Borroughs Flexi-Bin Frames for Murdock Chevrolet in Logan, Utah

Murdock Chevrolet already had plenty of Flexi-Bin shelves. What its parts room needed was more frames to put them in. Here is how a frames-only order, built back to back with shared back panels, went from a web quote request to a signed order in one business day.

Project Snapshot

Murdock Chevrolet is a Chevrolet dealership in Logan, Utah, in the Cache Valley north of the Wasatch Front. Its parts department already worked with Borroughs Flexi-Bin shelving, the shallow, divided steel shelving Borroughs designed for small automotive parts. In early 2021 the parts room needed more Flexi-Bin units, and the dealership had a clear idea of exactly which pieces it was missing.

Our role Local Borroughs dealer: factory quote with freight, quote revision, ordering and delivery coordination. The dealership assembled the frames itself

This case study is based on the Borroughs quote request, our quote, the Borroughs purchase order and invoice, and our email correspondence with the dealership. We do not publish quantities, pricing, contacts or room layouts for customer projects.

The Request: More Frames, Not More Shelves

The project started on the Borroughs website. In February 2021 the dealership’s general manager sent Borroughs a quote request for Flexi-Bin frames in Industrial Gray, with a short note: the frames would be assembled back to back, so fewer back panels would be needed. Borroughs sells through local dealers, so it forwarded the request to our Salt Lake City team as the Borroughs dealer for Utah.

We asked Borroughs for factory pricing with freight to Logan and sent the dealership our quote. The reply that came back the same morning set the direction for the whole order. The dealership needed the top, bottom and sides of each frame only. It already had plenty of Flexi-Bin shelves, and the new frames would stand back to back so they could share the back piece.

That is a very specific request, and it is a common one in established parts departments. Over the years a parts room collects spare shelves: from a reconfiguration, from units that were taken down, or from runs where openings were re-spaced and a shelf came out. When those shelves are Flexi-Bin shelves, the cheapest way to add storage is often to buy only the steel that holds them. The dealership knew its inventory of spare parts for its own shelving and ordered around it.

Why a Frames-Only Flexi-Bin Order Works

A frames-only order is possible because Borroughs builds Flexi-Bin from separate components. The frame is the structure: a bin top, a bin bottom, two bin sides and a bin back. The shelves, sliding dividers and drawers are separate parts that go inside it. Borroughs also sells the same frames as preconfigured units, numbered FB101 through FB108, which bundle a frame with a set mix of shelves, dividers and drawers.

Borroughs Flexi-Bin preconfigured units FB101 to FB108. Each is a standard frame with a different mix of shelves, dividers and drawers. Murdock Chevrolet ordered the frame components on their own.
Borroughs part Component Role in the frame
04445-099 Bin top Closes the top of the frame and ties the sides together
02718-099 Bin bottom, automotive Forms the base of the frame
04611-099 Bin sides, 84 in Slotted side panels that carry the slide-in shelves
04614-099 Bin back, 84 in Closes the rear of the frame. On this order, one back served each back-to-back pair
Not ordered Slide-in shelves (02720-099), dividers, drawers Reused from the dealership’s existing Flexi-Bin stock

Part numbers are taken from the Borroughs purchase order and invoice and cross-checked against the Borroughs Flexi-Bin literature. The frame model was the 12-inch-deep, 84-inch-high PBF-12-84.

Slide-in shelves move between frames

Hand sliding a Borroughs Flexi-Bin slide-in shelf into a Flexi-Bin frame

Flexi-Bin shelves are slide-in shelves. Borroughs states they adjust on 1-1/2-inch increments, lock in place automatically and are rated at 150 lbs each. Because a shelf slides into the slotted side panels instead of bolting to posts, a shelf taken out of one Flexi-Bin frame can go into another frame of the same depth.

That is what made this order practical. The new frames gave the dealership’s spare shelves a home, and the parts team could space the openings to suit the parts going into them as they loaded the new units.

The automotive bin bottom

The bottom on this order was the Borroughs automotive bin bottom (02718-099), the same bottom part that appears on other dealership Flexi-Bin orders we have supplied. When you add frames to an existing run, matching the bottom and the frame height keeps the new units level with the old ones, so shelf openings and labels line up across the aisle.

Matching an existing finish

The frames were ordered in Borroughs Industrial Gray. Borroughs lists black, blue, industrial gray, mist gray, pebble, red and white as Flexi-Bin colors. When existing shelves go into new frames, it is worth confirming the color of the shelves as well as the frames, so the finished run looks like one system rather than two.

Back to Back With Shared Back Panels

The dealership planned to stand the new frames back to back, so that a run of Flexi-Bin could be picked from both sides of an aisle. When two frames face away from each other, a single back panel between them closes off both. The dealership asked for one back for each facing pair instead of one back for every frame.

The first pricing from the factory included a back panel for every frame, because that is how a Flexi-Bin frame is normally supplied. Once the dealership confirmed the back-to-back plan, we asked Borroughs to revise the quote with half the back panels, and the revised quote came back within the hour. The dealership signed it the same morning.

The lesson is simple. A standard frame quote assumes standard frames. If you are building double-sided runs, say so at quote time so the back panel count matches the plan, and confirm with Borroughs that the shared-back arrangement suits your run before you order.

