Who Uses a Wire Spool Carousel in Utah

Wire is the awkward inventory in an electrical branch. It is heavy, it comes on spools and reels of every diameter, it is sold by the foot as often as by the spool, and the fastest-moving sizes need to sit next to the counter. Along the Wasatch Front, where branch buildings are being squeezed by growth and the cost of square footage, the conventional answer of reel racks and floor stacks eats space that could hold conduit, fittings, lighting or a bigger will-call area.

The Vidir Wire Carousel is the vertical alternative Material Handling USA supplies from our Salt Lake City headquarters. It is a semi-automated machine: spools sit on rods inside carriers, the carriers rotate up and down inside a guarded frame, and the operator calls the spool they need to a pick opening at working height. This page is written for the Utah buyers we talk to most often:

  • Electrical supply branches in Salt Lake City, West Valley, Ogden, Orem, Lehi and St. George that sell cut wire across the counter.
  • Electrical contractors running a central warehouse that kits wire for jobsites.
  • Utilities and municipal shops holding cable reels for line and meter crews.
  • Panel builders, OEMs and aerospace suppliers along the I-15 corridor that stock many gauges of hook-up wire and cable.

Why Reel Racks Run Out of Room First

A reel rack is simple and cheap, and for a small branch it is often the right answer. The trouble starts when the SKU count grows. Every additional gauge, color and jacket type wants its own axle position, and every position is a spot on the floor that a forklift or a hand truck has to reach.

📏

Floor, not height

A reel rack uses two or three levels. The building above it, often 20 feet or more of clear height in newer Utah industrial space, stays empty.

🏋️

Heavy lifting at the rack

Loading a full spool onto a high axle is a two-person job with a real injury risk, so heavy spools end up on the floor instead.

🔍

Slow counter picks

The person at the counter walks to the rack, finds the right spool among look-alikes, pulls footage, and walks back. Multiply by every cut order in a day.

📦

Cluttered receiving

Inbound wire pallets wait in aisles because the rack is full, and partial spools accumulate wherever there is space.

🧰

Mixed reel sizes

Small spools of hook-up wire and 30-inch reels of feeder cable do not fit the same rack well, so one of them gets stored badly.

📊

Inventory blind spots

Footage remaining on a spool is a guess until someone measures it, and cycle counts mean climbing the rack.

Vidir Wire Carousel installed in an electrical wholesale warehouse holding cable reels

Vidir positions the Wire Carousel as a way to move that inventory off the floor and into the unused height of the building. On its product page Vidir states that stacking wire carriers vertically can recover up to 70 percent of the floor area compared with conventional cable-reel storage. The exact saving in your branch depends on how many spools you carry, how large they are and what you are storing them on today, which is why we start every Utah project with a spool count rather than a brochure figure.

Just as important for a counter operation, the carousel brings the spool to the person. The operator stays at the pick opening, the machine does the walking, and the cut station can sit right beside it.

How the Vidir Wire Carousel Works

Inside the frame is a series of carriers driven by chains on two towers. Each standard wire carrier holds three compartments Vidir calls wire bays, and each bay has seven interchangeable rod positions, so one carrier offers 21 places to hang a rod. Spools slide onto a rod, and a spring-loaded lock on the bay holds the rod in place until an operator releases it to load or remove a spool.

Because the rods move, one carrier can hold a few large spools or many small ones. For very small spools, Vidir’s Spinner Spool option is a rotating insert that fits within a single bay and provides up to 24 locations for spools up to 10 inches in diameter. That is how a branch stocks dozens of colors of THHN in a small footprint without wasting a full bay on each.

The operator selects a carrier at the keypad or controller, the carousel rotates by the shortest path, and the carrier stops at the opening. Vidir publishes a retrieval speed of 21 feet per minute and rates a standard carousel at 1,000 pounds per carrier and 13,000 pounds per unit, with two-inch mesh guarding front and back.

Where these numbers come from

Every specification on this page is taken from the Vidir Wire Carousel Sales Package or Vidir’s product page. Vidir builds each carousel to order, so treat the tables as the standard range and confirm your configuration on the quote drawing.

W39 or W45: Matching the Carousel to Your Spools and Your Ceiling

Vidir offers two standard wire carousel families. The difference is the height of the wire bay, which sets the largest spool each can hold, and the overall machine height, which has to fit under your roof structure, lights and sprinklers.

