The Customer: Beau Distribution, Louisiana

Beau Distribution is a Louisiana distributor of Cortec VpCI (vapor phase corrosion inhibitor) products. Its website also lists fabrication and crating and preservation services.

Corrosion control is a world of metal parts, valves, fittings and equipment that have to stay clean, dry and identifiable between the shop, the warehouse and the job site. Heavy-duty zipper bags are one of the everyday consumables in that kind of work.

Beau Distribution came to mh-usa.com and placed one online order for three sizes of MH-USA 6 mil reclosable poly bags — 5 x 7, 8 x 12 and 10 x 12 in. — bought by the full case. No custom printing, no minimum run and no sales call: stock heavy-duty bags in a small, practical size range.

Shared with the customer’s business name only. We never publish contact names, addresses, order numbers or order values, and we do not publish how a customer uses what it buys — the applications below are typical uses for heavy-duty bags, not a description of Beau’s own process. Size (inside) Film Case pack Product page
5 x 7 in. 6 mil 1,000 bags 5 x 7 in. 6 mil reclosable bags

10 x 12 in. 6 mil 500 bags 10 x 12 in. 6 mil reclosable bags

All three come from the same 6 mil family, which runs from tiny 2 x 3 in. bags up to 30 x 30 in. on the 6 mil reclosable bag category page. Because every size uses the same film and zipper, a buyer can add or swap a size later without changing how the bags look or perform.

Why Choose 6 Mil? Bag Thickness for Industrial Parts

A mil is one thousandth of an inch (0.001 in.). A 6 mil bag wall is 0.006 in. thick — three times the film in a standard 2 mil zipper bag.

Three empty heavy-duty clear reclosable zipper bags in small, medium and large sizes on a steel workbench

Most retail and office zipper bags are 2 mil. That is plenty for paperwork, small hardware or food items, but industrial parts are different: threads, burrs, flange edges and the weight of steel all work against thin film. According to the product listing, MH-USA 6 mil reclosable bags are heavy-duty and puncture resistant, with a single-track zipper that extends the full width of the bag to keep products clean and free from moisture. They can be reopened and reused, and the listing notes they meet FDA and USDA requirements.

For a distributor or fabrication shop, that combination matters: a bag that survives a toolbox, a parts bin or a crate without splitting, and that can be opened for inspection and resealed instead of replaced.

Film thickness Typical use Where it falls short Shop
2 mil Documents, light hardware, retail and food items Sharp or heavy parts can puncture it 2 mil bags
4 mil General parts, kits, samples, inventory bags Very heavy or sharp-edged metal 4 mil bags
6 mil Machined parts, fittings, fasteners, tools, repeated reuse Costs more per bag than 2–4 mil 6 mil bags
8 mil The heaviest or sharpest parts; large bags carrying weight Stiffer; usually more than small parts need 8 mil bags

Mil is not the same as gauge: poly film is often sold by gauge (100 gauge = 1 mil). Our mil to gauge conversion guide explains the difference, and the flat poly bags guide covers open-top bags if you heat-seal or tape bags shut instead of using a zipper.

Building a Three-Size Bag Lineup

Beau’s order is a good model: one small, one medium and one larger size covers most parts without stocking dozens of SKUs.

MH-USA lists reclosable bag sizes as inside usable dimensions, width first, then length from the bottom to the zipper. To pick sizes, measure the parts you bag most often at their widest and longest points, then add room for the thickness of the part — a bag has to wrap around a part, so a 1 in. thick fitting uses up roughly that much of both the width and the length. When in doubt, test one case before committing to a pallet.

1

List your top parts

Pull the 10–20 items you bag most often and note length, width and thickness.

2

Group, then pick one bag per group

Most lists fall into three clusters. For each, choose the smallest bag that fits the largest part with the zipper still closing flat.

3

Match the film

Use 6 mil (or 8 mil) where parts are heavy or sharp; 4 mil is often enough for lighter kits.

4

Order by the case

Small sizes usually come 1,000 per case and larger sizes 500 or fewer, so storage space stays predictable.

Size group Example 6 mil sizes in the store Typical contents
Small 3 x 5, 4 x 6, 5 x 7 in. Fasteners, O-rings, small fittings, labels and tags
Medium 6 x 9, 8 x 10, 8 x 12 in. Valve parts, gauges, instruction sheets with hardware
Large 10 x 12, 12 x 15, 12 x 18 in. Larger fittings, tool sets, multi-part kits
Extra large 16 x 20 in. up to 30 x 30 in. Bulky components, soft goods, crate inner bags

Corrosion Protection: When a Standard Poly Bag Is Not Enough

A clear poly bag keeps out dust, dirt and handling moisture, but it does not stop rust by itself. That is the job of VCI (volatile corrosion inhibitor) packaging.