Back-to-back runs are common in dealership parts rooms because they put two picking faces on one footprint. They also raise the questions that single-sided runs along a wall do not: how the run is stabilized, whether it is anchored, and how wide the aisles on each side need to be for the parts team and the parts carts they use.

From Web Request to Delivery

1

Quote request

Early February 2021: the dealership requests a Flexi-Bin frame quote on the Borroughs website. Borroughs forwards it to us as the local Utah dealer.

2

Quote and revision

We request factory pricing with freight to Logan and send our quote. The dealership confirms frames only, shared backs, and we have the quote revised the same day.

3

Order and shipment

The dealership signs that morning and we place the order with Borroughs. Borroughs ships by freight to the dealership in Logan in early March 2021.

Borroughs quoted a lead time of about four weeks for Flexi-Bin products at the time, and the order shipped close to that. Lead times change with factory schedules, so we confirm the current one on every quote. The order was supply only. The dealership told us it would assemble the frames itself, which is realistic for a parts team adding units of a system it already knows. We did not install this order, and we have no photos of the finished run, so this page uses representative Borroughs photos.

We followed up with the dealership after the order and again at the one-year mark to see whether it needed anything else. We did not receive written feedback about results for this case study, so we are not publishing claims about picking speed or space gained.

Lessons for Adding to an Existing Flexi-Bin Parts Room

The points below are general guidance from our Flexi-Bin work, not details of the Murdock Chevrolet parts room. They are the questions we ask any dealership that wants to extend Flexi-Bin it already owns.

  • Count what you already have. Spare shelves, dividers and drawers can go into new frames. Knowing the count before you ask for a quote keeps you from paying for parts you own.
  • Match the frame height and depth. Flexi-Bin frames are 12 inches deep, and Borroughs lists 84-inch and 96-inch frame heights. Matching the height keeps shelf openings and labels in line with the existing run.
  • Match the bottom. Ask which bin bottom your existing units use, so new frames sit at the same level.
  • Say how the frames will stand. Single-sided along a wall, end to end in a run, or back to back. Back-to-back runs can change the back panel count.
  • Confirm the color. Check both frame and shelf colors if old shelves are going into new frames.
  • Plan assembly. Decide early whether your team or an installer will assemble the frames, and who handles anchoring.
  • Ask about lead time. Flexi-Bin ships from Borroughs, so confirm the current lead time when you order.

Anchoring back-to-back runs. Tall shelving in Utah is commonly anchored to the floor, and Borroughs offers a post foot angle for Flexi-Bin posts. Your local building official sets the requirement for your building. Our parts room shelving anchoring guide covers the usual questions for Utah dealerships, including back-to-back runs.

Need more than frames? If your parts room needs drawers, dividers or a full new layout rather than an add-on, the Borroughs automotive shelving range covers the rest of a dealership parts department.

When a frames-only order is not the right answer

Borroughs Flexi-Bin shelves with sliding dividers and labels holding bagged small parts

Reusing shelves makes sense when the shelves are genuine Flexi-Bin slide-in shelves of the right depth and in good condition. Bent shelves, shelves from a different Borroughs line, or shelves from another manufacturer will not slide into Flexi-Bin side panels properly. In that case we price complete preconfigured units or new shelves with the frames, and we will tell you which costs less.

The same applies when a parts room has outgrown its layout. Adding frames to the end of a crowded run can make aisles tighter. Sometimes a short layout review, with photos of the room and a rough parts count, shows a better place for new units than the obvious one.

Flexi-Bin for Logan and Cache Valley Dealerships

Logan is about 80 miles north of our Salt Lake City office. For Cache Valley dealerships, Borroughs ships Flexi-Bin by freight directly to the site, so a small add-on order like this one does not need a site visit. Larger projects, such as a new parts department, usually start with building plans and photos, and we can plan a visit when the layout calls for one. For the statewide picture, including models, components and planning notes, see Borroughs Flexi-Bin shelving in Utah, or read the full Borroughs Flexi-Bin shelving guide.

Dealerships along the northern Wasatch Front can also see our Borroughs automotive shelving in Ogden page for parts-room planning in that area.

Flexi-Bin Frame Add-On FAQs

What did Murdock Chevrolet order?
Borroughs Flexi-Bin frame components in Industrial Gray: bin tops, automotive bin bottoms, bin sides and bin back panels for the 12-inch-deep, 84-inch-high PBF-12-84 frame. No shelves were ordered because the dealership reused Flexi-Bin shelves it already owned.
Can I buy Borroughs Flexi-Bin frames without shelves?
Yes. Flexi-Bin is built from separate components, so frames, shelves, dividers and drawers can be quoted separately. Tell us what you already own and we will quote only what you need.
Do back-to-back Flexi-Bin frames need two back panels?
On this project the dealership stood its frames back to back with one shared back panel per pair, and Borroughs revised the quote to match. Confirm the arrangement for your run at quote time.
Will my existing Flexi-Bin shelves fit new frames?
Genuine Flexi-Bin slide-in shelves of the same depth fit Flexi-Bin frames. Shelves from other Borroughs lines or other manufacturers will not. Send us a photo or part number and we will check.
How long does a Flexi-Bin order take?
Flexi-Bin ships from Borroughs. In 2021 the quoted lead time was about four weeks, and this order shipped close to that. We confirm the current lead time on every quote.
Do you serve dealerships in Logan and Cache Valley?