W39 carriers have bays 26.25 inches wide by 26.5 inches high and accept spools up to 24 inches in diameter. The standard range runs from a 5-carrier unit at 7 feet 11 inches tall to a 13-carrier unit at 19 feet 3 inches, all on a footprint of about 8 feet 9 inches wide by 6 feet 3 inches deep.

W45 carriers have bays 26.25 by 32.5 inches and accept spools up to 30 inches. The range runs from 9 feet 4 inches (5 carriers) to 21 feet 1 inch (12 carriers), roughly 8 feet 9 to 8 feet 11 inches wide by 7 feet 3 inches deep.

Vidir’s guidance is that when a spool is wider than 26.5 inches, a rolled-goods carousel should be considered instead, and true outliers belong on the HD Wire Reel Dispenser described below. In practice, most Utah supply branches land on a W45 for feeder and service-entrance cable or a W39 for a branch-circuit and low-voltage mix. Our wire carousel sizing guide walks through the reel-inventory math in more detail.

Family Bay size (W x H) Max spool Carriers Overall height range Footprint (W x D)
W39 26.25 x 26.5 in 24 in 5 to 13 7 ft 11 in to 19 ft 3 in 8 ft 9 in x 6 ft 3 in
W45 26.25 x 32.5 in 30 in 5 to 12 9 ft 4 in to 21 ft 1 in 8 ft 9 in to 8 ft 11 in x 7 ft 3 in

Height is usually the deciding constraint in an existing branch. Measure to the lowest obstruction over the proposed spot, not to the deck, and note anything that hangs down: sprinkler branch lines, unit heaters, light fixtures, roll-up door tracks. The clearance the installer needs above the machine is confirmed on the quote drawing, so we ask for those measurements up front and, where it makes sense, visit the branch to check them.

Measuring, Cutting and Payout at the Counter

Storing wire vertically only pays off if the cut order gets faster too. Vidir builds several dispensing accessories around the carousel so the carrier that arrives at the opening can be paid out, measured and cut without moving the spool:

  • Hanger Meter Slider: a cut, measure and re-roll unit mounted to the carousel on a slider, so it can dispense from any of the three bays of the home carrier. Vidir rates it for flexible materials from 1/64 to 7/8 inch and stiff material to 1/2 inch, with a counter, cutter and re-roller.
  • 1400 Wire Reel Cart: the same cut, measure and re-roll function on an independent cart that rolls into position when needed.
  • 1700 Wire Reel Cart: a measure and re-roll cart for larger product from 1/2 to 2 inches.
  • Adjustable Wire Loading Dolly: moves spools up to 24 inches and 250 pounds to and from the carousel so nobody carries a full spool.

For the reels that are too big for any carousel, Vidir’s HD Wire Reel Dispenser is a floor platform with a built-in roller brake for reels from 16 to 48 inches in diameter and up to 2,000 pounds. A common Utah branch layout pairs one carousel for spooled product with a dispenser or two for the big feeder reels beside it, and the Cart Wire Merchandizer, a caster dolly rated for spools to 500 pounds, moves product between them.

Placing the carousel is a workflow decision. Branches that sell most of their wire across the counter put the pick opening within a few steps of will-call. Contractor warehouses that kit wire for jobs usually place it near the staging area, so cut lengths go straight onto the job cart. Either way, plan the cut station, a scrap bin and a place for partial spools as part of the footprint.

Utah Site Checklist Before You Order

Most delays on carousel projects trace back to the building, not the machine. These are the items we work through with Utah customers before a quote is finalized.