Bare steel sealed in an ordinary bag can still rust if moisture is trapped inside or the part sits through humid storage. VCI packaging adds a corrosion inhibitor that protects metal surfaces inside the package. The MH-USA store carries several forms:

  • VCI reclosable bags — film embedded with a corrosion inhibitor; parts go straight in, no wrapping.
  • VCI paper — wraps or covers ferrous parts; listed at one square foot per cubic foot of package space.
  • VCI sheeting and stretch wrap — for large or irregular metal items.

The VCI poly sheeting listing cites corrosion protection for up to 12 months indoors and up to 6 months outdoors, and the VCI reclosable bags are transparent, so parts can be identified and picked without opening the package. A simple rule of thumb: use clear 6 mil reclosable bags when the priority is cleanliness, identification and toughness, and step up to VCI bags or VCI paper when bare ferrous metal will be stored or shipped for weeks or months. Many shops use both — VCI paper around a part, then a heavy-duty bag around the paper for puncture resistance and handling.

Heavy-Duty Bags in Crating, Kitting and Preservation Work

Wherever metal goods are packed for storage or long-distance shipment, small parts get bagged so nothing goes missing.

Workers placing a film-wrapped industrial pump into an open plywood shipping crate on wooden skids

When a large item such as a pump, valve or skid is crated, its loose items — bolts, gaskets, small fittings, manuals — are usually bagged and secured inside the crate so they arrive with the equipment. Heavy-duty zipper bags are well suited to this because they can be opened for inspection at the destination and closed again.

  • Bag loose hardware by assembly, not all together, so installers find parts fast
  • Use a printed white-block parts bag or a separate tag to record part number and quantity
  • Add VCI paper or a VCI bag for bare steel that will sit in storage
  • Fill voids with kraft paper so heavy items cannot shift in the crate
  • Secure the bag to the crate or main item so it cannot work loose

For the outer layers, see our stretch wrap and shrink film and edge protectors and corner boards pages, and bubble and protective packaging for finished surfaces. Color-coded bags help separate kits by job or destination, and pink anti-static bags are the right choice when a shipment includes electronic controls or sensors.

The Industrial Bag Reorder Playbook

What a three-size, buy-by-the-case order teaches any distributor, fabricator or maintenance department.

1

Standardize on one film

Pick one thickness for parts work (often 6 mil) so every bag on the shelf behaves the same.

2

Keep the size ladder short

Three sizes cover most needs; add a fourth only when parts keep landing between sizes.

3

Know case counts, bundle the rest

1,000 small or 500 larger bags per case sets your reorder rhythm; add VCI paper, parts bags and tape to the same order.

4

Ask for volume pricing

When usage is steady, send monthly quantities by size for case or pallet pricing with freight.

Heavy-Duty Reclosable Bags: FAQ

What did Beau Distribution order?
One online order for three sizes of MH-USA 6 mil reclosable poly bags: 5 x 7, 8 x 12 and 10 x 12 in., bought by the full case.
What does 6 mil mean on a poly bag?
Mil is a thickness unit equal to 0.001 in. A 6 mil bag has walls 0.006 in. thick, three times the film of a standard 2 mil zipper bag, which makes it much more resistant to punctures from threads, edges and heavy parts.
Are the size measurements inside or outside dimensions?
The product listings state that sizes are the inside usable dimensions of the bag, listed width first, then length to the zipper. Allow extra room for the thickness of the part.
Can 6 mil zipper bags be reused?
Yes. The listing notes the single-track zipper runs the full width of the bag and the bags can be reopened and reused, which suits parts that are inspected or counted before use.
Does a regular poly bag prevent rust?
No. A standard bag keeps out dust, dirt and handling moisture, but it does not contain a corrosion inhibitor. For bare steel in storage or long transit, use VCI bags, VCI paper or VCI film.
How much VCI paper do I need?
The VCI paper listings recommend one square foot of paper for every cubic foot of packaging space, and a complete wrap of the part for maximum protection.
What is the difference between 6 mil and 8 mil bags?
Both are heavy-duty. 8 mil bags are thicker and stiffer and are listed as ideal for heavy products or parts with sharp edges; 6 mil is a common middle ground for machined parts and fittings.
Do you offer volume pricing on poly bags?
Yes. Send sizes, film thickness and monthly usage and we will quote case or pallet pricing with freight. Some common sizes are in stock at select manufacturers, subject to confirmation.
