Capacities are Hallowell's published per-shelf (Hi-Tech, H-Post) and per-level (Rivetwell) ratings for the listed units; Hallowell notes its H-Post shelf ratings use a 1.65 safety factor. A 36"-wide shelf carries more than a 48"-wide shelf of the same duty. Real system capacity also depends on post height, shelf spacing and anchoring. Hallowell also builds High Capacity Die Shelving (bolted and boltless) and Duratech pass-thru shelving, which we quote per application.

Hi-Tech and H-Post: one bolted system, two strengths

Hi-Tech is Hallowell's core bolted steel shelving line. Every shelf has a welded box beam front and rear, triple-bend side flanges and lapped, welded corners, and it is punched to take dividers. H-Post units use the same shelves, so you can mix standard Hi-Tech sections and high-capacity sections in one layout. Choose H-Posts when rows run taller than 87", carry heavy parts or support a second level.

Both build from starter and adder units, so long rows share posts and cost less per section. They can stand alone or bolt side by side and back to back. Need open shelving you can order online today? See our steel shelving guide.

How to Choose the Right Hallowell Shelving

Photo: Hallowell

Start with what you store, not the shelf

Most Hallowell projects start with three numbers: the heaviest item per shelf, the largest item size, and the clear height of the room. Those three settle the line, the shelf duty and how tall each unit can go. After that, think about access. Open shelving is fastest to pick from. Closed units with panels and doors protect contents, and bin units keep small parts organized.

The rows in this parts room show closed Hallowell bin shelving next to open units, a common mix when fast-moving spares and bulk stock share one space. Match each item type to the line below.

Small parts, fasteners and MRO spares

Pick Hi-Tech bin shelving. The 12 preset divider layouts give you anywhere from a few large cubbies to dozens of 6" x 6" openings, and bin fronts and label holders keep small items from spilling into the aisle. Compare other bin systems on our bin shelving page.

Secure or dust-sensitive storage

Use closed Hi-Tech shelving with side and back panels in 24 or 18 gauge steel. Add swinging doors with built-in key locks, 3-point latching and a 150° opening for tools, evidence, IT spares or controlled supplies.

Heavy parts, motors and die sets

Go with extra-heavy-duty shelves on H-Posts, rated up to 1,250 lb per shelf on 36"-wide units. For dies and molds, Hallowell's High Capacity Die Shelving is the better fit. We size it once we have your heaviest single item.

Bulk cartons, archive boxes and long items

Choose Rivetwell boltless shelving. Spans run up to 96" wide and 48" deep, and the rivet beams drop in with a mallet, which keeps assembly fast. See how boltless units compare on our rivet shelving guide.

Open decks for light, air and visibility

Order Rivetwell with flat wire decking (4-gauge wire on a 2" x 4" grid) or galvanized EZ-Deck steel planks instead of 5/8" particleboard. Wire decks shed dust and let light through. See rivet shelving with wire deck, and check decking requirements with your fire marshal.

Out of floor space

Build up with a two-tier or multi-level system on H-Post or Rivetwell posts, with a walkway deck and stairs. If you need open floor area or forklift loads on the upper level, compare a structural storage mezzanine first.

Hallowell Shelving Applications

Hallowell steel and boltless shelving shows up wherever parts, supplies, records or bulk cartons need dense, organized storage. These are the most common uses we plan for, with a guide to each:

Multi-Level, High Bay and Deck-Over Hallowell Systems

When a room has the height but not the floor space, Hallowell shelving can become the structure for a second storage level.

Two-tier and multi-level Hallowell systems

Hallowell designs its shelving to go past a single level. Taller posts are spliced, and the shelving units themselves hold up an elevated walkway, so a second or third tier of storage sits on the same footprint. Rivetwell systems use deck-over and down-aisle grating supports. H-Post systems add cross-aisle supports and heavy-duty foot plates.

These systems work well for parts distribution, records centers and maintenance storerooms where items are hand-picked from both levels. Stairs, handrails and any gates are planned with the shelving.

High bay, deck-over or a mezzanine?

High bay rows run tall single-level units, picked with a rolling ladder or order picker. Deck-over covers the whole installation with a walkway grid. A structural mezzanine stands on its own columns, so the upper floor can carry pallets or open work areas and the shelving below can change later.

We often lay out both options for the same building so you can compare cost, permitting and future flexibility. Multi-level and deck-over systems usually need engineering and a building permit, and we help gather the drawings and load data your building department asks for.

Hallowell Shelving Layout, Delivery and Installation

MH-USA designs, supplies and installs Hallowell shelving systems, from a single parts room to multi-level installations. Here is how a typical project runs.

1

Share your space and loads

Send room dimensions or a floor plan, ceiling height, door and column locations, and what you store: heaviest item, largest item and rough quantities.

2

Get a Hallowell layout

MH-USA lays out the rows, aisle widths, unit heights and Hallowell line for each zone, plus accessories such as doors, dividers, label holders and wall or top ties.

3

Review the quote

You get one quote covering shelving, freight and installation. Many standard units ship through Hallowell's Quickship program, and we confirm current availability and ship dates when we quote.

4

Delivery and installation

Our installation team assembles, levels and anchors the system per Hallowell's instructions, adds row spacers and ties, and walks the finished layout with you.

Planning tip: leave room for growth. Each added adder unit makes a row longer by the shelf width plus the shared post, and Hallowell publishes row-length tables for this. We size rows to your wall-to-wall dimensions so the last unit fits. Shopping for comparable boltless units to buy online instead? Start with our boltless shelving page.