  • Power. Vidir specifies 3-phase service, either 208/230 V at 15 A or 460/480 V at 10 A, fed from the top right of the carousel. Confirm which you have and where the nearest panel is; an electrician runs the circuit before the installer arrives.
  • Clear height. Measured to the lowest obstruction, with a photo of anything overhead. This decides W39 versus W45 and the carrier count.
  • Floor. A level concrete slab in sound condition. Anchoring details are specified with the machine; Utah adopts the International Building Code with state amendments and sits in a seismic region, so the local building department or your engineer may want to review anchorage for a tall piece of equipment. Ask early rather than after delivery.
  • Sprinklers. Dense storage changes the picture for fire protection. Vidir offers a full solid enclosure partly for this reason; whether it is needed is a question for your fire marshal or sprinkler contractor, not something a storage vendor decides.
  • Access for delivery. Dock or drive-in door dimensions, the route from the door to the spot, and whether a forklift with adequate capacity is available on site.
  • Spool inventory. A list of what you stock by spool diameter, width and weight, plus the handful of SKUs that turn fastest. This sets the rod layout and whether Spinner Spools make sense.
  • Controls and data. Keypad only, or a controller and barcode workflow tied to your branch system. See the next section.

5

Loading and training

Spools are loaded by bay according to the layout, and operators are walked through retrieval, loading and the safety features.

Installation scope varies: some customers take a supplied-only carousel and have their own installer set it, others want the full service. Both are quoted plainly, and our vertical storage installation services page describes what a full install involves. Winter deliveries along the Wasatch Front are routine; a dry, snow-free dock apron on the day matters more than the season.

Inventory Control: From Keypad to Branch System

Two Vidir vertical carousels loaded with electrical wire and cable drums installed side by side in a warehouse

A standard carousel is called by carrier number from a keypad, which is enough for a branch where the counter staff know the layout. Vidir’s automation package replaces the push buttons with a smart controller that offers password protection, carrier selection, a manual jog and a help function.

Distributors that want footage tracking have two published routes. Vidir’s Small Business Solution adds a touchscreen controller, barcode scanning and a pick-to-zone system with inventory software running on the controller itself. The standalone Vidir Inventory Software (VIS) runs on a Windows terminal on the same local network and supports order picking, transaction history, bin management, real-time counts and multiple carousels. For branches already on an enterprise system, Vidir publishes an API so the carousel can take commands from your own software.

Whichever level you choose, the practical advice is the same: decide before the layout is fixed, because a barcode workflow changes how bays are assigned. Ongoing support for controls and wear parts is covered on our Vidir parts and service support page.

Wire Storage Projects in Utah and the Mountain West

Material Handling USA has supplied Vidir wire carousels to electrical distributors, contractors, utilities and manufacturers across the region, and racked out Utah electrical warehouses where a carousel was one piece of a larger storage plan. A few examples that are relevant to a Utah branch:

Utah Wire Carousel FAQs

Does Material Handling USA supply Vidir wire carousels in Utah?
Yes. We are headquartered in Salt Lake City and supply Vidir Wire Carousels to electrical distributors, contractors, utilities and manufacturers across Utah, with installation available. Call 801-328-8788 to start with a spool count and ceiling measurement.
What size spools fit a Vidir Wire Carousel?
Per Vidir’s published specifications, W39 models accept spools up to 24 inches in diameter and W45 models up to 30 inches. Spools wider than 26.5 inches are better suited to a rolled-goods carousel, and reels from 16 to 48 inches can go on Vidir’s HD Wire Reel Dispenser beside the carousel.
How tall is a wire carousel?
Vidir’s standard W39 range runs from about 7 feet 11 inches to 19 feet 3 inches and the W45 range from 9 feet 4 inches to 21 feet 1 inch, depending on carrier count. Installer clearance above the machine is confirmed on the quote drawing, so measure to your lowest overhead obstruction.
What power does it need?
Vidir specifies 3-phase power: 208/230 V at 15 A or 460/480 V at 10 A, 60 Hz, fed from the top right of the carousel. Your electrician runs the circuit before installation.
Can we measure and cut wire at the carousel?
Yes. Vidir offers the Hanger Meter Slider mounted to the carousel and the 1400 and 1700 Wire Reel Carts, all with counters and re-rollers, so cut orders are paid out at the pick opening without moving the spool.
Do we need a permit or engineering in Utah?
It depends on the jurisdiction and the machine height. Utah adopts the International Building Code with state amendments and is a seismic region, so some building departments want to review anchorage for tall equipment. We recommend asking your local building department early; we can provide the drawings they typically request.
Can the carousel track footage and connect to our branch system?
Vidir publishes several options: a smart controller, the Small Business Solution with touchscreen, barcode scanning and built-in inventory software, the standalone Vidir Inventory Software, and an API for integration with an existing enterprise system.
