space into countable part locations.

Box-edge shelving and drawers for everything larger

Not every part belongs in a 12-inch-deep Flexi-Bin opening. Boxed parts such as brake components, filters in cases and body parts need deeper shelves. The dealership already used Borroughs closed shelving with box-edge shelves for these, so the new room repeated that pattern, with sliding dividers and label holders on the box-edge shelves as well.

Borroughs drawer units, mounted inside the shelving on drawer mounting uprights, took the loose hardware that tends to migrate on an open shelf. Drawers with compartment inserts keep those items together and out of sight lines at the counter. For more on the rest of the Borroughs parts-room range, see our Borroughs automotive shelving page.

Rivet-Span for bulk storage, tires and batteries

The bulk storage racks the dealership asked for were Borroughs Rivet-Span open shelving, with wire decking and solid decking on the levels. Rivet-Span handles the items that do not suit parts shelving: bulky boxed parts, accessories and overflow stock. Rivet-Span tire beams turned a wall into tire storage, and a Borroughs battery rack kit with a drip pan gave batteries their own dedicated rack.

In spring 2025 the dealership came back to ask us for a quote on added battery rack lane dividers. That kind of follow-on request is normal once a parts team is working in a new room and fine-tuning where things live.

Tire beams sit between Rivet-Span uprights so tires rest on the beams rather than on a flat shelf. For tire storage options beyond the parts room, see our tire storage systems page.

Keeping the blue and yellow look

The Borroughs lines were ordered in Borroughs blue, and the quote included yellow plastic shelf bins for the smallest parts, matching the blue units and yellow bins the parts team already worked with. Borroughs lists black, blue, industrial gray, mist gray, pebble, red and white as Flexi-Bin frame colors, so matching an existing room is usually a matter of confirming the color at quote time.

Delivery and Installation

Borroughs shipped the order by freight directly to the dealership in South Ogden in December 2024. We coordinated the installation crew, which was on site laying out and assembling the shelving later that month, working from the approved drawings. The shelf bins shipped separately from the steel.

The photos on this page from February 2025 show the new room assembled and ready to stock: long runs of Flexi-Bin units, box-edge shelving near the parts counter, and Rivet-Span along the walls.

Large parts-room orders rarely arrive as one perfect shipment, and this one had a few follow-up items. After installation we worked with the parts team to track items that shipped separately, including the shelf bins, and a replacement beam from Borroughs. We keep that follow-through as part of the job rather than treating delivery as the finish line.

We did not receive written feedback about results for this case study, so we are not publishing claims about picking speed or time saved. What the records show is a dealership that chose to carry its Flexi-Bin system into a new building and came back for more Borroughs components once it was working in the new room.

Lessons for Dealerships Moving a Parts Department

The points below are general guidance from our work on Flexi-Bin parts rooms, not details of the Young Subaru layout. They are the questions we raise with any dealership that is building or moving a parts department.

  • Start from the room you have. Your current parts room is the best record of what fits where. Photos of it, and a walk through it, tell us more than a parts count alone.
  • Get the building plans early. Contractor drawings show columns, doors, windows and ceiling heights, which decide whether 84-inch or 96-inch Flexi-Bin frames make sense and where runs can go.
  • Match each part type to the right shelving. Flexi-Bin for small parts in sequence, deeper box-edge shelving for boxed parts, drawers for loose hardware, and open Rivet-Span for bulk, tires and batteries.
  • Expect layout revisions. Plan views and 3D renderings let the parts team mark up changes before anything is ordered. Budget time for more than one round.
  • Confirm dividers and labels on the quote. Ask which sections include sliding shelf dividers and label holders. They are what turn shelf space into part locations.
  • Confirm the finish. If you are matching an existing room or a brand color scheme, settle the Borroughs color and any bin colors before the order is placed.
  • Plan anchoring. Tall shelving in Utah is commonly anchored to the floor. Borroughs offers a post foot angle for Flexi-Bin posts, and your local building official sets the requirement.

Use your parts data. If you can export a parts list from your dealer management system, our SKU upload analyzer can help turn part counts into shelf, divider and drawer quantities before layout starts.

Flexi-Bin Parts Rooms in Ogden and Northern Utah

South Ogden is about 35 miles north of our Salt Lake City office, and dealerships from Layton and Ogden up to Brigham City and Logan are a regular part of our Borroughs work. Northern Utah projects follow the same steps as this one: plans and photos, a site walk, layout revisions with Borroughs drawings, an order shipped direct from Borroughs, and an installation crew we coordinate. For the statewide picture, including models, components and planning notes, visit our Borroughs Flexi-Bin shelving in Utah page, or see the full Borroughs Flexi-Bin shelving guide.

Other Young Automotive Group stores have also worked with us. A Ford dealership in Brigham City is covered in our Brigham City parts room case study.

Flexi-Bin Parts Department FAQs

What did Young Subaru’s new parts department include?
Borroughs Flexi-Bin units with slide-in shelves and 3-inch sliding shelf dividers, Borroughs box-edge closed shelving with drawers and sliding dividers, Rivet-Span open shelving, Rivet-Span tire storage, a battery rack, stainless steel-topped work surfaces and yellow plastic shelf bins.
Can a dealership move its Flexi-Bin system into a new building?
Yes. Flexi-Bin is built from standard Borroughs components, so a new room can be laid out with the same frames, shelves and dividers the parts team already uses, in the same finish.
Where does Flexi-Bin fit compared with box-edge shelving?
Flexi-Bin is 12 inches deep and suits small parts kept in sequence. Deeper box-edge shelving suits larger boxed parts. Most dealership parts rooms use both, plus open shelving for bulk items.
Can Flexi-Bin shelves be moved after they are loaded?
Borroughs states Flexi-Bin shelves adjust on 1-1/2-inch increments, lock in place automatically and can be raised or lowered without disturbing their contents.
How long does a parts department project take?
It depends on the layout and Borroughs lead times. On this project, first contact was in June 2024, the order was placed in November after several layout revisions, and installation followed in December.
Do you serve dealerships in Ogden and northern Utah?
Yes. Our Salt Lake City team plans and coordinates Flexi-Bin projects from Logan and Brigham City to Ogden, Layton and the rest of the state. Call 801-328-8788.