Compare and Choose: Hallowell vs. Standard Steel Shelving

Heavier-Duty H-Post Uprights

Hallowell H-Post uprights are formed from 14-gauge cold-rolled steel in a tubular profile that Hallowell rates at more than twice the load capacity of standard posts. When you compare quotes, ask for the post gauge and profile, not just the shelf rating.

Rated Capacities, Box-Beam Shelves

Hallowell’s published shelf capacities are based on a 1.65 safety factor, and its heavy-duty shelves use a welded box beam front and rear with triple-bend side flanges. Ask other suppliers what safety factor sits behind their numbers so you compare like for like.

Warranty in Writing

Under Hallowell’s published terms, shelving carries a one-year warranty from the date of invoice. MH-USA can include those written terms with your quote so you can compare warranty coverage side by side before you order.

Made in USA, Quickship Options

Hallowell shelving is manufactured in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Select items are part of Hallowell’s Quickship program; eligibility and ship dates change, so MH-USA confirms availability and lead time on every quote.

FAQ's

Hallowell is a division of List Industries and builds its shelving in the USA, at its plant in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Hi-Tech shelves have a welded tubular box beam front and rear, triple-bend side flanges and welded corners. Hi-Tech and H-Post units share the same shelves and accessories, so a system can grow from a few units to a multi-level installation. Hallowell also runs a Quickship program on in-stock shelving items. MH-USA confirms current availability and lead time with your quote.

Yes. Hi-Tech and H-Post shelving comes as starter and adder units (an adder shares posts with the unit next to it), in open or closed styles, freestanding or bolted side by side and back to back. Shelves adjust on 1-1/2 inch centers, posts can be spliced for extra height, and accessories include full and partial dividers, label holders, locking swinging doors and footplates. Rivetwell boltless beams also adjust in 1-1/2 inch steps. Send us your room dimensions and MH-USA will lay out the rows and aisles.

Hallowell builds for heavy daily use. H-Posts are 14-gauge cold-rolled steel in a tubular shape that Hallowell rates at more than twice the load capacity of standard posts, and its published shelf capacities are based on a 1.65 safety factor. Parts are finished with an automated powder-coat paint system. Long service life still depends on staying within the rated load, so we size shelf duty to your heaviest items.

Hi-Tech open and closed shelving is common in parts rooms, tool cribs, maintenance storerooms and records rooms. H-Post shelving suits tall rows, heavy bulk storage and multi-level systems in warehouses and distribution centers. Rivetwell boltless shelving fits wide cartons, records boxes and back-room bulk storage. Hallowell also makes MedSafe antimicrobial Hi-Tech shelving for healthcare supply rooms. The applications section above covers each use in more detail.

Single units are straightforward. Each Hi-Tech shelf installs with four shelf clips, and Rivetwell boltless shelving needs no bolts: the beam rivets tap into keyhole slots in the posts with a rubber mallet. Hallowell publishes assembly instructions for each line. Long rows, tall units that need anchoring and multi-level systems should be laid out and installed by an experienced crew, and MH-USA can handle that installation.

Hallowell’s published terms give shelving a one-year warranty from the date of invoice, the same as its other non-locker products. Some lockers carry longer coverage, and distributed items such as locks keep their original manufacturer’s warranty. Warranty terms vary by product line, so we confirm the coverage for your exact products with your quote.

Yes. Send us your item sizes, shelf loads and room dimensions (a photo or rough sketch helps). MH-USA will recommend the right line (Hi-Tech, H-Post or Rivetwell), the shelf duty and the layout, then quote the full system and installation. Call (800) 326-4403 or request a free quote.

Hi-Tech steel shelving suits general parts, supplies and records, H-Post high-capacity shelving is built for heavier bulk loads, and Rivetwell boltless shelving suits wide cartons and fast assembly. Share your loads, item sizes and room dimensions and MH-USA will recommend a line and layout.

Hallowell states that its metal products are GREENGUARD Gold certified for low chemical emissions, and that most of the steel it uses is bought from U.S. mills and contains recycled content. Ask us for the current certification documents if your project needs them for a specification or LEED submittal.

Both use the same Hi-Tech box-beam shelves and accessories. Standard Hi-Tech units use beaded front posts and angle back posts. H-Post units use 14-gauge tubular H-posts that Hallowell rates at more than twice the load capacity of standard posts, which makes them the choice for tall rows, heavy loads and multi-level systems.

It depends on the line, width and shelf duty. Hallowell publishes 350-500 lb per shelf for medium-duty Hi-Tech, 400-800 lb for heavy-duty and 750-1,250 lb for extra-heavy-duty, with 36″-wide shelves rated higher than 48″. Rivetwell boltless units are rated about 500-750 lb per level, or up to 1,400 lb with center supports on 48″ heavy-duty units. We confirm ratings for your exact configuration before quoting.

Rivetwell levels take 5/8″ industrial-grade particleboard, EZ-Deck galvanized steel planks (22 gauge) or flat wire decking (4-gauge wire on a 2″ x 4″ grid). All three simply drop into the beams. Wire decking lets light and air through. Particleboard gives a solid, low-cost surface for boxes.

Yes. Hallowell offers single-level, multi-level, high bay and deck-over configurations. Posts are spliced for height, and the shelving supports an elevated walkway with stairs and handrails. These systems are engineered per project and usually need a permit. MH-USA lays them out and installs them, and we can also compare the cost against a structural mezzanine.
