What Are Hallowell MedSafe Cabinets?
Industrial steel cabinets with a germ-resistant finish, built for rooms where cleanliness and locked storage both matter.
MedSafe is Hallowell’s antimicrobial finish. On these cabinets it is applied to the 800 Series industrial knock-down (KD) cabinet, a heavy-gauge steel cabinet with welded frame members, a 3-point locking handle and full-height door stiffeners.
The antimicrobial agent is part of a specially formulated powder coat. Hallowell says it inhibits the growth of bacteria, mold, yeast and mildew for up to 20 years, which is why the line is aimed at medical facilities and other places where microbes are a concern.

Wardrobe and combination cabinets for staff areas
The wardrobe and combination models give a care unit, EVS closet or lab one locked cabinet for coats, scrubs and personal items alongside supplies. The combination cabinet is the most flexible: shelves for supplies on the left, hanging space on the right.

Using MedSafe Cabinets for Medication Storage
A locked steel cabinet is the right tool for many medications and supplies, but not for every one. Here is where it fits.
Most facilities need more locked, cleanable storage than their med room has: bulk and back stock, over-the-counter medications, wound care, IV supplies, sample stock and patient-belongings overflow. A full-height MedSafe storage cabinet holds a lot of that in a 36 x 18-inch footprint, behind a key lock.

Controlled substances need their own plan
DEA rules at 21 CFR 1301.75 require practitioners to store controlled substances in a securely locked, substantially constructed cabinet, and many state boards and hospital policies add double locks, access logs or a caged room. Hallowell does not market MedSafe as a narcotic cabinet. Ask your pharmacist in charge what your registration requires, then see the options in the comparison below.
How to size a medication storage cabinet
Count what goes in
List the cartons, bins and binders you store today and what overflows onto counters or the floor.
Pick the interior
Storage for shelved stock, combination if staff also need hanging space, wardrobe for garments.
Check the room
Allow for 78-inch height, door swing in front of the 18-inch depth, and clear sprinkler heads.
Plan access
Decide who holds keys, and whether the cabinet should be anchored to the wall or floor.
